Don Cherry declines honorary degree

Seems the Royal Military College has [url=http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/story/2011/11/05/cherry-turns-down-rmc-hon... its Cherry[/url].

notice the war pigmedia hasn't mentioned this (at least to my knowlege)? Too many questions, i betcha. Maybe the publicly funded CBC paying this warpig goof $27000 a week (over a $ million/year) would come to majority attention, and that 'wouldn't be prudent' ...the less folks know, the better.

Todrick of Chat...

Clandestiny, I just did a Google news search and this story is being reported by several media organizations. This story has been in the news since later yesterday afternoon as far as I can tell. I have tracking it on several other forums for the last few days.

thanks for update. Cherry would not be on any media if he had anti-fascist, or 'liberal'  type views, and he does not represent main current of opinion, at least not yet (the reactionarkies won the fed election by slim numberrs, and that after outspending the other rightwing gangsters by 2 to 1, or whatever...). I recall a few years ago when the CBC  management (who really seemed to be knuckleheads!) decided, outtta-blue, to get rid of cherry and ron mclain, 'coaches corner'- but a groundswell of anger forced them to reconsider. Now they pander to the guy (Not to mention that bill o'leary guy from dragon's den, another story!) And the media are so utterly predictable i don't watch/listen to it anymore- expecting them to ALWAYS reflect the rightwing pov. And lookit them making a liar outta poor old me!

hip hooray!

Definitely not a fan but who would have guessed that the saner head that would prevail would be his? What a ridiculous decision by the university in the first place!

Gaian

The faculty of RMC rose up in unison and said that he should not be granted the honour...in effect, not any honour, thus shitting upon him from a great height. He could not very well attend the ceremony with the faculty absent.

"The university" did not make the decision, just the ignorant,ass-kissing Conservative administration, anxious to grow the military brand, and perhaps just responding to the urging of some Conservative hack who twisted McKay's arm.

I think Cherry's longevity on the air waves is a result of his detractors attacking mostly for the wrong reasons.

Never has his hockey expertise been questioned, but when you look at his actual record, it's really below what would indicate an "expert" level.  He couldn't coach Bobby Orr and Phil Esposito-- at the hieght of their prowess-- to a Stanely Cup.  Think about that.

His 'patriotism' is actually an affectation he picked up while living in the U.S. It's American style, bluster, unthinking and at the least, devloving into an un-Canadian rudeness. (like, calling Belarus "Belalegosi" during the Olympics)

And, he committed what should garner the hook for anyone in broadcasting, he slandered.

Now, you can attack him for supporting fighting in hockey, but he's long crusaded to make the game safer by advocating no touch icing and a review of the pads that have become weapons, like elbow and shoulder pads.   And you can attack his support of the military when he puts pictures of dead soldiers on T.V. But that's not going to get much traction, and actually ends up helping to make him look good.

As Grapes might say, "STICK TO THE FUNDAMENTALS."

I personally don't care about his hockey opinions, including fighting... He's entitled to his viewpoint. And his support for the troops is no worse than the rest of the MSM and mainstream politicians.

It's his xenophobia (against Quebeckers, Europeans, brown people, you name it) that should get his ass hung in a sling and propelled far from our shores.

I actually believe he deserves the Royal Military Doctorate or whatever honour they were planning to give him. That would have sparked some good debate that might have gotten him turfed forever. Too bad someone (him, or someone smarter) figured it out in time.

The faculty were just embarassed at the idea.

True.

<rant>In fact his political views don't annoy me too much, because there are so many other people like him, in the CBC and Canadian media in general who are considered "serious" to make his reactionarism seem irrelevant.

What annoys me about him is his lack of hockey knowledge. When I watch HNIC I don't want politics. I want hockey and he doesn't even know that.

He's part of that shamelessly pro-Leafs grouping of senile old twits (Bob Cole, Harry Neale, etc, etc) who couldn't pronounce an "ethnic" name properly if their lives depended on it. (BTW, living in Vancouver, Toronto or Montreal - it's pretty sad when a Swedish name is considered "ethnic"). He's one of those people who refer to the Sedin twins as the "Sundins" or who refereed to Markus Naslund as "Mats" Naslund. He knows shit about hockey now a days, though he was never particularly good as a player or a coach back in his day. And yet the dinosaurs at the CBC feel it necessary to keep spending our money on him. Why?

Oh, I forgot, he's a "Canadian institution" like Tim Hortons and Molson Canadian. (Lord, not to be a self-hating Canadian but when I talk to non-North Americans I can't help but admit that some of our institutions are pretty damn lame when they're so obvious it's ridiculous.)

The only reason other than his being an "institution" I can think of is because it's almost funny, in a sad sort of way, to watch him ramble about nothing in particular. He's speaking English but I can understand about 2/3rds of what he's saying.

P.S. Lest anyone think I'm being elitist by dismissing his diction (and saying the word diction), I congratulate him on stealing my tax dollars. Good job, asshole. And that's all I have to say on the matter.</rant>
