A Message From Occupied Wall Street (Day Six)

Posted 2011-09-23 07:30:16 UTC by OccupyWallSt

This is the sixth communiqué from the 99 percent. We are occupying Wall Street.

On September 22nd, 2011, sixteen cities from around the country and the world stood in solidarity with us, protesting the disparity of power and wealth that exists in our society. In Liberty Square, no such disparity exists. Everyone's needs are taken care for, food, medicine, water. The only need, the only right, that we cannot take care of is shelter, though this is not our choice. Mayor Bloomberg said that he would give us a space to protest but at every moment he attempts to erode us. He uses absurd police tactics – arresting protesters for using chalk on sidewalks, for wearing masks on the back of their heads in violation of a law that is a century and a half old, for... what, exactly? He uses the tactics of media suppression only available to a billionaire with a media empire. It has not worked. It will not work. We are growing. Each day more cities join us. Each day our movement grows. We demand real change. We will see it.

As organized by our labor working group and outreach working group, we stood in solidarity with Teamsters local 814 and picketed Sotheby's. We are joined and will act in solidarity with the Professional Staff Congress, a union of 20,000 employees from the City University of New York.

As always, our General assembly and work groups kept busy maintaining and securing our space and our freedoms.

Tonight we were joined by a protest against the for-profit legal lynching of Troy Davis. We are all Troy Davis. If Troy Davis had been a member of the 1% he would still be alive. Together we numbered nearly a thousand strong and marched on Wall Street. The police arrested six of us and attempted to incite violence by splitting the march and boxing in protesters, in spite of this, we remained true to our principles of nonviolence. After the police arrested our members we marched on their First Precinct as phone calls from supporters flooded in, urging the police to release the jailed peaceful protesters.

We are unions, students, teachers, veterans, first responders, families, the unemployed and underemployed. We are all races, sexes and creeds. We are the majority. We are the 99 percent. And we will no longer be silent.

As members of the 99 percent, we occupy Wall Street as a symbolic gesture of our discontent with the current economic and political climate and as an example of a better world to come. Therefore we invite the public, our fellow 99 percent, to join us in a march on SATURDAY AT NOON, starting from LIBERTY SQUARE (ZUCCOTTI PARK) at LIBERTY & BROADWAY.

This is a call for individuals, families and community and advocacy groups to march in solidarity.

We stand in solidarity with Madrid, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Madison, Toronto, London, Athens, Sydney, Stuttgart, Tokyo, Milan, Amsterdam, Algiers, Tel Aviv, Portland and Chicago. Soon we will stand with Phoenix, Montreal, Cleveland, Atlanta, Kansas City, Dallas, Seattle and Orlando. We're still here. We are growing. We intend to stay until we see movements toward real change in our country and the world.

We speak as one. All of our decisions, from our choice to march on Wall Street to our decision to continue occupying Liberty Square in spite of police brutality, were decided through a consensus based process by the group, for the group.

At Sotheby's, Finally, the 99 Percent Were the Highest Bidder

Posted 2011-09-23 08:11:39 UTC by OccupyWallSt

At 10 a.m. yesterday morning, activists involved in #OCCUPYWALLSTREET paid a visit to a Sotheby's art auction. Last year Sotheby's made record profits, enough so that their CEO Bill Rupprecht awarded himself a 125 percent raise. At the same time the company decided to use union-busting tactics, demanding over 100 concessions to the IBT 814 Art Handlers Union Contract. With their unionized workforce currently on lockout, Sotheby's continues to operate using scabs and a non-union subcontractor and wants all new hires to have no collective bargaining rights, no health benefits and no job security....

Food fund will be used as a general fund

Published 2011-09-24 12:03:08 UTC by OccupyWallSt

Occupy Wall Street is elated to announce that, through the efforts of our brothers and sisters in the upcoming October 6th occupation of DC (october2011.org), we have today acquired fiscal sponsorship through the Alliance for Global Justice, a registered 501C3 non-profit (afgj.org).

Over the past month and a half, occupywallst.org has been assisting with the collection of monetary donations for food purchases, spearheaded by the Food Committee. These funds have been collected through wepay.com and to this point have remained inaccessible due to bureaucratic difficulties. Through the generosity of The Alliance for Global Justice and October 2011 we have expedited the process for accessing the funds that we desperately need....

Tea Party Crashes ‘Occupy Wall Street’ Protest, Finally Brings Press To Event
September 23, 2011
quote: Up until now, there has been virtually no press coverage for the event. Just a smattering on some news outlets, with a little more coverage on liberal news outlets such as MSNBC and Current. However in recent days, a group of five Tea Party members have set up a lawn chairs directly across the street from the Wall Street protesters, so that they can protest “this liberal agenda of shutting down capitalism.” Since arriving on the scene, news trucks from around the world have focused their attention on this protest of the protest by these few Tea Party Patriots.

We have at least four arrests today during a community march, a fifth arrest is suspected but police will not confirm.

A legal observer attempting to contact an arrested member was not allowed to due to “an emergency situation,” we are currently unsure of what this means. At least one arrest was due to a protester taking photographs. At least one protester's possessions have not been returned.

Please call the first precinct, central booking and the Deputy Commissioner of Public Information and urge them to release these peaceful protesters....

A Message From Occupied Wall Street (Day Seven)

Published 2011-09-24 04:02:49 UTC by OccupyWallSt

This is the seventh communiqué from the 99 percent. We are occupying Wall Street.

On September 21st, 2011, it rained. We organized what shelter the police would allow us and thought. We thought about everything that is wrong with this country, with this world. We talked. We talked about everything that is wrong in this world. There has been no real conversation in this country and this world about wealth and the way it is misused. We are that conversation. Join us and make your voice heard. What is your one demand?

Our voice will no longer be ignored. There are too many things wrong with this world for our voices to be silenced. You know this. We know this. This is why we are here, why we grow every day....

“This is Just Practice”—The Story of the Wall Street Occupation
Sep 23, 2011
A lot of what you’ve probably seen or read about the #occupywallstreet action is wrong, especially if you’re getting it on the Internet. The action started as an idea posted online and word about it then spread and is still spreading, online. But what makes it really matter now is precisely that it is happening offline, in a physical, public space, live and in person. That’s where the occupiers are assembling the rudiments of a movement....

Update: 2 of the 3 computers and equipment used for the livestream have been confiscated and the people arrested. They need people with laptops to come help them out, they are down to just one computer! (self.occupywallstreet)

submitted 2 hours ago by Antranik

Sooo around 1130am PST someone on the livestream got tasered (we don't know why, the police could've been in the right, who knows)... and the place got even more hectic and the cops started unrolling an impromptu orange fence to separate the people and then the stream got shut off immediately after that.

When the stream came back on the person airing it was pleading for people with a decent laptop to come so they could use their computer to stream stuff.

Day 8: Recap
Posted on September 25, 2011 by kellyh
1

On a day that featured a march to Union Square that shut down Broadway, violent police repression resulting in 100 or more arrests, and a stand off at Liberty Plaza between NYPD and protesters, the Occupy Wall Street movement is alive and well and will fight another day.

Around 12:15, a march commenced and proceeded to Wall Street. The column of protesters swelled and quickly became too much for NYPD to contain. The first arrest occured on Wall Street, and tensions between the peaceful protesters and overwhelmed police began to escalate. As the march turned onto Broadway, protesters spilled into the streets defying police orders to remain on sidewalks. The march would continue 2.5 miles to Union Square, snarling traffic along the way with turns onto Canal and Houston, and a brief stop in Washigton Square Park....

This statement represents a fundamental misunderstanding of what is happening in the USA by Al Jazeera and the protesters.  The meager protest on Wall Street is not a well-spring for revolution that is "building on the momentum of the Arab Spring movements".  Rather, it is wishful thinking that is reflected in epaulo13's breathless reporting of the goings-on in these protests.  The real political shift in the USA has been rightward over the last year or two.  The New Republic (a center-left publication) outlines that shift here.

The question isn't whether or not "something is happening".  The question is: Is that "something" going to have a meaningful and long-lasting impact in light of the movement of voters towards the right?

I suspect not.  A year from now, my bet is that "Occupy Wall Street" will be a distant and forgotten event.

2 grandmothers WALKING 200 miles to Occupy DC

Here's what they have to say :

Dear Friend,

You and I represent the vast majority of Americans -- the 99% who have been unfairly burdened by the misconduct of the wealthiest 1% who drove the world's economy over a cliff. People are no longer willing to sit idly by as politicians use their power to protect the wealthy as they cut programs that help the middle class.

For the past week, hundreds of activists have camped out in Liberty Plaza on Wall Street in NYC to protest Wall Street greed and corruption.

And soon - on October 6 - hundreds more concerned citizens will converge in Washington DC to camp out on Freedom Plaza. We are two of those people.

In fact, we are so committed to this cause that we are WALKING 200 miles (22 miles per day for 9 days) from our home in West Virginia to Washington DC.....

"The New Republic (a center-left publication) outlines that shift here."

Center-left? Yeah, right. It's a Likudnick-DLC rag, with an occasional progressive article or two thrown into the mix.

As for Galston's (a classic DLCer) article, it suffers from the same mistaken premise as all DLCers suffer from. It views the electorate as static. That cannot be changed by the presentment of an actual progressive alternative. It also, as even Galston, recognizes ignores the fact that when it comes to specific programs and policies, the electorate is not as conservative as the "ideology" question would indicate.

Occupy Wall Street rediscovers the radical imagination

quote: Why are people occupying Wall Street? Why has the occupation – despite the latest police crackdown – sent out sparks across America, within days, inspiring hundreds of people to send pizzas, money, equipment and, now, to start their own movements called OccupyChicago, OccupyFlorida, in OccupyDenver or OccupyLA?

There are obvious reasons. We are watching the beginnings of the defiant self-assertion of a new generation of Americans, a generation who are looking forward to finishing their education with no jobs, no future, but still saddled with enormous and unforgivable debt. Most, I found, were of working-class or otherwise modest backgrounds, kids who did exactly what they were told they should: studied, got into college, and are now not just being punished for it, but humiliated – faced with a life of being treated as deadbeats, moral reprobates.

Noam Chomsky Announces Solidarity With #occupywallstreet

Posted 2011-09-26 10:57:09 UTC by

Anyone with eyes open knows that the gangsterism of Wall Street -- financial institutions generally -- has caused severe damage to the people of the United States (and the world). And should also know that it has been doing so increasingly for over 30 years, as their power in the economy has radically increased, and with it their political power. That has set in motion a vicious cycle that has concentrated immense wealth, and with it political power, in a tiny sector of the population, a fraction of 1%, while the rest increasingly become what is sometimes called "a precariat" -- seeking to survive in a precarious existence. They also carry out these ugly activities with almost complete impunity -- not only too big to fail, but also "too big to jail."

The courageous and honorable protests underway in Wall Street should serve to bring this calamity to public attention, and to lead to dedicated efforts to overcome it and set the society on a more healthy course.
