Write to Attny-General demand wiretapping charges against Fantino, McCormack, Carter

[email protected]

Dear Attorney General Chris Bentley,

In a democracy, lawbreaking by the very police who are sworn to uphold the law is a danger that must always be taken extremely seriously.

Recently, serious allegations have come to light that in the 1990's, members of the Toronto Police carried out illegal wiretapping on then-Police Board Chair Susan Eng.

This has been reported by two credible news sources:

Eye Weekly http://www.eyeweekly.com/city/features/article/106503

CBC  http://www.cbc.ca/canada/story/2010/11/19/toronto-police-recordings-eng....

Attorney General Bentley, I urge you to lay charges against retired police officers Garry Carter, Julian Fantino and William McCormack, as well as any other officers who may have been involved in this regrettable incident.

Failure to prosecute this crime sends the unfortunate message to police all over Ontario that they, too, can break the law with impunity.

Furthermore, it would be especially deplorable if any other police officer in Ontario learned the wrong lesson from this incident, namely that it might be a good idea to mimic this misbehaviour by wiretapping their own civilian overseers.

Attorney General Bentley, as much as I regret sending you a message of this kind, in the words of Edmund Burke,

‘The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.’

Sincerely,
