personally, i really like brian topp.  he's intelligent, compassionate, hard-working and earnest, i like his awkwardness and glad-to-be-there air, and i'm glad he's in the race.  i just hope he doesn't win.  honestly, the more i think about it, the more i like mulcair.  beyond locking down quebec and being an incredible parliamentary/media performer, mulcair just has the personality.  he's the sharpest, most aggressive mp we have, but he comes across as a mensch.  in quebec it's not infrequent to hear him described as elegant.  i hesitate to say it, given the fate and character of the old lying brian, but the parallels are difficult to deny.  mulcair the progressive mulroney, it's not a stretch.

I have found that the organizational leadership capabilities is the most difficult to judge.

And its so necessary. The Leader is not doing the organizing, even managing it. But if they dont have a strong sense of their OWN what it is about, then they will be led. I supported Robert Chisholm before he was a serious contender for leader of the NS NDP. I think I learned from watching him as Leader that people sounding good about organization is not good enough.

So when Jack Layton came to NS for a meet and greet early in the race- I had heard little about him, and listened closely and just watched him. Among other things, he satisfied me that he had a stong sense of organization as a living thing- which he proved in spades from the outset.

Brian Topp definitely has the chops on that score. Its not a determining factor me- just one that for me is a prerequisite to be considered. Brian clears on that one. For everything else, I'll wait to see. [And for me, he has a lot to prove.]

It is the following kind of input by Conservative operatives: Brian Topp will do anything - including forming a wreckless [sic] coalition with separatists - in order to gain power." that scares the hell out of a citizen under a Harper government - but leaves one hopeful that the graduates of Miss Smith's class of scholars will prevail.

Would it be possible for Rabble to invite input from the new New Democrat MPs and their supporters in Quebec?

This thread seems so very parochial without their voices!

KenS

Dont worry, you'll be hearing their voices.

If nothing else, the contnders will be lining them up. And those who dont want to support anyone in particular will have many opportunities to speak up.... and will have more urge to do so once others start speaking for them [as a group].

KenS

As the race goes on- you wont be able to be a front contender without showing some degree of support from the Quebec MPs.

I'm kind of wondering if a number of them are inclined to Megan Leslie. If so, and she's more than 'interested', we'll be hearing about that. [Conversly, Megan perhaps more than the other 'possibles,' might not even consider going for it if she cannot get the explicit support of some of them early on.]

At 830 - in half an hour - 22 Minutes will have Brian Topp and Bob Rae and a whole bunch of other people on. Laughing

Trivia: Joy McPhail was married to Gerry Scott, the last campaign director of the BC NDP.

Also, is it just me, or are all the Conservatives attacks at the NDP lately seemingly designed to get the party off the positive vibe that Jack had set and generate some nastiness and infighting?

Not everything Jack Layton did was perfect. (gasp!)  I thought that was one of Layton's worst mistakes, and said so at the time and I will say it now.   It. Was. A. Dumb. Idea.

No, a coalition would have been worse than Harper, because the Liberals would have dragged the NDP along with it while it did Harper like things.

And, at the next election we'd be sitting with either Harper or Iggy as P.M., and the NDP at 25 seats as the distant third party.

Really? What else can you see in your crystal ball?

I know that without the coalition, we ended up supplanting the Liberals.

Continuing at Round 10.

The 22 Minutes skit was silly in the extreme, but still pretty funny. It was a take off on the CBC's manipulation of the Liberal - NDP merger, and half a dozen MPs participated, including Brian Topp and Bob Rae, as well as Ed Broadbent, Pat Martin, Carolyn Bennett, and Robert Chisholm. Topp did well. Smile

ETA: The last skit had Lloyd Robertson back to work as a Sears greeter. The CBC is heartless. Frown

I tried to do some research on him but there is not much on the web. Why do you say that?
