Canada has wisdom to keep?

Okay, John Ralston Saul is all we got and i'm not sure he still lives here.  So, then how about suggestions on where I should go to find wisdom keepers?

Caissa

Define "wisdom keeper".

I think that's the sort of thing that's best decided by a reality show.

"Canada's Next Wisdom Keeper -- Last episode, Doug was voted off Turtle Island for opening a 50 with his teeth -- NOT wise! -- leaving only Gord, Helen and Arvinder to eat all that Poutine in tonight's immunity challenge! But is eating 3 pounds of fries with gravy and cheese curd wise??"

Sigh! Okay, but i thought i was a pretty good topic question.

isn't babble just a grassroots reality discussion show?

*In deep narrator voice* a typical post-modern disdain for anything resembling an attempt at  sincerity seems to be growing amongst many of the competitors.

Doesn't have to be a person. Organization, community, corporation etc. are all acceptable.  Where have you found evidence of wisdom? where are you currently searching for it?

Thanks for the suggestion Absentia.  I looked him up on wikipedia.

There's something profound in this, I'm just not sure what it is.

We used to have more but the ones familiar to me are mostly dead. Certainly, Pierre Berton was the most important.

I thought maybe younger people here would have contemporary candidates. I assume wisdom-keeping is not just writing stories or chronicling events, but describing, explaining, illistrating the spirit of a time and place and people, so that it will not be forgotten.

Imo, wise people are the ones who are quiet, who stay away from the spotlight, live their lives simply and honestly and are not actually trying to teach you anything. That said, I think public figures can also be wise, and my examples would be Pierre Trudeau, maybe Margaret Atwood, Ursula Franklin (who's also smart), and no doubt a dozen or two more who I haven't thought about or don't even know about.

He may be Canadian originally, but seems more concerned with US politics. (Did he say "..president Cheney..." ?)

I think the wisdom keepers are those who chronicle the events and lessons of their own tribe (or  nation) in particular, rather than humanity in general, (why i didn't consider Atwood) or one aspect of public life (why i didn't nominate Peter Newman).

David Suzuki qualifies, i think.
