Really that's awesome, I'm glad her progress has gone that far. Whose going with her? I'd guess Mulcair, but with the leadership race that's doubtful. If Bob Rae's presence on the show may have gotten the libs a boost maybe REB will do the same for us.

A slight correction to Malcolm on the Forum poll.

Singh has 5%, ahead of Dewar, Chisholm and Cullen, all of whom have 4% (according to 308.com)

For those following the Skinny Dipper online poll, Tom has been moving up strongly from a poor third a week or so ago. He is now ahead of Paul on the first ballot. A few days ago Tom while still third passed Paul on about the third ballot and lost to Peggy 61 to 38 on the last. She now leads him by only 54 to 46.

On the SkinnyDipper poll, I observe that Tom Mulcair isnt the only candidate whose numbers are improving. Niki Ashton has now passed Nathan Cullen - who was winning many of the earlier renditions.

And since this poll is aggregated from the earliest results, that suggests significant momentum for both Mulcair and Ashton.

Partially deaf, but able to cope somewhat with a powerful hearing aid. Last summer I had an incident (blocked sneeze) that reduced my hearing from about 45% (with the hearing aid) down to around 10%. Quite a shock, I haven't fully recovered yet. I don't do sign language - rather I read lips and use closed captioning for television viewing. My parents had a choice whether to send me to the School for the Deaf in Belleville or to a regular school, and, made the choice for a regular school - which was incredibly tough for me, but I'm stubborn as a mule (crotchety to boot) and somehow got through. University was the toughest, because classes were insanely large and usually with shit poor acoustics and no mike and amplification. The 1970s were a dreadful time for hard-of-hearing students in post-secondary education in Ontario. I gather things have improved since.

The comments that were made about the speech in the Dewar video ad didn't mention (or perhaps didn't care about) the fact that they were taken from his campaign kick-off speech. It would be hardly surprising if that was a more general statement of principles. Since then, his campaign has probably focused as much or more on a variety of issues than any of the others (viz his tweets, news releases, statements, policy announcements, etc.).

Still waiting for that Niki Ashton video, of course, to show us how it's really done ;-)

I was aware that Dewar speech was his launch, and therefore guaranteed to be general.

My own contribution to the criticism of nothing being there was really based on observations of him since then. And I might have clarified that.

Dewar has announced a number of programtic initiatives. [Though I have not seen them added to after the first big batch of them.]

My own dissapointment, and I was hoping an elaboration by Dewar might change this for me, is that its the same kind of feel good stuff that we have got in our election platforms.... and when I see more of that, I doubt we are going to see anything that goes beyond safe appeals to what voters of the centre are comfortable with before they even hear a word of what is being offered.

In other words, more of what purports to be 'bringing the centre to the NDP', but is really more of doing that by crafting the NDP to meet the standards of the centre as we find it.

As with Mulcair, since the overall direction isnt really being spelled out one way or the other, one can always hope that it will be 'pushing the envelope'.

My rating of Dewar as being a slightly better risk than Mulcair on that may be mostly because I still think there is a decent possibility that he will come up with something that gives me some confidence.... rather than rating him a bit better on what is out there now.

Boom Boom's parents choice of a regular school in the 1950's is itself pretty amazing.

And as BB probably knows, the deaf schools back then were 'less than ideal'. Even without abuse, the 'enlightened' educational theory of the time was to make deaf kids 'normal'. Sound familiar?

Which meant forcing them to lip read and attempt to talk- which does not work well for the maority of people. And no sign language taught until in the teens. Since that was all that was on the menu, BB was probably better off doing it on his own. Sink or swim is not good, but probably beats having it actively shoved down your throats.
