You see, FM, again, I'm not arguing that things are not going to hell in a handbasket in Obamaland.  But your take on "causality", without mentioning one goddam intervening variable (let alone the thousand that are in effect) is so bluntly beneath even politics 101 that you make a mockery of the word "analysis."  You are arguing that this very bright black Harvard graduate is, in effect, putting the gun to his own head. You dismiss with images of excrement any attempt to bring reason and understanding to what is happening in that totally mad environment.

I will continue to list the many, many instances of madness, if that's all right with you, while you go on predictably insisting  that he is guilty of them all.  :)

I'm not arguing that at all George. Your blind worship of a speech maker and your own lack of any sort of analysis, even grade school, prevent you from getting past your school girl crush on a political rock star you idolize while blaming everyon and anyone but himself for failing to perform the music on his records live in concert.

I am arguing, quite clearly, Obama is a fraud. A fraud who has done more to undermine American democracy than any other US president. He is a gift to the oligarchs, the corporate rulers, and the Republican thugs. Gerge W. Bush set America on a downward path of a declining empire and Obama has his foot on the nation's back. What Bush did for American prestige, Obama has done for American democracy.

But you swoon and swain, George. Maybe be'll blow you a kiss.

Up thread I saw you were critical of "Stephen Harper" for "demonizing the opposition". So, what is it precisely you are doing here?

Maybe he thinks I'm Stevie-boy.  That or a teabaggin' Sarah Palinite.  Or maybe a knight-errant.  It's not easy to tell.

Oh! Cause it looked to me like he was "demonizing the opposition".

So when educated liberals look up from their copy of The Nation or the Jon Stewart show, they behold a chilling sight: Beefy mobs waving teabags and demanding tax cuts to help pay for new schools and bridges, Sarah Palin emerging from the ashes of the McCain campaign to become the high priestess of the uncurried tribes, with a Mormon named Glenn Beck exhorting millions of fundamentalists to seize the country. They feel that something has gone terribly wrong with America.

Immediately they conclude that it is the American people's fault through their backwardness, incomprehension and misdirected anger, and that maybe it serves them right for not rallying behind the flying progressive standard.

I'm sure there's a subtlety here that an irrational sloth like me is missing, but this sounds as if Bageant is paraphrasing George Victor's posts on the reaction to Obama.

Actually, al-Q, what's strengely missing is comment on Bageant's take of the situation and his political "decision." I mean, he's "on his way" to a "strumpetocracy, government by strumpets."  ???

The Story of Obama I, II, by Wayne Madsen

"All in the Company"

http://www.opinion-maker.org/2010/08/special-report-the-story-of-obama-a...

George Victor

The story of Obama among the semi-literate and unread, with whom he attempts to reason, classist concocted nonsense from from today's NYTimes:

"WASHINGTON - Americans need only stand in line at the grocery checkout counter to glimpse the conspiracy theories percolating about President Obama. "Birthplace Cover-Up," screams the current issue of the racy tabloid Globe. "Obama's Secret Life Exposed!"

The article claims, without proof, that Mr. Obama uses a phony Social Security number as "part of an elaborate scheme to conceal that he is not a natural-born U.S. citizen." Despite evidence to the contrary from Obama aides - they posted his birth certificate, from Hawaii, on the Internet during his presidential campaign - polls show that as many as one quarter of Americans still believe Mr. Obama was born outside the United States.

Now comes fresh evidence of misperceptions about the president taking root in the public mind: a new poll by the Pew Research Center finds a substantial rise in the percentage of Americans who believe, incorrectly, that Mr. Obama is Muslim. The president is Christian, but 18 percent now believe he is Muslim, up from 12 percent when he ran for the presidency and 11 percent after he was inaugurated.

The findings suggest that, nearly two years into Mr. Obama's presidency, the White House is struggling with the perception of "otherness" that Candidate Obama sought so hard to overcome - in part because of an aggressive misinformation campaign by critics and in part, some Democratic allies say, because Mr. Obama is doing a poor job of communicating who he is and what he believes.

The president's recent comments on the controversy over whether to build an Islamic community center and mosque near ground zero in Lower Manhattan have most likely intensified suspicions about him. Yet the Pew survey, completed before Mr. Obama spoke out in favor of the right of Muslims to build the center, shows that misperceptions were building even before then.

"This is an expression of the people who are opposed to Obama having an increasingly negative view of him," said Andrew Kohut, the Pew center's director.

But Mr. Kohut also said the numbers reflected that Mr. Obama had "not made religion a part of his public persona" as much as he did during his presidential campaign - so much so that even his own supporters are confused.

Among Democrats, for example, just 46 percent said Mr. Obama was Christian, down from 55 percent in March 2009, two months after he took office. As to the issue of his birthplace, a CNN poll released this month when the president turned 49 found that 27 percent of Americans doubted he was born in the United States. A New York Times/ CBS News poll in April put the figure at 20 percent."

I'm with you George, and like me, perhaps we need to learn how to communicate better.  I like your angle just can't stand the rhetoric and bullying, blaming of the great unread.  It's not them that allow this shit to happen to us.  They may be misinformed but all the readin' in the world ain't going to help us.  Action will.

George Victor

I agree, RP.  The wealthy of both parties in the United States are essentially at fault, because a more egalitarian society would ensure that the bastards could not get away with it...and there would be far more people reading with understanding.  In fact, the media themselves could not get away with their misinformation in the name of their owners.

My parents didn't have a pot to pee in, but public schooling in Victorian England had left them with the message that the only way out was by being informed.  They got the hell out of a class-ridden society in 1921 and starved through the 30s and raised four boys who were given the means to  find out what made their world tick.  I will always be class conscious. But after many years of knocking on many doors I have come to the conclusion that ignorance is the greatest barrier to the kind of structural change we need to head off disaster.  So I get very frustrated, afraid for my family, and really determined not to be hoodwinked or bullied.

When things get desperate enough out there, environmentally and socially, I just hope that enough people have read about the misfortunes of those in the past who let fascism take control.  Victor Klemperer's diaries are a must read.  But there I go, proletizing again. Sorry, but that's what I believe will save my family.  And that is what I will put forward.

Thanks for the reply George.  Many of my posts may have led you to believe I don't agree with you but I agree with you very much.  Unfortunately. I'm not good at recognizing that when I'm frustrated with you.  All the best my friend, I'm sorry for any vitriol I've slung your way.  Perhaps, you can understand.

As an aside, people won't read.  You need to put more out there than books.  We need the facts.  I'm anti-academia by the way.  They do far more harm than good in my opinion.

George Victor

The majority of academics have the same effect on me, RP.   Ever since reading Robert Lynd's Knowledge for What? and coming to the realization that Homo Sapiens is screwing it all up for its descendants, that question is my template for thought and action.

Anticipating a stinging critique of that petition, one must say, what the heck, not to worry, Obamba would not attempt to approve that anyway.

No, the piece from Washington Post writers is only a poor attempt by an essentially Republican organ to appear neutral.

George Victor

I'd be pretty embarrased to associate with this opinion sheet DW...particularly its attached petition ...which opposes a very progressive attempt to halt attacks on the union movement:

Constituent's Petition to:
My Representative & U.S. Senators
I am writing to encourage you to oppose the draconian policies being pushed by Big Labor. These union bosses are seeking to subject workers to intimidation and strip them of their rights, all in an effort to increase their own power and influence.

It is vital that you oppose all legislation that strips workers of their rights, or expands the oppressive power of Big Labor.

Whereas: The overwhelming majority of Americans believe it is just plain wrong to force workers to pay union dues; and

Whereas: The Card Check Forced Unionism Bill would do away with the secret ballot election and allow the union bosses to intimidate one-on-one a majority of workers into signing so-called "union authorization cards"; and

Whereas: The Police and Firefighter Monopoly Bargaining Bill would force all police officers and firefighters under union boss control and is just the first step towards forcing all public employees under Big Labor's thumb; and

Whereas: Legislation repealing Section 14(b) of the Taft-Hartley Act would automatically wipe out all state Right to Work laws, forcing hundreds of thousands of American workers to join and pay dues to a union just to get or keep a job;

Therefore: In the interests of freedom, a healthy economy, and a productive job market, I urge you to oppose any effort to advance Big Labor's forced-unionism agenda.

No, you're wrong. We (yes, the plural) on the left had no expectations from Obama, whom we have always seen as a liberal capitalist who serves the needs of the corporate elites. Someone else is disappointed in Obama.

Yes, some would have preferred McCain/Palin leading the completely alienated and a revived financial industry with a return to the de-regulation of bush...a masochistic streak perhaps.   Wink

But then you see manufacturers sponsoring petitions to halt attempts by labour to bring the legislation forward through a Democratic Congress. On the other hand, what does Labour know, still attaching itself to the Democratic mainstream.  Silly Billies.

Well, some on the left had no expectations, although I can't say we're all that much happier because of it.  And for those of the left who find themselves disappointed, they really need to make a more concerted effort to wean themselves off the pablum and begin the process of thinking for themselves.  For the incurable optimists, you know, the ones who are stocking up on crow to pass around the minute BHO is permitted to implement his programme, bless them one and all.

It certainly is an oddity though, [which may partially explain the facile and shameless attempt hereabouts to lump habitual leftist cynics in with extreme right 'lynch mobs' on the subject of Obama] to behold the one commonality between left and right opinion, which is to say that neither had any expectations, although for entirely different reasons of course.

Census Survey Asks Too Much, G.O.P. Says

By SAM ROBERTS

"The Republican National Committee is demanding that the Census Bureau stop being so nosy, or at least stop requiring that Americans comply.

The Republican Party isn't taking on the census itself, the count of the United States population made every 10 years, but the more comprehensive American Community Survey.

Conducted annually by the bureau, the survey replaced the long version of the census form. It is sent to millions of American homes to collect information on income, education, mortgage debt, marital status, race, religion and more. Burton Reist, a bureau official, said Thursday that it is the nation's "official statistical portrait," used by governments to allocate resources, by businesses to make labor force and investment decisions, and in the distribution of federal money.

Privacy concerns about the 2010 census never grew into a boycott. (In fact, about the same proportion of people returned their forms as in past years.) But the Republican National Committee resolved this month that the Census Bureau behaves "exactly as a scam artist would, asking very personal questions," and called the survey "a dangerous invasion of privacy," and "overreaching and intimidating." The committee said the Census Bureau was "spending millions of tax dollars to violate the rights and invade the personal privacy of United States citizens."

The resolution invokes the Fourth Amendment protection against unreasonable searches and notes that the Constitution mandates a count only every 10 years - to reapportion seats in the House of Representatives. The party is demanding that the bureau either scrap the American Community Survey or make participation voluntary.

The resolution endorses legislation introduced by Representative Ted Poe, a Texas Republican, to require the bureau to stick to the basics: name, contact information, date and the number of people living at an address. A spokesman for Mr. Poe said on Thursday that the bill had attracted 34 co-sponsors.

The committee's resolution says that the census's long form was eliminated because of "objections by the American people to this intrusive questioning." In fact, it was replaced with the American Community Survey to simplify the census and collect data in a more timely manner.

The bureau says the questions are required by Congress to manage or evaluate government programs. Income information, for example, is used by, among others, Social Security, the National School Lunch Program and the Low Income Energy Assistance Program, and by the Department of Education to allocate grants.

To the resolution's complaint that the survey asks "even if the respondent has given birth to any children in the past year," the bureau explains that the question is "a measure of fertility that is used to project the future size of the population, a basic planning tool for agencies of the government," and to research child welfare and the need for voluntary family planning services."

Oy Vey, Obama

By CHARLES M. BLOW

"Is President Obama good for the Jews? For more and more Jewish-Americans, the answer is no.

In a Pew Research Center report issued on Thursday and entitled "Growing Number of Americans Say Obama Is a Muslim" (tragic in its own right), there was another bit of bad news for Obama: the number of Jews who identify as Republican or as independents who lean Republican has increased by more than half since the year he was elected. At 33 percent it now stands at the highest level since the data have been kept. In 2008, the ratio of Democratic Jews to Republican Jews was far more than three to one. Now it's less than two to one.

This is no doubt a reaction, at least in part, to the Obama administration having taken a hard rhetorical stance with Israel, while taking "special time and care on our relationship with the Muslim world," as Robert Gibbs, the White House press secretary, put it in June. If that sounds like courtship, it is.

(It should be noted that the Pew poll was taken before Obama's bold support for the right of Muslims to build a community center and mosque a few blocks north of ground zero.)

Some of the president's most ardent critics and some of Israel's staunchest American defenders - two groups that are by no means mutually exclusive - have seized on what they see as the administration's unfair and unbalanced treatment of Israel and have taken their denunciations to the extremes.

In September 2009, Obama went before the United Nations and declared, "America does not accept the legitimacy of continued Israeli settlements." It was a line that the president had used a few months earlier in a speech in Cairo, but this time it threw critics into a tizzy. John Bolton, an ambassador to the United Nations during George W. Bush's administration, responded: "This is the most radical anti-Israel speech I can recall any president making."

In March, while Vice President Joe Biden was visiting, Israel announced it would move ahead with plans to build housing in East Jerusalem. The administration was not amused. Biden condemned the decision as undermining "the trust that we need right now" in order to have profitable negotiations.

In other words, "You announce this now? You can't be serious!"

In April, after President Obama urged Israel to sign the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty, Representative Eric Cantor, the House minority whip and the lone Jewish Republican in the chamber, lashed out: "The administration's troubling policy of manufacturing fights with Israel to ingratiate itself with some in the Arab world is no way to advance the cause of Mideast peace."

And, the Gaza flotilla incident in May that left nine people dead and drew international condemnation of Israeli tactics only added to the tensions."

America's Biggest Jobs Program - the U.S. Military

By Robert Reich

August 17, 2010 "Information Clearing House" --- -- America's biggest - and only major - jobs program is the U.S. military.

Over 1,400,000 Americans are now on active duty; another 833,000 are in the reserves, many full time. Another 1,600,000 Americans work in companies that supply the military with everything from weapons to utensils. (I'm not even including all the foreign contractors employing non-US citizens.)

If we didn't have this giant military jobs program, the U.S. unemployment rate would be over 11.5 percent today instead of 9.5 percent.

And without our military jobs program personal incomes would be dropping faster. The Commerce Department reported Monday the only major metro areas where both net earnings and personal incomes rose last year were San Antonio, Texas, Virginia Beach, Virginia, and Washington, D.C. - because all three have high concentrations of military and federal jobs.

This isn't an argument for more military spending. Just the opposite. Having a giant undercover military jobs program is an insane way to keep Americans employed. It creates jobs we don't need but we keep anyway because there's no honest alternative. We don't have an overt jobs program based on what's really needed.

For example, when Defense Secretary Robert Gates announced Monday his plan to cut spending on military contractors by more than a quarter over three years, congressional leaders balked. Military contractors are major sources of jobs back in members' states and districts. California's Howard P. "Buck" McKeon, the top Republican on the House Armed Services Committee, demanded that the move "not weaken the nation's defense." That's congress-speak for "over my dead body."

Gates simultaneously announced closing the Joint Force Command in Norfolk, Virginia, that employs 6,324 people and relies on 3,300 private contractors. This prompted Virginia Democratic Senator Jim Webb, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, to warn that the closure "would be a step backward." Translated: "No chance in hell."

Gates can't even end useless weapons programs. That's because they're covert jobs programs that employ thousands.

Quote:

Responding to political pressure to cut distressed homeowners a break, the big banks who destroyed global capitalism in 2008—including Chase—agreed to the Obama Administration’s request to create a program to assist distressed homeowners. The result was “Make Home Affordable.” (Nice name.)

From Chase’s website: “No matter what your individual situation is, you may have options. Whether your want to stay in your home or sell it, we may be able to help.”

Key word: “May.” Translation: “May” = “Won’t.”

Ted Rall

George Victor

The piece by Ted Rall, former banker, now victim of the paperwork of Chase Home Finance, is a model testament to what is happening as a result of that scheming president's politically mindless manipulations against the homeowner in affiliation with finance capital.

The story reminded me of my application on behalf of my foreign-born wife for her old age pensiion last summer.  I was saved from a backup wait of ONE YEAR only by the discovery of an old passport of her mom's in which an immigration official had scribbled the date and place of their original entry into Canada  in Newfoundland, two years after it had entered Confederation. You can imagine what is happening in the terror-filled ranks of refugees facing a government that uses the old ploy of understaffing an immigration bureaucracy.

Frustrated Mess Frustrated Mess's picture

I read another report yesterday that says 50% of applicants who had signed up for Obama's mortgage relief plan have left it citing the very same rigamorole as mentioned by Rall. It was only ever intended as a PR exercise.

On a lighter note, Obama's family swim in the Gulf of Mexico has paid dividends. BP and the Obama administration say the oil is gone. Just like that! It is safe to swim and fish and so safe, in fact, there will no testing of fish or shrimp for harmful chemicals such as benzene and those in the dispersants. But, better yet, the denialists are now claiming the "recovery" of the Gulf proves that oil spills and other human activities pose little risk to a "resilient" Earth and, ergo, neither does climate change.

George Victor

As Maureen Dowd observes today in a column titled "Going Mad in Herds" in which she asks how can people not know the president is not a Muslim...and then begins to answer her question:

"Many people still have a confused view of Muslims, and the president seems unable to help navigate the country through its Islamophobia.

It is a prejudice stoked by Rush Limbaugh, who mocks "Imam Obama" as "America's first Muslim president," and by the evangelist Franklin Graham, who bizarrely told CNN's John King: "I think the president's problem is that he was born a Muslim. His father was a Muslim. The seed of Islam is passed through the father, like the seed of Judaism is passed through the mother."

Graham added: "The teaching of Islam is to hate the Jew, to hate the Christian, to kill them. Their goal is world domination."

A poll last week by the Pew Research Center tracked a strange spike in the number of Americans who believe, despite all evidence to the contrary, that Obama is a Muslim. And even the ones who don't think he's a Muslim don't necessarily believe he's a Christian.

The percentage of Americans who now believe that our Christian president is a Muslim has risen to 18 percent. It was 12 percent when Obama ran for president and 11 percent after his inauguration.

Just as some Americans once feared that John Fitzgerald Kennedy (who was a Catholic) would build a tunnel to Rome, now some fear that Barack Hussein Obama (whose name sounds scary) will build a tunnel to Mecca.

In "Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds," a history of such national follies as England's South Sea Bubble and Holland's Tulip Frenzy, the Scottish historian Charles Mackay observed: "Men, it has been well said, think in herds; it will be seen that they go mad in herds, while they only recover their senses slowly, one by one."

He also concluded that people are more prone to believe the "Wondrously False" than the "Wondrously True."

"Of all the offspring of time, Error is the most ancient, and is so old and familiar an acquaintance, that Truth, when discovered, comes upon most of us like an intruder, and meets the intruder's welcome," Mackay wrote, adding that "a misdirected zeal in matters of religion" befogs the truth most grievously.

You can have an opinion on the New York mosque, for or against. But there aren't two sides to the question of whether Obama is a Muslim.

As Daniel Patrick Moynihan said, "Everyone is entitled to his own opinion, but not his own facts."

George Victor

Nationally syndicated conservative columnist Deroy Murdock took an even stronger line. "Sarah Palin's tweets resemble something scribbled by a ninth-grade cheerleader. Is it asking too much for a reputed American political leader to communicate in complete sentences? Palin's gravitas gap is growing into the Gravitas Canyon," said the media fellow at the Hoover Institution on War, Revolution and Peace at Stanford University.
