Is the left too sensitive, ideologically puritanical and morally prudish create a tent big enough for change?

To put it another way, is the left anti-humanity and anti-social for dealing with common people from diverse backgrounds?

I posted another thread and I think the left (at least at rabble) seems like it has a puritanical bent which is unhealthy, regular average everyday people use common language, they don't speak PC academic feminism.

I called people "pussies" (cowards) in another thread because I was disappointed by peoples reactions to the bailout, is the left so fractuous that it can't create a big tent because of this desire for ideological and moral purity, i.e. it doesn't have the skin to acknowledge how people really are in the real world, not in some isolated academic island?

It seems to me this constant obsession with political correctness is why the left is too weak to create a big tent and get things done and why you see reactionary swing to the right.  This "holier then thou" attitude cannot be healthy if one is to build grassroots movements for changing society which means compromising and accepting people from all kinds of backgrounds that you would consider "inferior" to what many of you were taught and raised on.

There is an excellent piece by ghandi on why westerners don't get it... since educated westerners on the left tend to have contempt for the common people and their behaviour/language "pussies = opression", and have this distorted puratinistic politically correct worldview (at least at rabble) that can't be healthy if one is going to use it to club people that have never read about, or question the legitimacy of this sites political correctness.

How can a big tent movement be built when people are so sensitive and instantly shun or excommunicate those who differ in their perspectives and worldviews on what is "acceptable" without a wide range of acceptance the left will be increasingly marginalized by petty division because of it's lack of skin and "can't we all just get along according to ideology x" moral, linguistic and behavioural idealism that denies how people are in the real world.

Catchfire Catchfire's picture

How can a big tent movement be built when people refuse to stop using language which excludes, offends, insults, belittles and marginalizes those most vulnerable to the malice of capitalism and its crusaders?

Sorry, this conversation isn't happening on babble. We've had it. Respect the mandate of the board and its members. Why do you have so much invested in the ablity to call people "pussies"? Just use "cowards" and move on. We have.
