Obama to Announce the Death of Osama Bin Laden

CNN is reporting that Obama is going to announce the death of Osama bin Laden.

Ken Burch

Following which, Donald Trump will demand to see Bin Laden's death cerfiticate.

Doug

Ha! Probably to no effect. I suppose Obama has just guaranteed himself a re-election.

Good riddance! Burn in hell, Osama. And congratulations, President Obama, on making it far more likely that you'll be re-elected president.

Sineed

New York Times also reports this.

I'm on the live feed from the White House, still waiting.................

Maybe...although I wouldn't be surprised if the Republicans start insisting that Bin Laden died of natural causes and, that, thus, Obama deserves no credit for it.

Dodger718

Well, Obama deserves credit for diverting troops from Iraq which had never attacked them and raising troop levels in Afghanistgan.

Ding dong the witch is dead!!!

...and not just OBL either

CNN is indicating, but not yet confirming, that OBL was killed by a Predator drone...

Ken Burch

The gloating is going to get a bit sickening on my side of the border for the newt few days, or even weeks.  Apologies in advance.

Osama Bin Laden was a scumbag, but most of those who died in Afghanistan had nothing to do with him and did nothing to deserve the sufferings inflicted upon them.  I'm already embarrassed by the tone I'm hearing even on Democratic Underground.

No one's death should be celebrated.

I'll celebrate OBL's death.

ETA: Nothing to gloat about.  Just glad he no longer exists...

Dodger718

I always keep a bottle of champagne in the fridge just in case there's a reason to celebrate. My New Yorker wife and I are having a glass right now.

Interesting timing.

Plus,I think NBC waited until the end of The Apprentice to announce this 'Special Report'

Chalk it up to things that make you go hmmm.

Ken Burch

Here's the opening paragraph to a thread I just started on Democratic Underground(in the face of a lot of "USA! USA!" senitiment)

A vile man is, apparently, dead. I don't mourn him and know of no one else who will either.

But the pursuit of this man(assuming that our forces actually killed him as opposed to his simply succombing, at long last, to kidney failure)led to the deaths or many, many people in Afghanistan AND Iraq...few of whom had any connection to the man, or his crazy militia/cult, and few of whom deserved to suffer for the repulsiveness of his actions.

If Osama is dead, that STILL doesn't vindicate the Iran or Afghan wars OR the idea of U.S. intervention in the Middle East. It still doesn't justify the human cost. And it's not at all likely to turn into the ability to achieve progressive outcomes at home.

What we're actually going to see now, unless I miss my guess, is a rise in "superpatriot" emotions, emotions that are almost always tied to right-wing politics, emotions that OUR party will not benefit from.

In the meantime, Afghanistan needs to be rebuilt and the imperial mindset embraced by the leaders of both parties in this country needs to be challenged and resisted at every turn, because if it isn't, all that we hold dear as progressive-minded people will be swept away in another ugly tide of American exceptionalist arrogance.

Be wary of all that. Show restraint. And mourn the innocent dead.

Sorry if I'm not in a "Yea, Team!" mood tonight...but war isn't a sporting event and death, even of loathesome people, shouldn't be celebrated. Every time we DO celebrate someone's death, we kiss a little of our humanity goodbye.

Now that one notorious terrorist has been killed, how about the other terrorists and war criminals?

The ones in our backyard and our neighbour's backyard.

I'm pretty sure I heard someone on CTV say Harper's supposed to make a statement. They didn't say release a statement so I assume it means he'll be speaking live. And I'm sure speaking instead of releasing a statement has nothing to do with Monday's election.

Wash it down with champagne.

nope

Politicians playing politics? Never!

As symbolic as this I doubt his death matters much in the long run.

He was living in a mansion outside the Pakistani capital... imagine that.

As for him being dead, good riddance to him, not much will change. I'm sure a few terror attacks that were already in the works will be done in his name but other than that it will be business as usual (for the lack of a better phrase). Now that he's dead can we put an end to this stupid war on terror?

Ken Burch

I fully expect Julian Fantino to announce that they caught Bin Laden in a massage parlor.

yep Harper now gets  news coverage all night tonight and day tomorrow, and Mileski is busy assuring us, well actually telling us, there is not  a thing partisan about this...

ya right...thge reality is it is actually day in parts of Canada and Harper is going to get unfair coverage, tonight and all day tomorrow, that the other parties are not, I hope they all launch election violation court actions against g him and the CBC.

The CBC has now reached an all time low....

Incorrect

Expect the military industrial complex to develop a new "threat" to replace the Phantom Menace.

Nope, not according to Milewski and Wendy Messli as they say Harper is doing it as a Canadian and the leader of Canada, not a party leader on the eve of an election.

As I said "ya right" and the CBC has sunk to an all time low  in their anti-democratic actions against Canadians.

ETA: Harper did not have to politic Melewski did it for him, ffs....

This is wonderful news. I am definitely convinced. What a great victory this is for the US Military and CIA, Homeland Security etc. It was really worth it in the end.

There is only one thing though. Osama bin Laden was never officially declared guilty of 9/11. OBL was never wanted by US authorities for orchestrating 9/11. At least, not officially. OBL was wanted for a number of other terrorist attacks, but not for 9/11.

“Deathers” Demand Proof

A group being called “Deathers” has publicly announced that it does not believe Osama Bin Laden is really dead. The group, formed Sunday evening, May 1, 2011, at a cybercafe in Tulsa, Oklahoma, has said it will not accept the reality of Bin Laden’s death until the long form of the death certificate is released by President Barack Obama.

“It’s all he has to do, just show us the long form,” said a spokesman for the group. “If he can’t do that, doesn’t it make you wonder? What’s he hiding?”

Dodger718 wrote:

Um, Afghanistan "had never attacked them" either.

This is exactly what the Obomba administration wants you to think.

There's an election coming up in 2012.

There are still 50,000 U.S. troops in Iraq.

The Obomba administration is trying to twist the arm of the U.S. puppet regime in Iraq to extend SOFA (Status Of Forces Agreement) indefinitely. U.S. forces are supposed to withdraw completely by December 2011.

So the myth that Bush's 2007 surge in Iraq was "successful" is now the myth that Obomba's 2009 surge in Afghanistan is/will be successful. The facts tell a different story: 2011 has so far seen the highest level of violence in the Afghan war. 2011 has seen the spread of high, medium and low levels of insurgency in Afghanistan so that no part of Afghanistan does not have some level of insurgent activity. In fact, 97% has "high" or "medium" levels while the remaining 3% of Afghanistan has "low" levels of insurgent activity reported. The number of U.S. and NATO troops killed this year is so far the highest for this same time over last year's or any year's in Afghanistan.

In December 2009, Obomba announced that a major troop withdrawal from Afghanistan was going to happen in June 2014. State Secretary Hillary Clinton, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen and top U.S. General in Afghanistan David Petraeus have worked very hard since then to distance the Obomba administration from this promise. The best that can be expected is the 'start' of a withdrawal process with a token and inefectual withdrawal of U.S. troops in terms of units (i.e., noncombat units) and numbers.

Let us not forget that 2014 is now the new 2011 - for the time being.

Another message: "Where Bush failed, we (the Obomba administration) succeeded. Bush failed to kill or capture Osama Bin Laden. We got him!"

Result:

A boost for Obomba for 2012.

A boost for the Afghan war, support for which has been nosediving for the past eighteen months.

True on the face of it. But some of us are in contact with our inner-vengeful bastard. Personally I have a bit of a list of people I hope to outlive so I can toast their demise. I know this makes me less than an ideal human being, but I really enjoyed the wine I drank when Ayn Rand shuffled off, and the scotch I drank when Menachem Begin did likewise... and I am sure I will be lifting a beverage in a mocking salute when Margaret Thatcher is put into the ground to be rot. In all likelihood I am not the only one keeping a list. Sorry to break it to you Ken, but most of us have a vengeful bastard lurking inside of us...

"...Canada receives the news of the death of Osama bin Laden with sober satisfaction. We will continue to stand firm with our allies against the threat of global terrorism.."  Stephen Harper

he should have said more correctly that Canada will continue to stand firm with our allies to advance global terrorism..

Ken Burch

I know we do(I have one myself), but I truly think that if we do that other than exceedingly rare circumstances(for me, Hitler and Roy Cohn would have been about the only ones, other than the street party I MIGHT attend when, and if, Thatcher dies), we chip away at our own humanity.

Hate their deeds, hate THEM in life...but be careful where that hate takes you.

The best revenge is to build a world that people like that would hate.

Osama bin Laden tried to kill many of my friends and family. I'll raise a glass to his death.

I don't believe that for a 'New York second.'

Haven't any of you read the convincing evidence published on the net that since 9/11 Osama Bin Laden has been living in the U.S. Virgin Islands?

He is under the FBI Witness Protection Program and is protected 24/7 by CIA agents.

Since off the record, this is so far the 21st Century's worst kept secret - I'll pass this additional bit of 'insider' information on to you:

Bin Laden is most often seen reclining on the beach sipping pina coladas and wearing cheap sunglasses, shorts and tee shirts that read "I Heart N.Y."

So it wasn't the war in Iraq or Afghanistan. It was that other war in Pakistan.

Nothing like the death penalty without a trial, eh? You are aware that over a million people have died in the 9/11 fallout? Their deaths were made possible by the vengeful selfish attitudes of people like you.

I will find the details of this to be very interesting.  I wonder how much of the details will be leaked and how long the leaks will take.

I have seen one supposed death picture but everyone on another forum called it bad photoshop.

Surprised

OBL Body Headed For Burial At Sea: Officials

http://blogs.abcnews.com/thenote/2011/05/osama-bin-laden-body-headed-for...

"...US officials tell me the last thing they want is for his burial place to become a terrorist shrine. To avoid that an informed source tells me, the intention is to bury his body at sea.."

if true - how convenient.

Slumberjack

We'll likely have to wait for old age to take its toll on the terrorists still at large around the world, such as Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Blair, Netanyahu, Obama, McChrystal, Petraeus, etc.  There'll be no such thing as having the benefit of drones or hit squads for this lot.
