I've been known to scribe a poem or three, so I'm putting my name in. If you want to read some of your great unpublished poetry this is the place!

Call out for Poets

4th Annual Mayworks Poetry Marathon Fundraiser!

Are you a poet? Would you like to be? We want to invite you to read your poetry for 3 to 5 minutes at the Fourth Annual Mayworks Poetry Marathon - a fundraiser for the Mayworks Festival of Working People and the Arts. This year our event will take place on May 1st.

Come celebrate May Day with Mayworks!"

The Poety Marathon is a 5 hour event from 2pm to 7pm on Sunday, May 1st, 2011 at The Garrison at Dundas and Ossington in Toronto's west end. As always we will feature well-known and published poets, as well as unknown and first-time-reading-in-public poets.

Let us know! Let your poet friends know!

Contact Erica Kopyto at [email protected] by Friday, April 1st with
a very short (20 word) bio to ensure your spot in our line up.

More details will be coming soon!

And don't forget to check out our website for information on this year's amazing line-up at the 26th annual Mayworks Festival of Working People and The Arts, coming up in May 2011.

WHO WE ARE

Mayworks Festival of Working People and the Arts is an arts festival that celebrates working class culture. Founded in 1986 by Labour Council, Mayworks is Canada's largest and oldest labour arts festival. The festival programs artists and events that have a social justice focus and are relevant to all working people. We work in partnership with unions, organizations and artists to develop, promote and present events that fit our mandate.

OUR MANDATE

All workers share a common struggle for decent wages, healthy working conditions and a living culture. Mayworks is committed to showing artists of diverse backgrounds and artistic forms, and to highlighting labour issues little talked about.

EQUITY POLICY

Mayworks Festival acknowledges that we live in a society rooted in oppression and inequalities; that structural injustice and unconscious prejudice influence our experiences; and the importance of incorporating the knowledge and guidance from oppressed people's experience within the organization.

The following "designated groups" are identified as being disadvantaged in employment and in society:

* Women
* Indigenous People
* People with Disabilities
* People of Colour
* Queer-identified people (namely lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, transsexual, and inter-sexed)

Mayworks also acknowledges that low-income earners, those living below the poverty line, and other economically marginalized people are also disadvantaged in employment and society.
