Slowpocalypse

The MSM [mainstream media] is giving excellent coverage of the May 21 2011 apocalypse as predicted by whatshisname the religious dude in the USA.

What we are facing, in the real world, is not something that happens suddenly. Nature takes it's time, for the most part, and the current man-made apocalypse will take 100 years - more or less - to unfold fully. It won't happen in a weekend.

Here is a quote from CBC about events this spring that gives a more accurate view of how things will really unfold:

Images of devastation have dominated media coverage this spring, from tornadoes and massive flooding in the American south to deluges on the Canadian Prairies and Quebec to harrowing forest fires in Slave Lake, Alta.

These disasters have taken a visible toll on communities - damaging properties, ruining homes and endangering if not destroying people's livelihoods.

And thats the way we shall perish. Slowly, getting cold and hungry, the lamb lies down on Broadway.

Our homes will be washed away, or burned - those happen suddenly but we probably won't die at that point - but then we are faced with "what to do now?" as we wander around looking for food and shelter.

That is the kind of warning we need to hear, not this silly "all at once" farce.

I think it's just another view of our situation that we are supposed to accept as inevitable. The crash of capitalism part XXIII or whatever it's at now, was "inevitable". Terrorism is  the inevitable result of those hating us for our freedoms, a "clash of civlizations" or whatever the right is calling their ongoing racist war with Islam and communism since July of 1979.

The future is not written in stone as these right wing fundamentalists would have us believe. It is royalty and modern day oligarchies that are the antithesis of democracy. It is their days that are numbered. It's no wonder superrich elites are feeling so gloomy about their future. The cure for what ails them is democracy. Hope is spreading around the world, and for the oligarchs hope is a most dangerous thing.

So, like, climate change is a conspiracy theory made up by deluded science nerds, but slow dying-off by natural disaster is an act (or several) of God. Gotcha.

I think global climate change is the obvious villain in the catatrophic weather events that get worse every year. And 2010 was the hottest year in Canada on record.  I think things will just get worse - we haven't seen anything yet. Frown

excerpt:

New Environment Canada data shows the year that just ended was the hottest Canada has ever experienced.

Globally, land surface temperatures in 2010 were 1ºC above the average. This marks global land surface temperatures for 2010 as the warmest since record-keeping began in 1880, according to the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Ocean temperatures were the third warmest on record.

All around the world the devastating signals that climate change is happening now and growing in intensity are everywhere. Consider these recent events:

  • Eastern Australia, including Brisbane, the country's third largest city, is flooded like never before with damages running into the billions of dollars.
  • Russia, especially around Moscow, experienced its most intense and long-lasting heat wave in the summer of 2010.
  • Severe floods ravaged Pakistan in the summer of 2010, causing loss of life, agricultural land and infrastructure.

Closer to home, Canada has seen its fair share of damaging floods (on the Prairies), forest fires (in B.C.) and storms (hurricane Igor in Atlantic Canada) in 2010. The statistics also show our climate is changing:

  • Temperatures across Canada were a stunning 3ºC above average in 2010.
  • All regions of Canada were warmer than average in 2010.
  • Parts of Nunavut and northern Quebec were 4ºC above average in 2010.
  • Canada has warmed on average 1.6ºC since accurate records started being record in 1948.

Despite this compelling evidence, Stephen Harper's federal government has done next to nothing to address climate change. Again at recent U.N. climate change negotiations, Canada was an embarrassment on this file on the international stage.

"Perish due to FAITH"?

I think this is a great opportunity to get some insight into human nature.

Some of the followers are saying that this no show apocalypse is another "test from God to persever in our faith".

There are several stories about people who had sold everything, cashed in their kid's college funds, and travelled to California for the rapture.

As an atheist, I could heap scorn on people of faith, but as a humanist I will feel sorry for them. They want an easy out - this world doesn't appeal to them anymore, if it ever did. Who wouldn't want to go to "heaven" [if there was such a thing]?

Lazy. Irresponsibly lazy!! - this world is all we have, and we need to make it better. If you are not willing, then your options are very limited - either delve into a fantasy world [and risk being scorned when it is shown to be false], or watch things deteriorate even further.

In fact, that could be the lesson here - "let things deteriorate even further because you have faith". PM Harper has faith in the free market to make everything right, so he does not take action on global warming, for example. There are many followers of that doctrine.

Meanwhile, Harold Camping has not been seen since the day before the apocalypse was predicted. Is he a coward who cannot face the music as well as a false prophet [twice wrong]? Or was he the only one of 8 billion humans to qualify as worthy to sit with God, and that is where he is now?

Well if he was swept up and not the other pious evangelical international "pastors" and the Pope, what does that say? ;)

Afterall there are spots for another 143,999.

I think the JW's reached that quota decades ago.  There is no room in heaven you'll have to book a stay in purgatory first.  Hard to say how long you will have to stay there before a room becomes available but I here the other resort spots are way to hot.

Sooooo,  Harold didn't ascend to heaven.

What if there was a rapture and nobody qualified?

LOL!!! - THATS what happened!!! Humans are such rotten shits that heaven rejected us all.

Instead, Joplin Missouri got flattened. When will we see the light?

Just to be clear, "Rapture" theology is a recent development (never heard of before the 18th century) that is rejected by the Roman Catholic Church, the Orthodox Churches, Anglicanism, mainstream Protestant churches and even the majority of evangelical and fundamentalist churches.

I think you gentlefolk forget that Macho Man died for our sins.

As such, all prayers will now end with "Ooh yeah!" instead of "Amen".

"Mommy? Daddy? Where are all of our worldly possessions?"

There's a chat nobody really wants to have with their eight year old. "Well, honey, remember when we told you that there's really no Tooth Fairy...?"

I heard a send up comic routine saying how great it was since all the Christians had arisen.  No more clogged freeways, so cleaner air just to start with.  Lots of empty furnished homes for homeless families to choose from. The benefits to the rapture for those left behind would be quite good.  Like redistributing their worldly possessions to the needy.  A win win situation all around.
