Canadian Forces goes Lady Macbeth on Col. Williams

Quote:
Once they have his medals and scroll - an official document that confirms Williams was a serving officer - the military plans to destroy them, he said.

Williams had two medals: the Canadian Forces Decoration Medal, given for good service, and the South West Asia Service Medal, for having served at least 30 days in Afghanistan.

The scroll will likely be shredded and the medals cut in pieces using a special device to ensure they're not re-used, Genest added.

The military has also taken the extraordinary step of burning Williams's uniform and clothing at CFB Trenton, the base he once commanded.

Two senior Canadian Forces officers, accompanied by military police, entered the eastern Ontario cottage where Williams raped and murdered one of his victims to retrieve his military clothes and other gear on Nov. 17.

The clothes were incinerated the next day in a facility that's normally used to destroy classified materials.

Uniforms and other equipment belong to the military and are usually retrieved when someone leaves the Canadian Forces. But Genest said it was the first time he's ever known a uniform to be burned in his 25 years with the military.

From the Canadian State-sponsored media outlet.

I just think that this is kinda weird. I mean are they trying to pretend that when you put a bunch of mostly men into a highly stratified, intensely patriarchal structure and teach them how to kill on command that just one or two might be Col. Williams?

By burning and destroying the uniforms and accoutrements etc., of Williams, one has to wonder if the military is trying to re-establish its now tarnished image by purging themslves (both metaphorically and literally) of his "evil spirit", so to speak.

The military has enough rituals that they shouldn't need to invent new, weird ones on the spot.  Ya, he's disgraced.  He's kicked out.  We all get that.  No need to fire the guy's underwear into the heart of the sun, or throw his birth certificate into the fires of Mount Doom.

It reminds me of those old school european/british practices of not only executing someone but then doing all sorts of weird shit to their body after they are dead.

Well, for sure his body should be buried under a very large rock, lest it reanimate. and probably having an ultra-secret sect of martial-arts practicing monks swear an oath to guard the tomb for generation after generation would be due diligence as well.

I just find it interesting that his medals, which may have no magical powers whatsoever, have to be cut to pieces using a special machine.  Besides just seeming like overkill, if they get cut into, say, seven pieces and those pieces scattered across the earth, well, any sci-fi fan can tell you how that will end.

Shades of the ritualistic humiliation of Dreyfuss before they shipped him off to Devil's Island.

They have a "special device" for cutting medals so that they'll never be used again...

I object to the defamation of Lady Macbeth in this thread. She sure gets a lot of stick for her role in the regicide, and she didn't even do it. So she planted some evidence. At least she shows some remorse by the end of the play--Macbeth is a damned soldier who goes around splitting enemies from nave to chaps; and he has masculinity issues.

If anything, the CF have gone Thane of Cawdor on Colonel Williams.

Jingles

It's actually a good idea to keep this stuff from ending up on ebay.

But seriously, a "special machine" fot the medals? Putting them on the train tracks isn't exotic enough?

Other than the fact that Dreyfuss did nothing to deserve it, of course.

Yeah, but at least Dreyfuss was innocent.

I thought that Macbeth defeated the Thane in battle and then took his title after the King executed him for treason?

Caissa

Geez, one compares behaviours and others have to compare people. Of course, Dreyfuss was innocent.
