Vandana Shiva was scheduled to speak tonight in Calgary, Alberta, spiritual home of far right Canadian prime minister, Stephen Harper. But, like other activists and writers trying to enter Canada lately, things didn't go smoothly for her.
Shiva is also scheduled to receive tomorrow a University of Calgary's Consortium for Peace Studies award.
Swerve Calgary reports Shiva is being held tonight at the Canada/U.S. border due to "an issue with her visa."

I'd be pretty choked if I was going to see her. I wonder if she'll get to pick up her award.
Not sure what it means, but I did hear that even a University of South Dakota chamber choir doing a tour of church dates, also had border troubles this week coming into Winnipeg.

Vandana Shiva is a superb speaker. And she goes straight to the heart of the problems with GM products. "Spraying of roundup is ecocide of the planet". No wonder the powers that be here do not want her.

The guards are just obeying orders. It is much more important to stop the guys who give the orders.

I'm gonna guess that your customs and immgration department will pretty much make sure any foreign enviros are kept out of Canada until after Harper gets his way on the tar sands.
Perhaps they can set up a Banned Speaker series at the Peace Arch.
