Jack & Olivia on CPAC Live

NorthReport

It may be crunch week for the NDP but Jack is sure not backing away from talking to the media - he and Olivia are presently holding an extensive presser right now which I presume is in Toronto.

NorthReport

Excellent letter!!!

Why won't media back Jack?

One of the problems is that no major Canadian newspaper will recommend the NDP. No, every election the newspapers come out and solemnly state that after deep consideration they have decided that we should vote either Conservative or Liberal. Thus we must always choose between the party that gave us the customs scandal and subsequent constitutional crisis of 1926 and, more recently, the sponsorship scandal (the Liberals), or the party that gave us the Pacific scandal of 1873 and more recently has lied to Parliament and has been held in contempt of Parliament (the Conservatives). Yes, it is always six of one and a half dozen of the other.

We all know that if the New Democrats are elected the realities of the situation will force them to moderate some of their options. But what is wrong with their propositions for credit-card interest rates, families or Arctic sovereignty? Absolutely nothing!

Nevertheless, our political pundits wonder why the youth of this country are not voting or why the general participation rate is dropping. The answer is crystal clear, and I will state it in the antiquated Morse code: we are all tired of voting for the old parties and we are sick and tired of all their " ... .... .. -." This is from someone who now must mull over whether I should make a strategic vote for the Liberals to stop the Bloc Québécois or vote NDP.

Didn't Iggy the Liar promise he would not attack the NDP? The Herald is saying their is new attack ad from the Liberals aimed at the NDP.

Captain Janeway

I am very upset that Ignatieff with his bumbling campain and his preaching of his right to be the PM if harper gets a minority, has esentially gauranteed that Harper will get a minority. What was this idiot thinking?

Tommy_Paine

That Capstick guy on the CBC said early on that the NDP had innoculated themselves against "strategic voting".  I didn't believe that to be the case.  While I thought progress had been made, I expected to be fighting the same fight as usuall against the politics of lies and fear that are the basis of "strategic voting".

But it seems I was wrong, and Capstick right.

I'm not sure how you rebuild a party that keeps losing when the ideological base was soley based on winning.

Canadians see that NDP understands country: Jack Layton

The NDP leader plans on building on the momentum his party has gained and any new attacks from opposition parties are simply compliments, he said Saturday.

NDP leader Jack Layton plans on building on the momentum his party has gained and any new attacks from opposition parties are simply compliments, he said Saturday.

During a radio interview with CBC's The House Saturday morning, Layton said Canadians, and voters in Quebec especially, are moving to the NDP party because the party understands what the country needs and the New Democrats, he said, promise to deliver.

"I've always said, since I've become leader, that we really should create the winning conditions for Canada in Quebec because that way, we'll be building a stronger country," Layton said."That's my goal as somebody born and raised there."

He said residents in Quebec wanted to be listened to and to have their concerns addressed"It's just a question of respect ... unfortunately, people in Quebec haven't seen that from the Harper government," he said.Layton, who has been questioned about his health, small crowds at the start of the campaign and a platform that included many old policies, has been on a roll following the two leaders debates.http://www.montrealgazette.com/news/decision-canada/understands+Canada+J...

This morning M. Duceppe sent out a message on Twitter that this election is not between right and left, but between Canada and Quebec. He has sent a bunch of further messages trying to refine the phrase.

Paul Wells picked it up and said that this is a desperate call to the hard-core Bloc supporters only, or "sauver les meubles".

I watched the Liberal ad on YouTube, and have to say that it's one of the lamest attack ads ever made.  Three points: 1) Layton didn't whip the NDP vote on the gun registry, 2) NDP has $75 billion in campaign promises, and 3) many NDP candidates are inexperienced.  I can't see it really having any impact.

The biggest thing that gets me is they don't even have the guts to put paid for by the Liberal party in big red letters. It is on the screen in the bottom corner for like second.

Here is Barton's picture-- people are reporting they don't have enough room to all get in.

Quite the rally.

Jack is taking on Harper - he is going for the prime minister's job.

NorthReport

Impressive - I think Jack will now be holding a presser

Ok. I'll admit. I've never seen an NDP rally like this. Not in 08. Not this time...until today. #elxn41

Layton on being in Duceppe riding: we just needed a big place. Yeah right. Sowwy. Don't buy it. #elxn41

samuelolivier

Just back from the Montreal rally and let me tell you: it was an amazing packed crowd. I've never seen something like that for a federal election. The crowd went mad when Jack entered the room. I heard some volunteers from the campaign in Montreal South shore saying that their candidate in St-Lambert is ahead of the Bloc 31,8% vs 30,2% and they are ahead in Brossard too. This is a pretty good sign.

Layton has a chance for the brass ring

[quote]Layton hails 'winds of change' in Quebec

Under attack from rivals, NDP leader says he's 'ready to be' PM

NDP Leader Jack Layton hailed the "winds of change" sweeping across Quebec, as polls suggest his party's support is climbing in the province.

"My friends something's going on in Quebec. There's the winds of change that you can feel along the St. Lawrence River," Layton told an enthusiastic crowd of about 1,200 people at a rally in Laurier-Sainte-Marie, currently held by Bloc Québecois Leader Gilles Duceppe.

Speaking in front of a backdrop of a giant orange fleur-de-lis, Layton pledged to bring a "breath of fresh air" to Canadian politics and that change is necessary "because things are broken in Ottawa."

Layton added that he is ready to lead the country.

"I am ready to be your prime minister and I fully understand what this means," he said.

According to the Olympia's website, it can only seat 1200, so if the media says 1200 were present we're talking about a sell-out crowd with possibly people turned away.

Do you worry this election will decide nothing? Well, lets see, how do we attack the NDP without naming them. I know, let get people to talk about the need for a majority government, of course it can only be Libs or Tories, and imply people have to ignore the NDP.

I hate the CBC!

CTV is reporting that close to 1300 attended the NDP rally

welder welder's picture

It would be interesting to see if this helps the NDP candidate in that riding knock off Duceppe himself!!!

What would it mean for the Bloc,as a party,to have it's leader taken out???

I,for one, would shed no tears for a secessionist wipe out in Quebec at the hands of a federalist party...

Soulforger

Having Quebec come back into the Federal scene would be welcome. The BQ has made so many great points in the past that get washed over because of the separatist ideology of the party.

This means some great ideas get ignored. With the NDP some of those ideas will now be heard which will grant Quebec a greater voice than they had with the BQ.

Well it is official the Liberals are desperate and willing to accept a Harper majority if it means beating back the NDP.  If you didn't know it was a Liberal ad you would likely conclude it was suppose to drive to the Conservatives with their bs right wing economic attack.   By the way, it is the Liberal campaign's numbers that don't add up.  Take a look there is a huge gapping hole in it because they will not roll back corporte tax rate far enough.

Tell me again why one single progressive person should vote for the Liberals?

Not to mention all the promises Iggy has made which have never been included. He promised a new Bridge in Montreal, a New Stadium in Quebec City/Regina/ and Halifax, a New 10 million dollar a year ferry in Yartmouth. Iggy has been desperate in being desperate has promised many many billions of dollars not even in their platform. What a stuipd liar.

edmundoconnor

I don't buy Layton's excuse about the venue, either. He wants to take down Duceppe himself. Even if Duceppe escapes that humiliation, he's forced to scurry back to his home riding and play defence. If the numbers hold, there will be some harsh questioning of Duceppe's leadership by the BQ, in any case. For a leader's riding to even be in play suggests a seismic shift, uninspired leadership, or both.

NorthReport

It might have been Mulcair who suggested the venue for the rally.

The Liberal ads are just full of half-truths and plainly desperate. This needs to be repeatedly a million times by each surrogate of the NDP before they immediately return to the subject of his positive campaign, his optimistic vision for the country, and the historic significance of his momentum in Quebec. The Liberals just want to drag the NDP into the mud with them and Layton shouldn't let them.

Come to think of it, Jack would be the first facial-hair (in office) PM since Louis St-Laurent.

We should create a thread to keep track of all the bs attacks on the NDP and debunk those that deserve debunking.

Layton headed to Edmonton on Wednesday

He will be in Conservative Saint John on Monday and I hear he will be rallying again in the GTA. I read that the offensive will also lead him to the North. Where else will the offensive lead?

Anonymouse

600 energetic supporters cheered the NDP in Brampton on Thursday. The NDP got 11% in the 905 West (e.g. Brampton, Miss) in 2008 (h/t punditsguide.ca). Times are a-changin'.

Anonymouse

Duceppe screaming for independence and the Liberals and Conservatives attacking the NDP is exactly the evidence people need that it is time for change, that things are broken, and that the NDP represents a real difference.

Doug

The more Duceppe talks up sovereignty the more Quebec will run screaming.

Election Trivia!

If 83-year old NDP candidate Alvin Mackling was elected in the riding of Provencher, Manitoba (against Vic Toews?  probably not....but...!), would he be the oldest ever MP elected to the House of Commons?  Yes or no?

The answer.....?

No!  John Diefenbaker was 84 when he was elected for the last time in the 1979 election, although he died before the House sat again.

I just voted today and it almost didn't happen. One of the ladies didn't know what the rules are and another lady had to come over and fit it. I got alittle pissed when I thought I would be denied my vote, but things got worked out. I just had to be a part of this orange revolution even if this not an NDP hotspot.

ghoris

Wow - I had no idea that Al Mackling was still around. He was Attorney-General in Schreyer's first term, lost his seat in 73 over Unicity, then came back in 81 and was in Pawley's Cabinet.

He has no chance of defeating Vic, but I'd love to see those debates!

I've worked as a DRO. Whenever there is confusion in a circumstance like this, the poll supervisor would clear it up if necessary. They very much aim to ensure every voter gets their vote, from my experience. Especially in an AP where there is so much time to sort out a problem. Worst case scenario I've seen is ten minutes before polls close and some poor soul has to run home for proper ID, and not make it back on time :(

Actually it the supervisor who screwed up and another worker had to correcter. Still bygones, I was mad at the time, but I am in such a good mood that all is forgiven. I know it was not intential, and it worked out in the end. No hard feelings.

Anyway this election is getting exciting. The NDP has this great engery and the attacks are a massive fail. Just heard on the radio Iggy attacking Harper's tax cuts. Yet he attacks Jack Layton for doing the same thing. He is talking out both sides of his mouth and he simply not smooth enough to pull it off. He must be doing more damage to his own party then good.

Between corruption questions, hostility to the media, terrorist links, the HST, ad attacks on Jack that are both dishonest and hypocritical, and the momentum of Jack Layton Harper ia blowing his chance at Majority and most likely Minority government.

Gilles trying use the Quebec vs Canada is a disasterous tactic for him because he spent his career telling everyoneseperatism did not mean the Canada and Quebec were enemies. All that work went out the window in one cearless tweet.

Jack Layton is possibly getting more coverage now then in his entire career as NDP leader and he takes in stride. Iggy will be pillored for decaades by liberals for missing his chance to be pm and instead handing it over to Jack. When he goes into voluntary exile back at Harvard he will write a book on it. It will be the only book of his I plan to read.

TorStar does a driveby smear of Layton and Olivia. Disgusted re the coop living thing. The libs I've noticed like to throw that around. Anyway, I think that when Iggy's Layton attack had no traction they are trying to put Jack off his game by doing this crap.

Sounds cheap like the Sun - TorStar sure is slumming!

From time to time he has been criticized for saying one thing and doing another, including being caught red-handed in 1985 living in subsidized housing in Toronto when his and Olivia Chow, then a Toronto trustee, were raking in a combined $120,000 year.

That Brennan writer always slams Jack - I guess he is just doing his same old same old - humping for the libs
