Witness accuses Montréal police over freeway shooting incident

This is very far from how the media (i.e. police) reported this incident yesterday...

This all happened yesterday, and Décarie (Montréal's main north-south freeway) was blocked off for much of the morning. The story sounded very fishy from the start. Today, an incredible revelation:

According to police, the driver charged at several other cruisers before officers opened fire and wounded him several times, bringing an abrupt end to the chase.

But a city worker who was on duty in the neighbourhood tells a different story, claiming he witnessed the last few moments before the shots were fired.

“I saw the whole thing,” he said. “I was 30 feet away. I could have gotten it all on my cellphone (camera) … but I was just so shocked.”

The witness said the man had slowed down considerably before police shot him.

“One of the police cars hit him, and I saw him pretty much give up,” he said. “He slowed down and let go of the gas and didn’t do anything. Then I saw a cop pull out his gun and open fire through the passenger side window. … There was no warning.”

The witness said the driver, who appeared to be in his 40s, was clearly injured and came to a complete stop in the intersection of Paré St. and Décarie. He was then dragged out of the car and pinned to the ground by several officers, the witness said.

“He was saying, ‘It hurts … I’m hurting … I beg you.’ Pretty much saying everything a man could say to beg,” he said. “I was pretty disturbed by what I saw.” The witness spoke to The Gazette on condition that his name not be used out of fear of repercussions.

The witness hung around for 40 minutes, then was told by police to leave without giving a statement.

The victim is still in hospital, expected to recover from his gunshot wounds.
