I missed the announcement where you and Rebecca were put in charge of rabble. Congratulations.

Logging in is simply proof of your identity.

And the CAPTCHA proof of your humanity. ;)

That said, I agree with the logic of the CAPTCHA, after receiving some arbitrary number of correctly completed strings, regarding your login as undeniably human and ceasing to nag you with more CAPTCHAS. But as someone who works around software applications, and often has the unenviable job of telling end users that something that would make perfectly good sense simply isn't a feature in this build, well, c'est la vie. If the CAPTCHA really does learn, and fairly quickly, then it may work out more or less the same. I think that I've only had to enter maybe 3 CAPTCHAS thus far, which is not so bad. Viagra!

edited to add:  See!  It already trusts me to say Viagra!

Are you still using IE6? C'mon! That browser is for ghosts of IE past and British government workers not real lefties!

Where is that perfect lefty web site, or that one which will never happen? Smile

It's obvious to me the spam filter hasn't learned a damned thing over the weekend.

Have you been sassing the CAPTCHA?  Because I can say the v-word, no problem.  Why is the CAPTCHA giving you stick over it?

Catchfire Catchfire's picture

But Boom Boom, you're posting! Is it just that you find the CAPTCHA annoying? I agree that it is, but it should go down over the next week--in fact, we already got some statistics which suggest the number of CAPTCHAs is dropping significantly. Apparently you're just one of the unlucky ones!

Again, I can only request that babblers remain patient with this filter over the next week or so. By then we will have a better idea of what is going on.

Boom Boom Boom Boom's picture

Yes, I can post, and yes, CAPTCHA is annoying. Especially when it's blocking every post I make in some threads, but not in others.

ETA: son of a gun - no CAPTCHA this time!

Papal Bull

I think that rabble's techs should, I dunno, communicate these things before they inevitably fuck up the implementation? I remember when I was at smaller boards with entirely volunteer moderator staffs the board admins were kind enough to their volunteer mods to not stick them with this crap.

I don't think Catchfire and rebecca should take flak for this, I think rabble should have a sacrificial IT patsy to be sent out and deal with these problems and communicate with us, rather than waste everyone's time. This isn't a problem of our mods, it is a problem with the website gods who really do not seem to be able to make sense of how to make a community happy. Siiiilllllyyyyyyy.

If by "in charge of rabble" you mean helping babblers navigate their way through the temporary and annoying anti-spam software glitches, while having to deal with the same issues, then yes, you missed the announcement.

So you think the jobs of the rabble techs should include interracting with babblers to get everyone's opinions?

Sure, maybe the along with the IT patsy Rabble should provide each babbler with a pony too.  Wouldn't that be nice?

The things people expect from a free service.

I agree entirely.

Papal Bull

"So you think the jobs of the rabble techs should include interracting with babblers to get everyone's opinions?"

Communicationlol. I simply said that prior to these changes we should be informed of the changes, it isn't hard.

Watch: 'We will be implementing a spam filter. These are the features. We apologize in advance for any inconvenience and will work with the community to resolve any difficulties"

Was that so hard?

"Sure, maybe the along with the IT patsy Rabble should provide each babbler with a pony too. Wouldn't that be nice?"

It would. Many of the people here deserve and would make good use of a stalwart beast of burden.

Except for you. You will be given gloves with bullet ants sewn into them

Fidel

An' I want a pony, too!

NDPP

I am still having to go through the CAPTCHA twice with each posting. Once to preview and once to post. Clearly the 'recognition' feature isn't functioning. The only time I didn't get the CAPTCHA, at the posting stage, was after keying in a wrong CAPTCHA at the preview stage...quite clearly this is an IT matter nothing to do with the MODs.

Unionist

I was going to wade in to support Catchfire and Rebecca, but it appears to me that no one is attacking them (other than venting frustration in their direction, because who else is there??). It is unfortunate - unacceptable - that they have been left holding the bag in facing everyone's legitimate frustration. Likewise for the bag they were holding before, which was wasting their (and therefore our) precious time swimming in pools of toxic spam which they had to deal with.

I fully support the effort to stop this spam by whatever means necessary, and I'm prepared to wait it out. I think, ultimately, everyone is - but we are a nation (or at least a discussion boards) of people who need and like to vent. Everyone's cause here is just. Let's be patient.

The babblers - united - will never be defeated!

Fidel

I still want a pony and step on it! WA! WA!

Was that so hard?

So, let's say the IT person started a thread to say that.  And then they left and never posted again.  Would they get praised for make the post to inform?  Or would they get slagged for only posting once, and "not really engaging"?  Would they be expected to follow thorugh the thread?

Do you think the limited IT time that rabble has access to should be spent working on the site, or engaging babblers?

Boom Boom Boom Boom's picture

As I said somewhere earlier, I support anti-spam efforts to free up the Mods for other things - so I'm with Unionist on this.

Fidel

Me three! And that's not to say I am insensitive to the concerns of others. I am. And perhaps they could use a pony as a gesture of good will in these dark times. Wouldn't hurt?

Sineed

The spam filter made me fill out a captcha thing a couple of days ago.  But in all fairness, I have actually sold Viagra and Cialis.

Edited to add: this post asked me for a captcha.

Fidel

Post trauma distress by captcha? PTDC? I sometimes take hot cocoa. And,

I think we all deserve a pony each with bells and spearmint scented leather chaps as a gesture of good will from rabble.

I'm not sure what I'd do with a pony, although I'm told horse manure is good garden fertilizer.   I couldn't afford vet bills - even if we had a vet - which we don't.

Boom Boom, you are SO jonesing for a garden ... patience.  It's almost time to plant.

You know me too well! Embarassed

We're still two months from planting here - the ground is pretty much frozen until the end of May, and not warm enough for anything to grow until mid-June. Such is life in the north.

ETA: I did not get CAPTCHA'd this time! Innocent

CAPTCHA is not annoying. It is fucking annoying. Give us a techie and our righteous wrath shall be abated.

It's early going, but so far today I have not been CAPTCHA'd. So, thanks! Smile

ETA: Sadly, a few hours after I posted this, all of my posts are being CAPTCHA'd. Frown

Malcolm Malcolm's picture

I can live with the occasionall CAPTCHA.  What I hate is that, if I include a hyperlink, the filter tells me it IS spam and doesn't even give me the option of a CAPTCHA.

RevolutionPlease RevolutionPlease's picture

I'm getting CAPTCHA'd all over but it isn't really slowing me down.  So RP spam can't be CAPTCHA'd.

damn.

We may have to launch a resue mission, Boom boom. You seem to have been CAPTCHAed.

Sorry for the drift.

Captured by robots.

if it makes anyone feel better, all my posts longer than 50 characters are capcha'd and anything with a link is as well.

That was 67 characters by my count, Boom Boom (including all word spaces and smilies) - if you weren't CAPTCHA'ed, Maysie now has a valid case for discrimination.

Maysie Maysie's picture

Unionist, I've had a valid case for quite some time now.

Nope, wasn't CAPTCHA'd in that post. I may  have someone looking out for me.  Innocent

Catchfire Catchfire's picture

Maysie, the personal attacks stop now. Consider this a warning. Next time, it will be a suspension.

Caissa

Did you forget the smiley, Catchfire?

Catchfire Catchfire's picture

Smilies are for suckers. I'm a straight talker. I shoot from the hip. I shoot straight from the hip and the shots I shoot are straight because I am also a straight shooter. I shoot as straight as I talk. My sentences are hip which coincidentally is also where I keep my gun whence I shoot and also whence I speak. I amastraightspeaker.

ETA. Maysie is banned.

Maysie Maysie's picture

Catchfire is a bot. Pass it on.

Caissa

Okay, I know this is a cliche but could you two get a room. Surprised
