Alan - read much.

I didn't say you were a conspiracy theory nutcase.  I said claiming this small, little change that clarifies the rules for holding a person they believe to have stolen property from them (which of course would require some evidence - not just a 'feeling) is akin to creating a police state is, to quote, "the world of conspiracy theory nutcases" In other words such a theory is- not you as an individual.

I also did not claim you lied. I clearly said that if it was true then the shop owner was dead stupid. Given the laws they would have to be. You seem to like to make a mountain out of mole hill though so please feel free to carry on at your leisure and lecture the rest of us what being a true progressive really means.

I also find the hate expressed by a number of people for small business owners really anti-progressive and disturbing - but maybe that's just me.

Michael Moriarity

It is my opinion that no society which includes the institution of personally owned property will ever solve the problems of poverty and theft. My ideal world would abandon that divisive and invidious concept forever. I also agree with all the commenters who have argued that root causes of poverty and the crime it produces should be the main concern of NDP policy. But, on the other hand people, as Sean says, this really is small potatoes.

A local merchant in Ms. Chow's riding was charged with a criminal offense for apprehending a man who had stolen from his shop only an hour or two before. In the context of the society we actually live in, this was an outrageous act by the Crown prosecutors. Possibly 2% of the Canadian population thinks it wasn't, and they are all apparently commenting on babble.

Get a grip, folks. Chow's bill is a minor amendment to a rarely used section of the criminal code. It is not the apocalypse. If she hadn't supported this extremely popular cause, she quite possibly may have been denied the opportunity to have a role in the much more important economic, political, and social reforms which we all hope the NDP will be able to bring about.

To make myself clear,I have NO qualms with merchants protecting their businesses from thieves....If you catch someone shoplifting, for example,I thought it was common knowledge that apprehending the offender until the police arrive was common practice to virtually all businesses.

So if the legislation already exists, why must we rework it?

I just have a hard time believing that the Reformers would not exploit this expanded legislation to continue to abuse our civil liberties.

I realize I may be fixated on the phrase 'arrest without warrant' but it seems to have something insidious about it.

Am I worried or against an NDP bill for merchants to protect themselves?...No

Am I worried that the wording of this bill will be perverted by The Reform Party to further eliminate civil liberties?...Yes.

I don't want to come across as a conspiracist but if there's something I have learned in the last 5 years is Harper is capable of anything..And none of it is good for us common working folk or anyone else not an employer,a cop or a corporation.
