Election talk (17)

I don't mind that he isn't taking questions on what seems like a very busy day. Jack's Q & A with the media yesterday actually seemed to me to be longer than some of his others.  He dealt directly with questions on the Sun smear; he was only a bit evasive on the minority/coalition question.  This question was framed rather dishonestly, though, in an attempt to get him to state that he would or wouldn't attempt to unseat Harper immediately if he was a close second in seats in the House -- but why would he answer that?  He repeated his usual comment about being willing to work with all parties, based on the house for which Canadians voted.

Contrast this with Harper taking only a few questions in front of what basically amounts to a partisan mob, which uses its numbers to either shout down reporters or applaud so loudly that they can't be heard.

"Harper says a vote for the Liberals is a vote for the NDP."

What a wonderful, upside-down world this suddenly became.

Is Abbotsford in play or is this story a prank?

http://www.abbotsfordtoday.ca/?p=58551

faith

I can't believe that this story about Abbotsford is the real deal. The Conservatives have had this Bible belt seat locked up in every election in recent memory. In 2004 Randy White ran and won the riding for the Cons with almost 30,000 votes, outdistancing his nearest competitor (Liberal) by around 20,000 votes. In 2008 Edward Fast won the riding for the Cons with almost 31,000 votes outdistancing the Liberal and NDP by over 20,000 votes.

Even with NDP and Liberal combined they couldn't even come close to the Conservative vote. If there was ever a riding that represented the 'converted' it is the riding of Abbotsford to which Harper will be preaching tonight.

Basement Dweller

For many years, working stiffs from places like East Van and Burnaby have been moving further East out into the Valley for affordable housing. Up until now, they seem to have been absorbed into the political culture there. I've always wondering whether it would reach a point where they might influence the Valley.  I'm not expecting wins out there, but will be watching for surprisingly good results.

"Let's be clear. A vote for the NDP is not a protest vote. A vote for the NDP is a vote for an NDP government."

I agree with Basement Dweller. I think the main reason Harper is going to Abbotsford is to get some regional media exposure and it is one of the few places he can guarantee himself a large and receptive audience.

That being said, with the HST and the growing visible minority population (that might make a break with the Conservatives), the NDP should have better results than usual. The NDP did better here in the BC provincial election when they were campaigning against the carbon tax.

For anyone in need of a boost, check out the CTV translator at the 2:50 mark of this news coverage of Jack Layton's rally in Montréal this morning. She starts cheering the lines of Jack Layton. Lol.

G-d damn Free Press.

"NDP voter volatility could create election surprises"

Quoting Compas, again, "But here's the paradox: the NDP is especially unpredictable and can go both ways," Winn said.

Those guys are desparate! I HATE THEM!

edmundoconnor

Compas is off the road-map. If they said oranges were orange, I would need to check first.

Harper is sounding increasingly desperate today. He is trying to whip his supporters up into a froth, fearing for their jobs and savings as the NDP comes to obliterate the economy. Mais voyons donc!

He has also been savaging Ignatieff, saying that at best he will be a backseat passenger in an NDP government. I think this line will backfire on Harper. Most Liberals are not happy with the hatchet job Harper did on Ignatieff, so Harper attacking Ignatieff like that, this late in campaign in a Liberal riding, will I think bring the Liberals out to vote. Also, given how Harper polarised the electorate, I think there are very few potential supporters for him in any party other than the ascendant NDP right now, and Harper has been able to knock Layton off his momentum. Let's hope voters show Stephen the (orange) door.

Harper is there because it is the next best thing to hiding altogether. There he can get big crowds and few questions from citizens-- they can shout down the media that is following him.

CTV's QP today: Jane Tabor and Joel Denis Bellivance talk about the collapse of the BQ and LPC, while Craig Oliver predicts we will have an NDP minority governmentSmile

howeird beale

I saw the circumfrencially challenged Mike Duffy PEAKING OUT on Scumnews this morning. He was talking about the tory crime bill that died at dissolution, saying that the Libs and Dips deliberately were letting child molestors off the hook. At one point he actually said "with this bill if someone were exposing himself in public then the cops could arrest them today. Now that cant happen." Uhhhh, yeah, cops cant bust flashers, ok.

They're terrified!

Anonymouse

Guy Giorno was shaking like a leaf on CTV's Question Period! He couldn't address the NDP surge, he kept repeating the Conservative campaign line. Sure doesn't give one a lot of confidence in the Conservative ground game.

The NDP press office would have struggled to have said it better. I agree. We can do this!

P.S. I'm hearing some very interesting things out of York South--Weston. Keep an eye on it tomorrow night.

P.P.S. I've just seen a tweet from a Tory in YSW that says they're worried that Alan Tonks has effectively endorsed Mike Sullivan as his successor. Would be news to the Sullivan campaign, but interesting nonetheless.

Reuters has the CONS at 37% and the NDP at 30.6%.

The numbers are still tight 24 hrs from D- day.

I'm thinking that this is good news.

Around Montreal, the lion's share of defaced and/or torn up campaign posters are Conservative candidates.

Interestingly, alot of Bloc posters have fallen victim to vandals as well...Even up St-Denis St.

But I guess it comes as no big surprise.

But in Edmonton?...That is a surprise..A pleasant one.

asterix

Oh, but remember, Edmonton was already the one part of Alberta where it's not outside the realm of possibility for a Liberal or NDP candidate to defeat a Conservative. Think Anne McLellan, or Dave Kilgour, or Ross Harvey, or Linda Duncan (and on top of that, Strathcona is Duncan's riding.) It may not happen particularly often, all things considered, but it can and does happen there much more often than anywhere else in the province.

In Calgary, that would blow my mind. But in Edmonton, not so much.

Actually I've seen a few trashed Hastman signs and heard of some vandalized Duncan signs. Not like 2004 when I discovered some NDP signs that someone had lit a bonfire under.

SOmeone pulled 60 NDP signs, and a bunch of liberal ones out of a dumpster yesterday, according to a report (with photographic evidence) on facebook.

Why is that not news

It's all coming together perfectly. According to Nanos, the smear campaign actually helped jack's leadership rating. Some polls have us withinn 4 points. Craig Oliver predicts NDP Minority. Harper and Iggy are freaking out and so are the banks, oil companies and the Calgary radio shows. Something big is gonna happen!

Some polls have us within 2 points nationally and several within 3. Actually I was reading the business section in the Edmonton Journal yesterday and they didn't seem too worried about the prospect of an NDP government. I think a lot of small business people like us because we are proposing lower taxes for them. The banks and oil companies and Calgary talk shows can go hang.

Part of me hopes that we don't win.  We'll have over two-thirds of the caucus as newbies.  If we do win, we better do it right especially starting with the transition... have someone like Roy Romanow head it.  Let's NOT make some of the mistakes that happened in Ontario 21 years ago.

Reminds me... if anyone is near Bob Rae or Ujjal Dosanjh on election night, please take a picture of them for me... probably the moment the media declares the Liberal Party in third place Tongue out

It is true that we will have many new MPs and that it might be more ideal to have some time as official Opposition to transition to the next election but if we are elected we have to do the best job we can as the future of canada and even the world will be affected. I understand there is some students in Quebec I hope they are hard lefties enough to keep the party to its principles.

To me, the question is not Will the NDP change Canada? but Will Canada change the NDP?

Policywonk

There's something happening here,

what it is ain't exactly clear.

The last night of EKOS must of had us in a statistical tie with the Conservatives. And the Forum poll has us almost in a statistical tie, and within striking distance of the Conservatives in Ontario. The other polls don't quite support this, but there may be some pleasant surprises in Ontario and the Conservatives may not win a majority of seats there. Hell, we might even take more seats east of the Manitoba/Ontario Border. We would have to win most of the seats in Ontario for a plurality, and that doesn't seem likely, but I see the chances of a Conservative majority slipping away, and the most likely result is that they will lose seats.

2 things about the BBC report.

First of all,the NDP promising to tackle the deficit in 4 years 'doesn't add up' according to the opposition.

But the Tories plan to do it does add up?

The NDP CAN keep all their promises AND balance the books in a 4 year span simply by cancelling plans for 'super' prisons, the fighter jets and most,if not all,the corporate goodies.

How do people think the 'Tories' would balance the books while keeping THEIR promises?

A military supremist police state at the expense of the poor, the sick and the elderly...And a major screw job to students and unions for added effect.

Enough with the bullshit fear mongering..Thankfully,it seems it ain't working anyhow.

Secondly,is Canada really entering unchartered political territory?

I'd say that a Harper majority would be unchartered territory.

The difference between the Cons and the NDP is that one party wants to kill Canada and the latter wants to save Canada.

alan smithee alan smithee's picture

There's alot of talk about polls and how the numbers will translate into.

BUT...I am almost completely certain that there may be some concerted effort to make damned sure the NDP's surge does not interfere with the majority the Cons so desperately want.

Yep..I'm talking about voting fraud...And I have a feeling that Canada is going to experience what the Americans did in 2000,where ballots will be destroyed for one reason or another.

No,I'm not a paranoid.

I just don't trust the CONS as far as I can spit...I put NOTHING passed these 'people'

Uncle John

Let's not talk about voter fraud. We now have ID 2 VOTE, so it is going to be way less than it might have before.

Some is going to happen, and it could come from any of the parties.

All of the parties have been victims of it.

Agree with this and think our polling station here will have ALL the votes excluded given what has been "supposedly",  and what is actually, transpiring.
