Whatever happened to "alien abductions"?

Quote:
If "Abductology" is the study of alleged UFO abductions, then it can be said that not since the sudden demise of Marxist-Leninism has any subject, real or imagined, self-destructed so suddenly and so completely as Abductology has managed just now to do.

Let's ignore the obvious error in the above quote about the "sudden demise" or self-destruction of Marxism-Leninism.

How come nobody gets abducted by aliens any more?

I guess the obvious answer is that it wasn't aliens doing the abducting after all; it was Marxist-Leninists!

I think abduction claims are ongoing just like rapes and other assaults. Farmers cows continue to be reported dying under mysterious circumstances. There is a recent movie Fourth Kind and supposedly based on actual events of 2000. Travis Walton wrote about his abduction experience in The Walton Experience and subsequent movie, Fire in the Sky. The most famous case is Betty and Barney Hill of New Jersey. That one caught the attention of Carl Sagan as well as his former university classmate Stanton Friedman. Former Harvard trained psychiatrist John Mack said that a large percentage of abductees believe they are telling the truth.

Have to laugh at the instructions for commentators below the article:

Keep your comments relevant, and keep them civil! That means no personal attacks will be allowed, by anyone, on anyone.

I think it just means that you're in good company with the very open minded author and his flock of experts on the matter. Wink Because here is Bob the expert making a similarly authoritative claim. And we have to give bonus points for his clever use of "Troika." That should be enough scare everyone away from the neoliberal baloney and abductee phenomenon in a single literary blow, or something:

Bob the Expert and rabid Anticommunist wrote:
No doubt UFO abduction claims will trickle on for a while, but it's clear that Abductology, as practiced by the Troika in its heyday, is now considered even by many pro-UFOlogists to be an embarrassing chapter in the history of UFOs that should be forgotten as quickly as possible.

ETA: Oh? It looks like Bob the armchair debunkerer and flag waving patriot might also be a climate science denialist. Yeah whatever, Bob.

CONCLUSION:

I think it's obvious at this juncture that Bob is probably an abductee in denial himself. He writes pseudoscientific essays and references those of others as his way of dealing with his PTSD. He's likely the target of ongoing abductions by lizard people from another planet who thrive in slightly warmer climes. We're on to you, Bob! Smile

Bob Sheaffer's slip-shod journalism criticized by Canadian physicist

And, If blue book was canned due to lack of U.S. Government concern for national security regarding UFOs and reports of UFOs, then why are USAF pilots and other military officers still abiding by "special instructions" for reporting them in 2011? Why are so many CIA documents regarding UFOs whited-out to the tune of over 90 percent for the average declassified Gov document on UFOs?

U.S. Government lies seem to change noticably from decade to decade concerning the subject of UFOS. What is it about UFO reports that they don't want you to know and have lied about constantly in order to cover it up?

How did I miss this thread the first time around?

Kids in the Hall: Anal Probing Aliens

I always thought that the aliens took one look at John Baird, thought 'There's no intelligent life on this planet', and then left!!!!

I think one (arg, I hate going from a black background to a white background my eyes!)  commentor made a good point.  That alien autopsy video was probably a "jump the shark" moment.

I think another aspect of it was the growth of a more humane treatment of people claiming to be abductees, not tossing them aside as liars or crazies.  Mack was right about one thing, and Sagan agreed-- many of these people believed what they were saying.  It doesn't mean they were abducted by aliens, but that some other phenomena were responsible.

This is a great thread! Does this mean that Marxist-Leninists should seek a strategic political alliance with aliens? Our interests are the same! What we wish for, you wish it too!

Sagan was interested in the Betty and Barney Hill story because of the star map Betty recollected seeing during a hypnotherapy session. The psychiatrist, Dr. Benjamin Simon said that the Hill's emotional response to re-living portions of their alleged abduction experience were every bit as emotional as those of soldiers recalling shell shock experiences - post traumatic stress disorder - which is considered a serious area of study in psychiatry today. Psychiatrists are clever, and I think it would be a difficult thing to fake.

Harvard and other well trained psychiatrists didn't consider the Hill's crazy or liars. And so why should we? Sometimes psychiatrists will allow their patients benefit of doubt and especially when there is an absence of signs of mental illness. I would think the Hill's were at least as sane as someone like George W. Bush and probably moreso. And we know this is true because making jest of George dubya's sanity is entirely off limits on babble.

Is it true that only white legos report abductions by aliens?

From the 1970s, by the look of that moustache.
