eta: quote: Tahrir succeeded in large part because the people of Egypt made a straightforward ultimatum – that Mubarak must go – over and over again until they won. Following this model, what is our equally uncomplicated demand?

The most exciting candidate that we’ve heard so far is...

deb93

A simple demand . . . one that makes sense would be good, one that Wall St could deliver.

milo204

a fine idea.  as we can imagine from seeing the reaction in the US (and canada) to a protest that only lasts a few hours, this will be busted up by riot cops and there will be violence.

if there's one thing the american system protects, it's the financial industry.  They won't let 20 000 or 200 000 people gum that up for long.

deb93

Then we win.

johnpauljones

if the demand really is to reform the us election laws regarding financial contributions then what is the ask to the fec?  is it simply assumed that a sit in on wall street for an hour, day, week etc will force politicians to order the fec to rewrite the election fundraising laws?

i aske because the us is prob the most litigious society in the world so what is the plan then for the ultimate supreme court case. a case that would be similar in my opinion to Buckley v. Valeo which was heard at the us supreme court in 1976.

so if the plan is to change things for 2012 don't think it can happen so what are we planning for? 2014 midterms? 2016 presidential?

August 9th General Assembly at the Irish Potato Famine Memorial

The 2nd General Assembly at the Irish Potato Famine Memorial was a great success. About 50-80 people showed up, there was good energy and we self organized into a fairly well functioning assembly. We spoke about our personal reasons for being there, the groups feelings about demands and message, and then broke up into committees.

Off the top of my head those committees are:

  • OUTREACH - Next meeting: Thursday August 11th at 5pm, at the Verizon picket line, on the corner of Barclay and West st. Remember, we are all part of the outreach committee.

  • FOOD - No word on this. I've contacted Chris who is leading this committee (as I understand) about a meeting and if I can share his e-mail with y'all

  • LOGISTICS - This group stayed very late. I wasn't able to stick around, perhaps someone who was there can give a write up.

  • STUDENTS - We had a handful of students from colleges around the NYC area.

  • FACILITATION - I am unsure if this committee met or has been formed.

  • INTERNET - I am a part of this committee. We want to form a web space for the General Assembly where we can share documents, ideas, and links to other groups in solidarity. Next meeting: Thursday (aug 11), 5pm @ Earth Matters 177 Ludlow St Though, I suggest we meet in the same place as the outreach committee, as our groups have shared goals.

PLEASE give me any updates, corrects, or new information in the comments and I will amend this post.

"Democracy not corporatocracy" is a good truthful slogan. The increasing income disparity between richest and the rest of us is a specific indicator of the reality and rationale for unrest, a result of corporatocracy, and could be addressed (in part) in Canada with a simple target demand to end corporate subsidies (welfare) and return that public money TO THE PEOPLE! Targeting corporate subsidies of the oil sands might be even more specific and deliverable.Public money out of taxpayers' pockets is being used to pad corporate profits ... right here, right now in Canada, and it will only get worse under the Harper regime.
Early Sept is a hard time to organize for. Coordinating in Canada with Europe's Oct. 11 date makes more sense to me.
Any plans for Bay St?

That twitter page for occupy Bay Street did not tell me too much. Is it really about occuping the Street or about getting into the actual buildings? If you occupy the street, you annoy people trying to get to Starbucks for their break. If you actually occupy the buildings themselves you might actually be able to shut down stuff ie computers, terminals, etc and actually impact THEM.

epaulo13

..imo the main purpose is to have a large gathering then have open meetings. to inspire even more people to come out not to occupy the bldg but to discuss things. then collectively produce a plan of action. if the stock exchange gets shut down..bonus!

2dawall

You can meet at a variety of locations to discuss things; once you have made the decision to occupy a public space or a corporate space, you ought to have plans in advance of what you want to do or the police, security will have it just that much easier.

2dawall

The opening post talks about wanting a presidential commission. And I am saying something different should be done for different reasons, ends, etc. Actually what is ongoing is very different in very different cultures; in those other countries, there is greater understanding, more widespread acknowledgment about what is going on. Here activists are entirely separate from everyone else, in their own big sort (some of it imposed, some of it their own making).

..the opening post i meant the picture and the one demand. sorry. the talk is that the demand will be "ending the influence money has over their reps". that would be huge and something that most people could adopt and get behind. and ever so threatening to the powers that be. at least i think so.

..how i'm seeing this is as a spectator. well a bit more as i herald this square movement. but still i'm a spectator and i see it as alive and growing. people are connecting all over the world. remember this movement was born just a few short months ago. it has grown in popularity, as the way forward, at an astonishing rate. it has accomplished what was not believed to be possible a year ago.

..it remains to be seen whether in the end we can win our new world but this is a stab at it. it's exciting to boot. new organizational frontiers.

..i'm re-posting the swarm. it gives an idea how organizing can be different.

Swarmwise: What Is A Swarm?

A Swarm is a new kind of organization, made possible by available and affordable mass communication. Where it used to take hundreds of full-time employees to organize 100,000 people, today that can be done — and is done — by somebody in their spare time from their kitchen.

There are many misconceptions about what a Swarm is. Let’s begin by dispelling what it is not.

It is not an amorphous cloud of equals, where nobody gets any decision power. While this would be an ideal society to some, it is not a Swarm.

Neither is it a traditional hierarchical organization where commands are issued top-down and people are expected to follow them. A Swarm may look like this from the outside, but that’s not what it is.

Rather, it is a scaffolding set up by a few individuals that enable tens of thousands of people to cooperate on a common goal in their life. These tens of thousands are usually vastly diverse and come from all walks of life, but share one common goal. The scaffolding set up by one or a few individuals allow these thousands of people to form a Swarm around it and start changing the world together....

Ten days until #OCCUPYWALLSTREET

Published 2011-09-08 02:53:49 UTC by OccupyWallSt

Quote:

On September 17, 20,000 of us will descend on Wall Street, the iconic financial center of America, set up a peaceful encampment, hold a people's assembly to decide what our one demand will be, and carry out an agenda of full-spectrum, absolutely nonviolent civil disobedience the likes of which the country has not seen since the freedom marches of the 1960s.

From our encampment we will launch daily smart mob forays all over lower Manhattan … peaceful, creative happenings in front of Goldman Sachs; the SEC; the Federal Reserve; the New York Stock Exchange … and maybe even, if we can figure out where they're being held, at the sites of Obama's private $38,500 per person fundraising events happening somewhere in Manhattan on Sept. 19 and 20.

Our strategy will be that of the master strategist Sun Tzu: "appear at points which the enemy must hasten to defend; march swiftly to places where you are not expected."

With a bit of luck, and if fate is on our side, we may be able to turn all of lower Manhattan into a site of passionate democratic contestation – an American Tahrir Square.

We will do all this with peace in our hearts. Our unshakable commitment to nonviolence will give us the spiritual strength we need to inspire the nation and to ultimately triumph in the weeks and maybe months of struggle that will unfold after September 17....

NYC General Assembly / Sep 17th
08.19.2011 · Posted in General, North America

Four general assemblies have taken place already, we are now meeting on a weekly basis at Tompkins Square Park, every Saturday at 5:00pm. Attendance is of about 100 people each time. There is agreement about the need to keep this General Assembly alive after the Sept 17, as an ongoing open platform for actions and discussions. The assembly is getting stronger and more effective with each meeting. There are several committees meeting separately and reporting to the GA: outreach, tactics, food, arts and culture, and Internet. All of them are achieving specific goals and having weekly meetings. In about a week we will have a web page that will make all this information accessible (minutes, actions, etc).  More info on Sep 17th here and if you are in the UK, a Facebook group has been set up for a gathering at the Bank of England.

Madrid joins ‘Antibanks action’ on September 17th, support to #Occupywallstreet

Posted by European Revolution

Published by the Economics Working Group of Madrid at TomaLaPlaza.net

The Economics Working Group of SOL (Madrid) in support to the initiative “Occupy WALL STREET” promoted by various associations and movements in the United States who have decided to camp out in front of the New York Stock Exchange on September 17 in order to ask for an economy serving the people, the regulation of financial markets, limiting their influence on political life, the creation of a public bank and a fair and equitable sharing of wealth.
We likewise call for all citizens to focus in front of the Madrid Stock Exchange on September 17, a day in which we will discuss those and those that sank the economy, which are the same and the same, institutions now betting against our future and promoting major cuts in social demand. Cuts which not only dramatically slow economic recovery, but also condemn the majority citizens to have worse schools, hospitals worse, worse pensions for our elderly, poorer infrastructure, thus conditioning the future of future generations.
It also clarifies that there is a double reason for making this event on a Saturday, because we want to help our American colleagues, who will begin their camp that day, and because during this time we will organize a forum for presenting lectures and discussions in addition to our complaint, presenting possible alternatives to our current economical situation.....

Call to action: #OCCUPYWALLSTREET

by Jérôme E. Roos on

Adbusters is a well-read high-quality magazine catering towards the insatiable hunger for information and inspiration among the global activist community. Their editorial board has just put out a spectacular call for the occupation of Wall Street. Full article re-posted below (original here, FB event here).

Alright you 90,000 redeemers, rebels and radicals out there,

A worldwide shift in revolutionary tactics is underway right now that bodes well for the future. The spirit of this fresh tactic, a fusion of Tahrir with the acampadas of Spain, is captured in this quote:

“The antiglobalization movement was the first step on the road. Back then our model was to attack the system like a pack of wolves. There was an alpha male, a wolf who led the pack, and those who followed behind. Now the model has evolved. Today we are one big swarm of people.”

— Raimundo Viejo, Pompeu Fabra University
Barcelona, Spain

The beauty of this new formula, and what makes this novel tactic exciting, is its pragmatic simplicity: we talk to each other in various physical gatherings and virtual people’s assemblies … we zero in on what our one demand will be, a demand that awakens the imagination and, if achieved, would propel us toward the radical democracy of the future … and then we go out and seize a square of singular symbolic significance and put our asses on the line to make it happen.

The time has come to deploy this emerging stratagem against the greatest corrupter of our democracy: Wall Street, the financial Gomorrah of America.

NYC & Nationwide Official Occupation and Tactical Plan for #horizontal #mesh-protest #Sept17 #occupywallstreet #usdor
The Tactics

  1. Find space on a PUBLIC SIDEWALK in NYC on Wall Street or as close to Wall Street as possible. If the street is occupied or blocked, move to the next possible block.

According to a 2000 federal court ruling, the use of "public sleeping as a means of symbolic expression" is allowed on public sidewalks in New York City as long as you do not block pedestrians. See METROPOLITAN COUNCIL, INC., Plaintiff, -against- HOWARD SAFIR, Commissioner of the New York City Police Department, et al., June 12, 2000 [99 F. Supp. 2d 438; 2000 U.S. Dist.]

Camping, however, is prohibited. DO NOT SET UP A TENT.

Keep in mind that permits are legally required for assemblies of more than 20 or more people within the confines of NYC public parks, which close at 10pm. YOU DO NOT NEED A PERMIT TO OCCUPY OR PEACEABLY ASSEMBLE ON PUBLIC SIDEWALKS.....

If you can't make it on Sept. 17th, this is a huge thing you could do to help.

Send a letter to the NYCPD expressing your solidarity with the protesters and urging the police to exercise restraint. Also, tell them the world is watching. And thank them for all their hard work.

edit. Imagine what affect it would have if the police got 100,000,000 letters of support for the protesters. Edit. x2 It'd be hard for the media to dismiss all the protesters as wackos and hooligans with that outpouring of public support.

Organizers have appointed leaders?

i like this, no appointed leaders, makes sense....

anonymous 1 points 10 hours ago

Each group needs to be autonomous. Food will be delivered by bicycle to all people openly occupying wall street. We will spread blocks and blocks, through complete square miles of manhattan. We will be peaceful, and our message will be clear. We are America we are legion. And we are occupying wall street.

We the peole, demand a new order for this country. We are fed up with wall street banks running this country. We are fed up wars that never end, that only make money for the military.

We are fed up with a fiscal policy that tirelessly promotes growth and inflation ahead of sustainability. Do we need growth? Do we need CEOs and boards of directors? Do we need banks making billions of dollars in profit, providing no tangible output of work, meanwhile paying $0 is taxes, meanwhile laying of workers for short term profits?

To the op, we don't need block captains. We are 30 mil dissatisfied Americans ready to speak the truth. We will nonviolently spread across manhattan, occupying wall street, and we will change the future of Ameirca.

anonymous 1 points 14 hours ago

There won't be block captains. It was also decided that there would not be marshals at the occupation in order to prevent a hierarchy from developing. However there will be General Assembly's going on for people to participate in and information from the Comms team about what is going on will be available.

#OCCUPYWALLSTREET in Four Days

What will happen this Saturday when thousands of us descend on Lower Manhattan and start walking toward Wall Street?

13 Sep 2011

quote:

If the police try to stop us, how will we respond?

This is what happened in Madrid last month when the Spanish government tried to stop people from gathering in the Puerta del Sol, site of the people's encampment:

"All day long, 300 police officers kept the square hermetically sealed off, even closing the Sol metro station – one of the largest and most important in the city … When the protesters realized they couldn't take the square, they quickly dissolved into a dozen side-streets and regrouped on a number of key locations … For hours now, protesters have been blocking all the main traffic arteries in the city center … Tens of thousands of indignados have brought Madrid to a complete standstill in a spontaneous and defiant bid to reclaim Puerta del Sol … The mass protest is now reported to be headed back towards Sol for a second time, in another attempt to take back the square."

Hey President Obama!

Are you ready for our one demand?

Adbusters , 15 Sep 2011

Dear patriots, rabble-rousers, revolutionaries,

On Saturday thousands of us will occupy Wall Street. We will wave our signs, unfurl our banners, beat our drums, chant our slogans … and then we'll get down to business and hold several people's assemblies to decide what our "one demand" will be.

Shall we demand that President Obama reinstate the Glass-Steagall Act; outlaw flash trading; impose a 1% tax on all financial transactions?

These are good ideas but not very energizing.

How about we demand the revocation of corporate personhood?...

2dawall

Revoking corporate personhood might catch to a larger crowd if it is noticed and if your group can make it to Sunday or Monday but I am not placing any bets.

epaulo13

..the battle for seattle began as a call out on line. there were no leaders. no one knew if it would ever come together. it was to begin on a friday evening where we would gather at a hall to hear people speak. i went there from vancouver. maude barlow came on stage and looked out a the crowd and said "we made it" and everyone broke out into applause and cheers. the place was overflowing with more than 1000 people. the result was the WTO agreement was derailed.

..so you see it can happen!

2dawall

Has anyone else read Nick Fillmore's take on this? I cannot say I agree with everything he says (e.g. NDP, etc) but he has a point about the current effectiveness of demonstrations as not reaching ordinary people.

Take tomorrow's (September 17th) planned protest, Occupy Wall Street, in New York.

Adbusters magazine of Vancouver was the first to call for a day of action to protest the power concentrated on Wall Street.

The protest has the important long-term goal of ending private control of American's financial system. They want publicly-owned, non-profit banks established in every state. While this obviously won't happen, at least not now, it is important to introduce the public to such concepts.

Thousands of people are expected to march on America's main financial district, as well as on financial districts in Paris, London, Brussels, etc.

But it's all pretty loosey-goosey.

"If the police block us temporarily from occupying Wall Street", said their most recent Tactical Briefing, "then let's turn all of lower Manhattan into our Tahrir Square. Let's sing our songs in the lobby of Goldman Sachs and in Chase Manhattan Plaza... .

"Bring signs, flowers, food and a revolutionary mood ... and a commitment to absolute nonviolence in the Gandhian tradition." They admit that "anything can and will happen." Okay, but will this event have a positive impact on the hugely important cause of bringing the all-powerful banks to their knees?

No, it won't.

First of all, there's no specific achievable goal behind the demonstration.

I can't guess how many people will show up, but if even 5,000 enthusiastic radical types block Wall Street-even on a Saturday when the financial markets are shut down-I imagine the New York police will be pissed!

The likelihood of violence-perhaps a police riot, where agitated red-neck officers come unglued-seems more than possible to me. Unfortunately, the whole event is likely to just annoy the people who could perhaps make a difference-people who have money in banks.

http://canadiandimension.com/articles/4163/

2dawall

Subsequently other demonstrations were closed off, closed down by the security forces. The enemy adapted (developed a learning curve); our potential, possible allies have not.

..i don't understand your point. and i don't understand why your against this action. you've questioned it from the 1st time you posted in this thread. can you explain, please.

2dawall

Well have you read Nick Fillmore's piece? It seems that semi-formed ideas about demonstrations bother me. I think organizing should evolve especially with a learning curve with adaptation to make things more effective.

I appreciate your energy and enthusiasm but I am not confident of the event itself.

I think way too many things that the Left does are too semi-organized, that not enough thought is put in, that responses are too knee jerk, too cliche.

I also do not like the symbology; the post Adbusters put together is too 'niche', too directed toward a particular post-modernist arts crowd. The Left is too distant from the rest of the population.

Yes I have questioned it - that should not be a problem. We should be open to discuss the effectiveness of anything - too much of what is done seem rote repetition.

Others should put their four cents in here (inflation on two cents).

epaulo13

2dawall

..i agree there is no problem in questioning the action. i wanted to understand why you didn't and i have an idea now.

quote: (my bold)

In other parts of the world, where neo-liberal policies and uncontrolled market speculation have hit ordinary people hard, there are dozens of huge demonstrations and protests. But in North America, most people have been conditioned to disapprove of protests.

In Canada, following the May victory of the Harper Conservatives, it has been extremely disappointing that large and small progressive and liberal minded organizations—all the way from the Council of Canadian to labour groups to Greenpeace—did not come together to develop strategies to try to slow down the backward march of Stephen Harper.

Several people have asked: if I can't make it to New York City for the occupation, but still want to help, what can I do?

One of many answers is to support those who are at the occupation on Wall Street by calling various delivery places in the area and having food sent to the site. Not only will you be providing food to hungry people, you will also be supporting local establishments as opposed to corporate chains. A list has been compiled of several pizzerias, health food places, and delis around the occupation area from which you can call and order food. The list can be found at here.

It looks like there is possibly over 1,000 people back out in the Zuccotti Park. As more people join the group throughout the day, numbers can only go up from here. We all hope that by the end of the day, more people are willing to stay the night then last night. A little over 300 people slept in the Park last night. Let's make it at least 500-1,000 tonight!

earlier this morning:

Everyone in NYC in Zuccotti Park is staying strong and are keeping at it. They are continuing to be peaceful. The owner of the land is allowing them to stay on the land, regardless of what the authority says. The owner of the land said they can stay if they are peaceful. That's what they are doing, and continue to do. The law enforcement and Fire Department are trying to get them out of the area, but are not allowed to do anything about it.

A Message From Occupied Wall Street

We Occupy Wall Street

This is the first communiqué from the 99 percent. We are occupying Wall Street.

On September 17th, 2011, approximately 2,000 of us marched on the Financial District. At twelve noon, a detachment of us marched on the head of Wall Street and formed a spontaneous blockade, prompting the New York Police Department to threaten arrest. Speakers including the Reverend Billy Talen of the Church of Stop Shopping, and actress Rosanne Barr spoke on the steps of the American Indian Smithsonian Museum to the crowd, which included conscious rappers Lupe Fiasco and Immortal Technique.

Over 1,000 of us marched from Bowling Green Park amid heavy police presence, across the Financial District and chanting “Wall Street is our street” and “power to the people, not to the banks.” Many stayed at One Liberty Plaza, where later in the evening a meal was served and water was distributed. Song, dance, puppetry, and other art added cheer across the plaza.

Two thousand strong, we held a general assembly, based upon a consensus-driven decision-making process. Decisions were made for the group to occupy One Liberty Plaza in the Wall Street corridor through the evening, bedding down in sleeping bags and donated blankets. By 7 AM ET Sunday morning, we still held the plaza under constant police presence. Another assembly is scheduled for 10 AM ET today.

We speak as one. All of our decisions, from our choices to march on Wall Street to our decision to camp at One Liberty Plaza were decided through a consensus process by the group, for the group.
