TTC on defensive after driver seen urinating on Runnymede Station

Not a good way to sell "The Better Way".

It’s been a rough few weeks for the Toronto Transit Commission, and the public transit provider is finding itself on the defensive once more after one of its drivers was seen by passengers urinating on TTC property last month.

A man filed an official complaint after an incident on June 15 in which he said he witnessed another man in a TTC uniform answer nature’s call on TTC property at Runnymede station.

Brad Ross, spokesperson for the TTC, said he could not discuss what actions had been taken against the employee, but affirmed that urinating on TTC property was in contravention of both its own and the city’s rules.

“We won’t discuss the disciplinary action taken, but generally the action is commensurate with the seriousness of the matter,” he said. “And this is a serious matter.”

Mr. Ross called the driver’s behaviour “completely unprofessional and in contravention of our own code of conduct and the city bylaws.” Washroom are provided at every station, Mr. Ross said.

Sheesh, maybe he really had to go. This isn't news.

There is unsavoury ongoing campaign in the media against unionized workers be they TTC,postal workers,Air Canada or other government employees. These incidents are for the most part inconsequential but are used to foster outrage. The toronto star has published a number of such articles and editorial columns attacking workers. Unfortunately there are broad segments of the public who jump at the chance to bash unionized workers. A dense smog of of brutish ignorance and rage descends upon us in the wake of Ford and Harper victories. Welcome to the world of corporate neo-feudalism where you are invited to engage in a frenzy of biting, shoving and scratcing those around you as you feel yourself sinking into the muck.

BS. There's no reason for a healthy, sober, professional driver to pee on the platform. This isn't an union/non-union thing; it's called decency.

These one-off "gotcha" stories are non-news tabloid anti-worker bullshit stories.

Flagged.

Wilder, you have consistently posted topics that are not progressive and your positions are consistently anti-worker. You're a troll.

So it's impossible to be pro-worker but anti-public urination? Ha!. I am pro-worker, pro-union. I don't like public urination. Now, maybe you are pro-public urination, I don't know. But call me a troll again and I will report you to the moderators.

I personally think it's within the reasonable limits of debate to be disgusted by it. Personally, I'm not. But I don't think this is news on the scale of a citywide newspaper, wouldn't you agree? Don't you think the fact that he is a TTC worker is a big part of the "story"?

I don't suppose the TTC would think to build washrooms at the subway stations, even if these washrooms are designed for exclusive use of TTC staff?

When you have to go, you have to go, and bus drivers are no exception. Why there are no bathrooms at most subway stations boggles the mind. Since most subway stops are at the end of a bus and streetcar line, it would make sense, as the disruption to passengers is minimal. That would be much better than the system currently in place in Winnipeg, where drivers will stop a bus mid-route (sometimes with a large number of passengers) to grab a coffee and answer nature's call.

Oh wait, that would actually solve the problem. We can't solve problems now, can we? Much better to leave problems as they are and let things go out of hand so we can sell large numbers of newspapers!

It would be news if any professional did it (peed on the platform) IMHO. If an Air Canada pilot peed on the jetway, would that not make it into the papers? I think it would. So why shouldn't it be news when a professional bus driver does it?

Well then you have pretty strange ideas about what constitutes news. If you can't see the broader context of these stories than you are profoundly lacking in awareness,

In theory, an article could be published about anything. However, I've never seen an article about a pilot, CEO, dental assistant, or student aide urinating anywhere.  Yet in a week I've seen a full article about a bus driver doing so and another about a driver arguing with a person on the bus and getting into a scuffle.

According to this article, a JAL pilot was arrested by police for urinating in public on June 23rd near his hotel in Honolulu. He was kept in custody and as a result, the flight he was supposed to be on was canceled.

Google has other stories about dentists peeing in sinks, CEOs pooping on aircraft beverage carts (in flight) and other bad stuff that I won't bother linking to. In short, professionals who urinate in public and are seen will probably get into the news.

OK, so you found a blog mentioning a Japanese article. You can find an article about almost anything by googling it.

It doesn't exactly disprove the dynamics in the Canadian media.

I just googled "dog waterskiing" and got over 2.7 million hits! OMG what kind of media trend is that??? Quick, someone start a thread about this!

Ok for everyone that is "outraged" at this driver's behaviour but so quick to believe that "these drivers" have done yet another unacceptable thing in public (wait how many have proven to be not as bad as reported by the media so trigger happy to report these things, ah why ruin the fun?). It never happened. He was leaning against a wall talking getting instructions on his job from TTC personel as reported by CBC radio one.

That's about the long and short of it.

WilderMore, this site is pro-labour. This story, akin with stories of TTC employees sleeping on the job, texting while driving, being rude to "customers" et al., are against babble's pro-labour mandate. If you'd like to start a thread about the TTC, don't buy into MSM anti-labour talking points.
