Not more, just different. I appreciate that many others/many other queers find it funny, but for me it was too obvious. My take. Doesn't negate anyone else's opinion of it in the slightest.

I am, by the way, a member of the queer community. Queers have different views on things, including, but not only, humour. Just like anyone else.

As a Joel Dick supporter and friend, i did find his performance at the Fly Debate to be fine. I mean, i could tell he was just trying to maximize the limited time he had to speak with 10 other candidates lined up. so, i'm guessing as a practicing litigator in courts, he's frequently called on to be succinct and clear. does it comes off to some as 'messaging'? potentially, though i certainly support the messaging and know it comes from his well-rounded understanding of the issues.

plus i really felt he had the strongest  performance at the televised debate...

as far as the i like dick logo, i think it's a irreverent  way for his campaign to reach out to the neighbourhood. he's already really integrated into the fabric of the church st corridor with his friends and community of interest activities, so i guess this was a marketing move to share the fact that he himself + his campaign are not just queer 'friendly' (always feel friendly means more like tolerate, in these political campaigns) but celebrate the queer community (and diversity within that community)

one last thing about joel-in my time volunteering for candidates and interacting with various political leaders of all stripes, i find joel's sincerity and thirst to learn more about any issue to be incredibly refreshing. i wish him the best of luck in the campaign.

I wonder if any unions are lifting a finger for his campaign?

Putting aside the extreme, cynical tone of this comment, a number of local unions reported at Labour Council last night on their efforts to help Pantalone including (but not limited to) Steelworkers, OPSEU, CUPE and teachers as well as the efforts by Labour Council itself.

He just doesn't know. Stockholm doesn't associate much with the left, so why would he be in the loop? In that light, his question is reasonable. He probably has more of the inside track on what is going on in the Smitherman camp.

I didn't mention the "other" camp. Thanks for reminding me.

Given who this week's cover star is, I think I have a pretty good idea who Xtra might endorse for Ward 27.

JeffWells

Ward 32 - what's going on?

Gladstone's dropped out and is supporting Mary Margaret McMahon, whom both the Sun and the Star seem to be beating the drum for, which is enough to make me suspicious. She came to my door, and I told her I was supporting Bussin, and all she wanted to talk about was the Boardwalk Cafe deal. Sorry, I don't care, and I'm just not that parochial in my vision for the city. I wish I'd had the time to think of asking her for her vision, because I've seen nothing of substance in her material.

Stockholm

I was wondering what the low down was on Mary Margaret MacMahon (3M for short?). The Star has endorsed her editorial and so has their resident "leftist" Heather Mallick but she is also getting backing from Warren Kinsella and from the Toronto Sun. So I wondered what she was all about. I figured that if Mallick backed her maybe she was essentially another "progressive" but minus all the controversy surrounding Bussin, but then I figured that if the Sun and Kinsella back her - she must be very rightwing. Her website is no help at all - it contains ZERO policy stances of any kind. Just attacks on Bussin about Tuggs Restaurant. If I lived in the Beaches and I had qualms about Bussin, I would not have the slightest idea what I would be getting with 3M - is the a Rob Ford supporter and that's why the Sun likes her? Is she to the left of Sandra Bussin and that's why Heather Mallick likes her? No body knows, its a MYSTERY!

aka Mycroft

The Sun may just "like" her because she's not Sandra Bussin and seems to have the best chance of unseating her.

Stockholm

We seem to be doing a lot of guessing...I remember in 2003 some people living near Yonge and Eglinton were pissed off with Anne Johnston because of some local issue. This mystery woman named Karen Stintz ran against her her with a very vague platform full of platitudes and a lot of people voted for her just to "get some new blood". She won and turned out to be a total rightwing crackpot - though you never could have figured that out from looking at her website or campaign literature.

I find it very irritating that so many candidates have these very hidden agendas and they get elected with no platform at all and then PRESTO!

aka Mycroft

I'm not saying she doesn't have a hidden agenda (and the fact that crackpot Martin Gladstone did a deal with her makes me suspicious), I'm just saying the Sun often supports the candidate they think has the best chance of unseating someone they hate be that person a Liberal or even an NDPer in some cases.

Hmm....

5. Who do you plan to support for mayor?
Declaring support for a mayoralty candidate is not part of my campaign platform. Who can create the needed change in Ward 32 and at City Hall? I CAN!

For a self-portrayed heroic community organizer, her top priorities seem oddly aligned with Ford's:

1. What key issues define your campaign platform?

Top 5 ways I can create change:

Budget Responsibility: Greater responsibility with local contracts, development, tendering processes, budget plans, council salaries and expenses.

Local Businesses: Win-win solutions to support local businesses; less bureaucracy, more business-community integration and less political pressure.

Guess you are just going to have to follow her around to campaign events, quote that, then say: "Rob Ford? Nope: Mary Margaret MacMahon"

Given some of the commentary above, I just want to take a moment to thank the union folks who've put themselves wholeheartedly into Joe's campaign. It's inspiring to see. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Of course, few others know as deeply what's at stake in this election.

Together we are stronger. There are more of us than there are of them.

Don't know whether it reflects anything of her politics, but 3M's campaign signs in Ward 32 look like Reform Party throwbacks, with their blue/green livery...

Perhaps its reflective of a Green/tory position protecting the environment for the privilegded.
