Tonight begins the holiday of Rosh Hashana, the start to the Jewish new year.

To all Jewish Babblers, best wishes for a healthy and happy year ahead.

Thanks, Mr. Tea! Shana Tova to you and yours!

I'm pretty sure that's what Zhivago was trying to say at the end of the movie, "Shanyatova!"

Best wishes to all.  May you enjoy sweetness and serenity in this New Year - or is even that too much to ask for in these times?

Rosh Hashanah is a scary time. It starts a 10-day countdown to Yom Kippur, during which the Lord of the Universe (blessed be His name) decides which human being shall live, and which shall die - and in the latter case, how they shall die - based on their deeds of the previous year. The menu of options is graphically set out in the prayer "U'netaneh tokef", chanted in tomorrow's service, where the key section reads:

Quote:

Chazzan:

All mankind will pass before You like members of the flock.  Like a shepherd pasturing his flock, making sheep pass under his staff, so shall You cause to pass, count, calculate, and consider the soul of all the living; and You shall apportion the fixed needs of all Your creatures and inscribe their verdict.

Congregation then chazzan [in some congregations this is recited only by the chazzan]:

On Rosh Hashanah will be inscribed and on Yom Kippur will be sealed how many will pass from the earth and how many will be created; who will live and who will die; who will die at his predestined time and who before his time; who by water and who by fire, who by sword, who by beast, who by famine, who by thirst, who by storm, who by plague, who by strangulation, and who by stoning. Who will rest and who will wander, who will live in harmony and who will be harried, who will enjoy tranquillity and who will suffer, who will be impoverished and who will be enriched, who will be degraded and who will be exalted.

This was the inspiration for Leonard Cohen's "Who By Fire":

I wish everyone peace, progress, and social justice in the new year - and by all means, stay under God's radar at least until Yom Kippur! That character is worse than Harper.

It sounds like a scary holiday, U. I think what must be just as frightening for ethnic Jews in Israel is all of the support and good will they receive from seemingly friendly right wing Christian fundamentalists claiming to be in solidarity with Israel. But are they friends of Israel who fully believe that it is their purpose to bring about the war of wars in the Middle East? The Christian fundies fully believe that Jews in Israel will be reduced to 144 thousand or whatever the number is by a war of Armageddon supposedly due any time now. Annihilation of six million or so Israeli Jews has to be the most anti-Semitic theme I can imagine.

Absolutely.

Shana Tova, then-and may we all LIVE to see the New Year!

Ketiva ve-chatima tovah.

Mr.Tea

Well, I don't know about the rest of you who are celebrating, but I think I've already packed on about 10 pounds in the first day and this is BEFORE the big dinner at my parents' house tonight with my mom's awesome cooking. Time for an apple and honey cake induced nap...
