Canada is officially pulling out of the Kyoto negotiations after 2012

You won't read about this story in any of the Canadian bourgeois press, because they are ignoring it. Only the international news services like Reuters are reporting it.

[url=http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/06/09/us-climate-canada-idUSTRE75755... Canada confirmed on Wednesday that it would not support an extended Kyoto Protocol after 2012, joining Japan and Russia in rejecting a new round of the climate emissions pact.

The current Kyoto Protocol binds only the emissions of industrialized countries from 2008-2012. Poor and emerging economies want to extend the pact, creating a deadlock at U.N. climate talks running from June 6 to 17 in Bonn, Germany.

The confirmation makes it clear Canada is following the line its ruling party pursued ahead of last month's election.

"Now that we've finished our election we can say now that Canada will not be taking a target under a second commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol," Judith Gelbman, a member of Canada's delegation, told a negotiating session of the talks.

Canada has also previously said it could not achieve the binding emissions cuts it has committed to under the first round of Kyoto up to 2012, infuriating environmentalists and developing countries.

Sensible Discussion

Kyoto is not that difficult to implement but there is a lack of political will to carry it out. This is because a number of politicians have been corrupted by the fossil fuel lobbyists who pay millions into their campaigns and off shore accounts and the people who vote for them drink the Kool Aid and believe these politicians are representing their needs. The other side needs to take the risk and convince the rest of the population that this will be a good thing for the economy and planet earth.

Foreign Affairs needs to be more democratic, today it is the sole responsibility of the Governor-in-Council which the Governor-General on the advice of the Prime Minister. We have a constition given to us when we did not have control over our external affairs. Time for this to change and give Canadians control over our foreign affairs.

The effectiveness of climate change policies put forward by the Canadian government has been wildly overestimated, according to a government-appointed think tank.

The National Round Table on the Environment and the Economy (NRTEE), responsible for the analysis of governmental climate change policies, published their analytical response last week and in the process highlighted a lack of transparency and reliability of government estimates. The report, “A Response of the National Round Table on the Environment and the Economy to its Obligations under the Kyoto Protocol Implementation Act”, [.pdf] not only dismisses the country’s chances of reaching its proposed emission cuts by 2020, but also its fast approaching Kyoto 2012 target.

Canada will announce next month that it will formally withdraw from the Kyoto Protocol, CTV News has learned.

The Harper government has tentatively planned an announcement for a few days before Christmas, CTV's Roger Smith reported Sunday evening.

Quote:

Several countries have criticised Canada for formally withdrawing from the Kyoto Protocol on climate change.

A spokesman for France's foreign ministry called the move "bad news for the fight against climate change", a sentiment echoed by other officials.

[...] A spokesman for China's foreign ministry told reporters that the decision was "regrettable and flies in the face of the efforts of the international community", Reuters news agency reported.

[...] Japan's own environment minister, Goshi Hosono, urged Canada to stay in the protocol.

[...]

Some countries, including India, were worried that the first nation to formally remove itself from the binding Kyoto agreement would jeopardise the future conferences.

For low-lying island nation Tuvalu, most at-risk for rising sea levels, the withdrawal was more personal.

"For a vulnerable country like Tuvalu, its an act of sabotage on our future," Ian Fry, Tuvalu's lead negotiator told Reuters. "Withdrawing from the Kyoto Protocol is a reckless and totally irresponsible act." [...]

But by all means, let's just focus on who will be the most charming leader of the NDP in 2015, because there's fuckall to be done before then.

Not being a party person, you will have missed the discussiion regarding strength and type of environmental position by the leader candidates.

There are limits to what can be done, out of power, as the Senate's killing of the NDP environmental bill demonstrated. But your charge that it's all about charm - "let's just focus on who will be the most charming leader" - reeks of extra-parliamentary dilettantism.

May Accuses Harper of Breaking Law Over Kyoto

http://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/story/2011/12/13/pol-may-kyoto.html

"Prime Minister Harper and his government are breaking the law by withdrawing from the Kyoto Protocol, Green Party Leader Elizabeth May said Tuesday. 'Not only has Canada just ended our commitments under an international treaty, I believe we are in violation of domestic law. I wonder that the prime minister of the country thinks he can withdraw from an international treaty which was ratified by the House of Commons with no discussion in the House, and violate a domestic treaty with no discussions in the House..."
