Does Steve have the CRTC Preparing the Way for Fox North?

post to come

George Victor

Just read in the letters column of the local Record that the CRTC is considering changing the rule stating that broadcasters "shall not broadcast any false or misleading news."

Under changes being considered, broadcasters would only have to follow a regulation preventing them from broadcasting anything that "endangers" the public. False or misleading would be okay.  As the letter writer observes: "It is curious this rule change is before the commission just as SunTV News is about to start new programming that many believe will be similar to a Fox Newso-style format."

Have I missed discussiion on this somewhere on rabble/babble?  My apologies if I have.

George Victor

The CRTC has received more than 3,000 public responses to its plan to "change a regulation that prohibits the dissemination of false of misleading news." Most of them opposed the proposal. They are to be found posted on the CRTC website.

"If implemented, this change will throw wide the doors to the lies and manipulatiion of Fox News-style televisiion; if implimented, this change will usher in an era in which venemous, fact-eschewing news media will shape the destiny of Canada," writes one, quoted in the Feb. 11 Globe.

The joint committee of parliament that demanded relaxation of regulations a decade back because they appeared to violate the Charter, probably won't back down now, says Liberal MP Derek Lee. "I think we will simply proceed with the files as they are, put on the record our response, and acknowledge the desire of the public to do everything we can to assure truth in broadcasting..."

New Democrats have told Parliament that the regulationary change after a decade's hiatus is not mere coincidence.

Hi, should I introduced myself first ?   anyhoo, I have a problem with the title here unless I have missed something.  According to what I have read it is nothing to do with Stevie or the proposed SunTV.   It is a change requested by a bi partisan committee of which Liberal MP Derek Lee is a co chair, which has been asking the CRTC to do this for 11 years.   They are acting on a previous S.C. decision so until we find otherwise I do not think we can blame this on the Tories.   Anyone know who else is on this committee.   Smile

George Victor

Hi.  The question has been "why now" (as Sun TV providentially appears) . Perish the thought that that meeting between Steve and the principals of Sun TV last year would result in arousal of the CRTC on this matter. Innocent

Did he have a meeting with Quebecor or Rupert Murdoch ?

Also wondering why the Liberals on that committee would go along with it.

George Victor

Take your pick.  As for Liberals...they aren't really.

Subject: 48 hours to save Canadian journalism - massive response!

Wow -- 70,000 signers in 48 hours! The petition was delivered to the CRTC last night, and they're watching our numbers now - sign below, forward this email and make this an unstoppable public outcry!

    Dear friends across Canada,

Public protections against false and misleading news coverage could be destroyed by the CRTC -- paving the way for "Fox News North" to spread false information to the Canadian public that supports their political agenda. We have just two days to raise a national outcry and urge the CRTC to protect Canadian journalism!

    Sign the petition!

In 48 hours, public protections against false news coverage could be destroyed. The CRTC may pass a huge loophole to the "fair and balanced" rule that currently prevents media from outright lying to the public.

Canada's broadcast journalism standards are an impediment to the new "Fox News North" (Sun TV) network being set up by Prime Minister Harper's cronies, which promises to mimic Fox News -- the poisonous US propaganda network. The CRTC rule change, which allows false news to be blasted across Canadian airwaves, comes just as SunTV is about to launch.

We can stop this -- last year, we prevented Harper cronies from pressing the CRTC to fund "Fox News North" with public money. Now, we have just two days to raise another national outcry to save the standards of Canadian journalism, and our democracy. Sign the petition below, and tell everyone:

    http://www.avaaz.org/en/canada_fair_and_balanced/?vl

The proposed changes to regulations protecting Canadian airwaves would require any complaint to include proof that the broadcaster knew that the news was false AND that the lies spread could endanger the lives, health or safety of the public -- so a journalist could tell any lie they liked as long it didn't kill or sicken anyone. Proponents within the CRTC are claiming that this change is in reaction to a Supreme Court decision, but that ruling was made fifteen years ago and has almost nothing to do with TV news standards.

Television news is regulated by the CRTC precisely because news that spreads lies degrades public discourse and destroys the ability of Canadians to cast an informed vote. These kinds of lies may not directly threaten our lives or personal security, but they do threaten our country and our democracy.

Avaaz, along with hundreds of other media advocates, has already submitted a detailed legal argument explaining why the "fair and balanced" rule is necessary to protect Canadian democracy. A national call to keep the news honest will focus CRTC attention on the legitimate objections to their dangerous plan. Sign the petition and forward this email to everyone:

    http://www.avaaz.org/en/canada_fair_and_balanced/?vl

Just a few months ago, Canadians prevented government subsidies for "Fox News North" and helped expose the unethical conduct of its director Kory Teneycke, Prime Minister Harper's former Communications Director. Now Harper's cronies are back, and hacking at an essential pillar of our democracy, the standards that help prevent media from outright lying to the public. In the next two days we join a long tradition of Canadians who have built and sustained our democracy in the face of all kinds of threats. Let's do that tradition proud.

    With hope,

Emma, Ricken, Laryn and the rest of the Avaaz team

Ezra Levant tells it like it isn't on Fox North beginning Monday

    clandestiny

why bother? The noosemedia is already rightwing/far rightwing/ultra rightwing/nazipooh/nazi cum fascasti/CONSERVATIVE! Even CBC (during a piece on the Wisconsin labour union troubles with reactionarky gov. attacks, the Sunday Edition featured THREE rightwing loudmouths to explain why poverty is A) good for working folk; and UNIONS are anti poverty groups, so ...blah blah blah.....) even the CBC finesses the rightwing message, and promotes extreme rightwing pov...

(btw, foxnews' talkingheads were saying that 7 outta 10 largest contributers to politcal parties were corporate activistes while only 3 gave to the Dems, and changing rules will thus eliminate even those 3....the foxnews stooges both agree that ...well, that would not be good for the country!)

The rightwing itself has to put on the brakes before true fascism gains control...or else

    George Victor

    You haven't heard Ezra Levant's rant yet!Laughing

    Searosia

So we've got the Fox North News Network coming online in 3 minutes and counting.

I'm liking the responses I'm seeing...even the Conservatives I know aren't liking the prospect of Fox North coming to Canada.  Hopefully this bombs.

    Searosia

It's started off with the canadian anthem to a cheesy slideshow....and then a flashy show of all the new news reporters they'll be displaying.  I kinda like that Ezra is on there...text form can hide what a ugly lil asshole the guy really is, on screen he's much more recognizable as the rat he is.

    Snert Snert's picture

Is this station in any way officially affiliated with Fox?

    Searosia

Officially...no I don't think so.  Unofficially, I think yes...at very least they're relying on the model and style fox uses.  And the people they have hosting definately have fox affiliate contacts.

Kinda fun, my entire office is sitting around taking jabs at Fox News North right now.  We'll have a FNN drinking game released soon I think

    Snert Snert's picture

Hehe.  If they mention "family values", take a drink.  If they mention the Human Rights Commission, chug.

    Searosia

First piece appears to be Ezra Levant going off on the validity of the CBC vote compass.  Geez does his pointy lil head bounce around as he talks, and them hands won't stop.

My work is almost exclusively aged 25-35 and 50/50 male/female...almost 100% NDP/green non-voters no less and pretty hostile towards conservatives (who knows, maybe there's a couple closetted Conservatives just trying to fit in here?).  The drinking game follows that...any montage that has a white picket fence image is a drink...Candian flag with female voice in the background is a drink (any image of mounties...etc..)...when a white female reporter in a power suit stands up and walks over to the next segment where a white male awaits her infront of a gigantic tv screen, chug!

lol - just got a "not wearing a lapel pin = drink" suggestion come up

Perhaps it's less Fox News North and more MSNBCSUN?

    I quite enjoyed it actually.

I watched a bit of Adlernation.

Some of the companies that supported Charles are: Oliveri, Tempurpedic, Avon, East Side Mario's, Sandals and the Baby Bullet.  (who's the marketing genius who came up with that name?)

Charles Adler eh?  I've heard him on radio; what exactly does blowhard pomposity look like, anyway?

Does Corus Media own the new TV station?

    Tommy_Paine

As far as I know, this is a Quebecor effort.   As for what Adler looks like: Angry. White. Old.

Hi George, I understand it fine, thanks. The linked article just reinforces what I was saying, lots of warnings about something that hasn't come on the air yet and references to non-specific "hate media". You could just leave it up to individuals to decide what they want to watch without worrying about it too much. The "theme" yesterday seemed to be the huge wasteage of taxpayers' money - something that all Canadians should be interested in surely.

Does he still have a beard? And that weird accent (harrumph harrumph)?

    Tommy_Paine

Yeah, he's got a beard, and I think he got off at least one harrumph.

I'm off work today, and doing some spring cleaning mostly in the living room, so I've had the T.V. on tuned to Sun.  Interesting.

They don't seem to be set up to do much actual news.   No video on breaking news-- what little there has been.  Just lots of intereviews, lots of opinion, attention to the visceral.

And on the "Caldwell Report" a condemnation of police action during the G 20 this past summer.

I've been paying more attention to the advertising.   This Sun T.V. is going to bleed Quebecor dry.

I love it.  Because I don't have Quebecor shares.   If I did, I'd be on the phone screaming at my broker right now to sell.

    George Victor

Tim Johston: . "The "theme" yesterday seemed to be the huge wasteage of taxpayers' money - something that all Canadians should be interested in surely."

Don't know whether you caught it, but that's a Conservative theme out there on the hustings as well.

Day 3: Watch for a rant on coalitions. Smile

    George Victor

Hope yer right, TP.  Business people love 'em.

    Tommy_Paine

Well, George you have to take a step back and take a look at what's been happening.  This media convergence by Bell, Shaw, Rogers, Quebecor is a result of them constantly going to lenders saying that an aquisiton of this or that will give them "synergies" which will provide profits down the road.  And now, they are making aquisitions as much to keep up with each other than any other reason.

And when these "synergies" haven't panned out, they've gone back to lenders or shareholders with the idea that another aquisition will create further "synergies" and profits down the road.

Now, lenders are in the position of having to play along because they are in too deep to pull the plug.

There's a HUGE bubble about to burst in the media/communications sector, George and we have a ring side seat.

    Enjoy.

    Tommy_Paine

"Don't know whether you caught it, but that's a Conservative theme out there on the hustings as well.

Day 3: Watch for a rant on coalitions."

Well, that was already brought up today.

I'm not as upset or concerned about Sun T.V. dove tailing it's message with the Conservatives.  Only because the rest of the media plays this game too.

I mean, Evan Soloman's head is so far up the Public Relations industry ass that we can wink at him every time Jamie Watt opens his mouth to speak.

SNN’s first programming day began seconds later at 5 p.m. ET, with the debut of Ezra Levant’s daily program, The Source. Here’s what happens on Levant’s show: He stands behind a lectern for 45 minutes and talks. Then he moves to a chair and talks. Then he gets back up. The production values are such that you spend most of the show wondering when Ezra’s Mom is going to call him up from the basement for dinner.

Levant devoted much of his first hour to wondering how long it would take for “the censors” to come and try to shut him down. His best guess was that it wouldn’t take too long, because he’s all controversial and opinionated and stuff. Nope, shouldn’t take that long at all. [Whistles idly, glances at door.] He seemed kind of let down that no one came to forcibly silence him. As a viewer, I can assure you I felt the same way.
