Canada Urged to Pressure Libya's New Leaders on Torture Reports

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/world/canada-urged-to-pressure-libya...

"The Canadian leader of Amnesty International is calling on the Harper government to use its influence with Libya's new leadership to put an end to the torture of prisoners that the organization says has been taking place.

The new leaders of Libya were helped to power by the air-war waged by the air forces of Canada and major allies. Amnesty said the torture is being carried out by 'officially recognized military and security entities' as well as the many armed militias still active in the country.

As well, Doctors Without Borders says it is suspending its work in Libyan prisons because of rampant torture of detainees, who had been brought for care only to make them fit for further interrogation.."

Torture in Libya: The Ugly Reality of Imperialist 'Liberation'

http://www.wsws.org/articles/2012/feb2012/pers-f01.shtml

"A criminal imperialist war that ended with a brutal murder, has, unsurprisingly, yielded a regime of terror, torture and repression. According to a report released by Amnesty International (AI) 'torture is being carried out by officially recognized military and security entities as well as by a multitude of armed militias operating outside of any legal framework.'

Prisoners are 'suspended in contorted positions, beaten for hours with whips, cables, plastic hoses, metal chains, bars, wooden sticks, and given electric shocks with live wires and taser-like electro-shock weapons,' according to the Amnesty report. A spokesperson for the organization described the failure of the [Canada], US and NATO-backed National Transitional Council to conduct any investigation, much less take any action against the torture, as 'horrifying'.

All of these developments have been studiously ignored by the coterie of 'left' organizations, liberal academics and journalists who played such a critical role in promoting and justifying the US-NATO war for regime change in Libya. Pseudo-left groups ranging from the New Anti-Capitalist Party in France to the Left Party in Germany, [the NDP] and the International Socialists Organization in the US all provided a critical service to imperialism by supporting the pro-imperialist 'rebel' leaders and helping to dress up a naked intervention for oil and geo-strategic interests , as a crusade to protect civilians and promote democracy and human rights..."

Quote:
Armed militias now rule much of Libya, Amnesty International has warned, accusing them of torturing detainees deemed loyal to the ousted regime of Muammar Gaddafi and driving entire neighbourhoods and towns into exile....

At least 12 detainees had died since September after torture, Amnesty said. "Their bodies were covered in bruises, wounds and cuts and some had had nails pulled off," the group said.

The report is a fresh blow to Libya's new government, the National Transitional Council, which helped lead the anti-Gaddafi uprising that broke out one year ago this week and spiraled into a brutal, eight-month civil war.

Since the war's end with the capture and killing of Gaddafi last October, the NTC has struggled to extend its control over the nation. It has largely failed to rein in the hundreds of brigades that fought in the war, many of which now run their own detention centres for those accused of links to Gaddafi's regime.

Amnesty said it visited 11 detention camps in central and western Libya in January and February, and found evidence of torture and abuse at all but one.

One Year Later, Libya's Future Still Very Much in the Air  -  by David Pugliese

http://www.montrealgazette.com/news/year+later+Libya+future+still+very+m...

"Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird beamed with pride last summer as he signed a Canadian bomb that would soon be dropped on Libya. 'Free Libya. Democracy', he wrote.

Canada, he pointed out, was at the forefront of the NATO mission in Libya. In Gadhafi's place would come democracy, the rebels had assured Baird. 'I can honestly say their courage and their resolve are remarkable,' he wrote in the Ottawa Citizen in July.

Defence and political analysts, media commentators and newspaper editorialists have portrayed Canada's military intervention in Libya as a great victory. Canadian Lt Gen Charles Bouchard, who led the NATO mission, has been hailed as a hero.

But almost a year after Canada went to war to bring what it called freedom and democracy to Libya, the African nation is in a state of turmoil.

A poll taken for the Defence Department during the war would later show that Canadians strongly approved of the government's decision to intervene in Libya. Some in the Canadian Forces, however, don't subscribe to the argument...They say it all came down to relations with the US. Once Canada's closest ally had decided to intervene, the Canadian government agreed to go to war."

M. Spector M. Spector's picture

Thanks for that link to Pugliese's very important article. I like the way he summarizes how Qaddafi was until very recently our pal:

Pugliese wrote:
Prince Andrew dined with Gadhafi in November 2008, promoting Britain's oil interests. The British military sent members of its elite Special Air Service to provide training for the dictator's commandos, part of the growing relationship between the two nations.

In April 2009, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton warmly greeted one of the colonel's sons during high-level talks in Washington. "We deeply value the relationship between the United States and Libya," she said.

Less than three months later, Gadhafi himself was shaking hands with U.S. President Barack Obama during a G8 summit in Italy.

Canada also moved to get in on the action. But it already had a head start since Canadian companies had a long history of involvement in Libya, even when Gadhafi was considered an international pariah. Although former diplomats would try to downplay the extent of the relationship once the war against Libya began, an estimated 70 Canadian firms were active in the country, mainly in gas and oil production.

In the late 1980s, Canadian firms, with the backing of the Conservative government, pursued Libyan contracts. In 1989, Calgary-based Husky Oil and its partners spent nearly $100 million, entering into exploration and production-sharing agreements.

In December 2004, then Liberal prime minister Paul Martin headed a delegation to visit Gadhafi and improve trade.

By early 2011, Suncor Energy of Calgary had almost $1 billion in assets tied up in Libya and the Quebec engineering firm SNC Lavalin had won contracts valued at more than $800 million. SNC, with 2,000 employees in the country, was building a massive pipeline that Gadhafi envisioned would bring water in the south across the desert to cities in the north. It had also been awarded a contract to build a new airport in Benghazi and a $275-million prison in Tripoli.

Stephen Harper's Conservative government also forged links with the Libyan strongman. In 2008 the government asked for — and received — the Libyan leader's help in freeing kidnapped Canadian diplomats Robert Fowler and Louis Guay, who had been kidnapped by al-Qaida's affiliate in northwest Africa. During a trip to Libya the next year, then-Foreign Affairs minister Lawrence Cannon thanked the Gadhafi regime for using its extensive intelligence network and connections on the abduction case.

Canada Helped NATO Enable Ouster of Gadhafi From Libya  - by David Pugliese

"...It was May of 2011, three months into Libya's civil war, and NATO had set up a ring of 20 warships to enforce a UN arms embargo. HMCS Charlottetown's commander, Craig Skjerpen radioed NATO headquarters for instructions.

The response was swift: let the ship sail on so the crew could deliver their deadly cargo. A NATO senior officer had boasted just weeks earlier that the alliance's blockade HAD closed the door on the flow of arms inside Libya..."

The emphasis was on portraying those who had taken part in the Libya mission - from cooks to clerks to pilots and aircrew - as 'heroes'.."

A charming new addition to the axis of homophobia and misogyny (the Vatican + fundamentalist Islamic régimes + the U.S. + some African states):  the Libyan delegation to the U.N. Human Rights Commission in Geneva has declared that homosexuality is a threat to mankind and must be combatted as such.

More choice quotes from Pugliese's very useful trilogy of articles:

Quote:
Canada also didn't sit on the sidelines when it came to supplying hardware to the rebels. Five months into the war, Canadian government officials set in motion a plan to provide surveillance drones to rebels so they could better attack Libyan troops, day or night.

The Aeryon Scout Micro-Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, designed and built in Waterloo, was a small spy drone that fit inside a suitcase.

The Canadian government put Aeryon in contact with the rebel's National Transitional Council, while Zariba Security Corp., a private security firm in Ottawa, was to make the delivery. In July, the $100,000 drone was delivered to the rebels by Charles Barlow, president of Zariba and a former Canadian Forces officer. He took an 18-hour boat ride from Malta to the NTC training facility in Misrata, sailing without problems through NATO's blockade.

Barlow showed the rebels how to fly the drone, using it to identify a Libyan military position, and left shortly after.

Quote:
Bouchard, who approved each and every airstrike, said NATO's process was extremely rigorous and geared to substantially reduce civilian deaths.

One investigation by the New York Times found that NATO bombs killed as many as 70 civilians during the conflict, including 29 women and children. Survivors told the Times that one tactic used by NATO was to restrike targets minutes after the first attack, a practice that killed civilians rushing to aid the wounded.

That was the purpose of this conference I had attended...And it was at that conference that the Jamahiriya committed 90 billion dollars to help in the creation of the United States of Africa..That would also include a million-person army for continental Africa to drive back the attempts of AFRICOM and others to occupy the African continent.

That was in addition to the proposal for a gold-backed dinar for all of Africa..The daughter of Kwame Nkruma was at that conference, the son of Patrice Lumumba was at that conference, the grandson of Malcom X was there...The atmosphere was electric with the idea of the re-building, the re-kindling of the movement that these African leaders - or their forbears - represented. Well that was all put to an end by NATO's bombing...

The attack on Libya was an attack on Africa! It was an attack on my aspirations as a person of African descent to have a free and independent Africa. That's what was attacked!..."

As Calls For Intervention in Syria Grow, Vijay Prashad Urges Re-Evaluation of NATO Attack on Libya

video

Libya has just marked the first anniversary of the start of the uprising that toppled Col. Muammar Gaddafi’s four-decade rule. But as Libya celebrates a new era free of the Gaddafi regime, there are growing concerns the country’s lingering divisions will tear it apart. Libya remains deeply splintered by regions and factions. More than 500 militias exist throughout the country, leading to ongoing human rights abuses that resemble those under the Gaddafi regime. We speak to Trinity College Professor Vijay Prashad. “There is a serious need to evaluate what has happened in Libya as a result, not only of the Gaddafi atrocities of the rise of the rebellion, but also significantly of the nature of the NATO intervention. And that evaluation has not happened,” Prashad said. “I’m afraid that is really calling into question the use of human rights as a lubricant for intervention. If we can’t go back and evaluate what has happened, I think a lot of people around the world are afraid of going forward into another intervention where the lessons of Libya have not been learned.”

Russia Blasts NATO Over Libya - And Libya Over Syria (and vid)

"Russia says that NATO should apologize for causing civilian casualties during the air raids in Libya in 2011 and pay compensation. Moscoaw has also accused Libya's new government of training Syrian rebels and instigating terrorism. Russia's UN Ambassador Vitaly Churkin issued his sharp criticism while speaking at Wednesday's meeting of the UN Security Council -  'We expect NATO to acknowledge that its air raids caused civilians casualties, to apologize and say it is prepared to pay the appropriate compensation,' Churkin asserted.

At the same meeting, Russia's UN envoy expressed Moscow's concern about the uncontrolled proliferation of Libyan arms in the region. However, it was not just the weapons that were being exported he said. 'We have receieved information that Libya, with support from the authorities, there is a special training center for the Syrian revolutionaries and that people are sent to Syria to attack the legal government,' Vitaly Churkin said.

'We think  Al Qaeda is in Syria and therefore the question arises: Is transporting the revolution not turning into the transporting of terrorism?'

It's not that I want to defend them Fidel. I really don't. But they pay so frickin' well. And I have a responsibility to my family's financial security. Don't I? Is that so bad? Sometimes I just don't know...

Sorry, I actually didn't read you defending the imperialists against their probable participation in an inside job on 9/11. I naturally assumed that you would have empathy(as opposed to sympathizing with) imperialists on that issue, like you did several years ago in other threads when insisting that it was the Afghan people themselves who kicked-out the evol Sovs with help from no one in particular and exspeshully not the CIA or their Saudi prince friends at the time. Because I would never accuse you of siding with imperialists or their friendly military dictatorships in 1980s-90s Central Asia. Not never.

And so for the sake of political expediency let us return now to criticizing the NDP for their dark alliance with imperialism. RIP General Zia and Elvis bin Laden, Charlie Wilson, the CIA etc. We shall deny them thrice before the cows come home and have to listen to that tone-deaf rooster again.

Impeachment for Libyan War of Aggression: 2 Minute Pulitzer Cartoonist Video (and vid)

If impeachment is suggested in the American case, what should we be suggesting for our own Canadian criminal accomplices?

"...War-murderers are war-murderers no matter where the murderers initiate fatal use of force [H of C, Ottawa].

The above circumstances damn the 'legal' voices as criminal accomplices.."

"NATO is loath to permit a full investigation. It believes that it has the upper hand, with Libya showing how the UN will now use NATO as its military arm (or else how the NATO states will be able to use the UN for its exercise of power) NATO has no challenger..."

"Today we talk to veteran investigative journalist about the 'Responsibility to Protect' doctrine by which NATO has begun waging its 'humanitarian' wars around the world. We discuss where this idea came from, how it has been used, and the way it is shaping international geopolitics. We also talk about the MEK, a bizarre terror cult that is increasingly popular inside the beltway in Washington"

Libya: Brigands, Revolutionaries and the UN - by Alexander Mezyaev

http://www.voltairenet.org/Libya-Brigands-Revolutionaries-and

"As NATO and the GCC persevere with their project of remodeling the Greater Middle East and North Africa, a constant flow of fighters have been crossing from Libya into Syria and vice versa. According to ALexander Mezyaev, far from pursuing peace as stipulated in its Charter, the United Nations has become an instrument of this policy...

There is a special operation to transfer the Syrian 'opposition' brigands into Libya - conducted under the cover of the UN Mission...the UN Security Council's sessions have become examples of cynicism and hypocrisy, a world wide stage for spreading fabrications to promote public opinion support for the most bloody and base crimes..."
