Quebec bashing?

Quebec politicians and organizers of the Quebec Winter Carnival are up in arms about an explosive cover story in the latest issue of Maclean's magazine that declares the province the most corrupt in Canada.

The Oct. 4 edition of the magazine also depicts the iconic figure Bonhomme Carnaval carrying a suitcase overflowing with cash.

Two accompanying articles inside explore the question of why so many political scandals seem to happen in Quebec, from the current controversy involving judicial appointments to the patronage days of former premier Maurice Duplessis.

Maclean's is a despicable rag.

Perhaps this might be a naive statement, but I'm heartened by a place that can still be politically scandalized and broadcast. As opposed to the smooth, jowly assurances of corporate politicians and their lickspittles elsewhere, with a small army of skeletons moldering away under the rug.

If I had more energy and time, I'd photoshop Bonhomme to look like Brian Mulroney.

Perhaps there are more reports of political scandal and corruption in Quebec, because Quebeckers expect and receive a higher standard of investigative reporting, and because they are more excercised politically than the ROC.  Maybe the real scandal is how the ROC is consistently kept in the dark about its own dirty laundry. Also some forget that it was The Globe and Mail, and it's Quebec reporter (Daniel Le Blanc) that broke the story of the Liberal "Sponsorship Scandal" (no Quebec bashing there, eh?).  Maybe the ROC needs it's media to investigate its own dirty laundry. While I agree that the Maclean's story is not an investigative report, but a historical rant that heckles Quebec's political class, (so what!?), the obvious question, to this unwashed soul, is: who's runner-up, and why?

Aalya hits the nail on the head. Maclean's is vile. They engage in Quebec bashing, Muslim bashing, Anarchist bashing, poor bashing, and so-on

I look forward to the day when the PC dynasty in Alberta finally collapses (as opposed to mutating into the WRA) and a generation of one party/one industry rule is scrutinized under the harsh light of day... deep down I suspect that corruption in Quebec will look like the amateur hour in comparison to what is found here.

Haha, I love Quebec, but I totally disagree with this statement.  Sadly, despite Quebec's political culture, I find the French-language press I've read at least from Montreal and Gatineau to be disappointingly tame, very provincial and as compromised by their ownership as any other paper in Canada.

I'm uncomfortable with the use of the bonhomme because it has become a cultural symbol.  Depicting the bonhomme like this makes a broad statement about culture rather than about the corrupt individuals.
