The Greatest Silence - Rape in the Congo

The Greatest Silence - Rape in the Congo is one of 2010's Toronto Human Rights Watch Film Festival entries.  In the Congo sexual violence is still considered taboo and the victim's fault. One woman hopes to change that perception if only for a chosen few.

Quote:
Particularly galling is the reality that the United States had a hand in the bloodiest and deadliest war on the continent.

“In early May 1997, when it became apparent to western observers that the broad coalition of rebel forces in Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of Congo) headed by veteran freedom fighter, Laurent Kabila, would eventually topple the Mobutu kleptocracy and establish ‘a popular government, linking all sectors of our society,’ the Financial Times, the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, and others in the corporate media slowly began to criticize the ‘excesses’ of the CIA-installed Mobutu regime, in power since 1965. But at the same time they began a relentless campaign against Kabila and the rebel coalition.

“The Wall Street Journal spoke of Kabila as an ‘ideological throwback’ to the politics of the 1960s. It decried his relationship with Che Guevara, who had gone to the Congo in the early l960s to work with a progressive coalition (including Kabila) to support the Patrice Lumumba forces and to oust another CIA-installed regime, which had been installed in the diamond-rich region of Katanga. The Journal warned that ‘western interests’ would now be in jeopardy under Kabila.

“For thirteen months, Kabila sought to consolidate a broad coalition to democratize and develop the Congo. But by August 1998, two neighboring states, Rwanda and Uganda, aligned with ethnic forces inside the Congo, (and backed by Washington) invaded several towns and cities. Both invading countries charged Kabila with ‘corruption’ and human rights violations, and with being ‘undemocratic.’

“Both Rwanda and Uganda are governed by de facto military regimes. Both governments are hosts to U.S. military training facilities and U.S. military personnel. The Congo has been regarded by leading scientists and economists as one of the most mineral-rich countries in the world. It contains roughly 70 percent of the world’s cobalt. More than half of the U.S. military’s cobalt comes from the Congo. It is the second largest producer of diamonds in the world and is known for large deposits of gold, manganese, and copper. The Congo’s peculiar type of high-grade uranium was used by the U.S. to make the atom bombs that were dropped on Japan in WWII. And the U.S. dominates mining in that area even today.”[11]

Quote:
Dewar called on the Canadian government to:
Contribute to the UN peacekeeping mission with personnel and resources that are desperately needed
Take action against sexual violence
Monitor the operations of the Canadian mining companies in the Congo and adopt Corporate Social Responsibility methods that ensure protection of human rights and the environment
Change the Patent Act and the Food and Drugs Act to make it easier to manufacture and export drugs to help fight HIV/AIDS and TB
Help protect the rain forest of the Congo through the Convention on Biological Diversity

“Canada’s reaction to the escalating humanitarian crisis in the Congo has been inadequate” concluded Dewar. “Congo is calling – will Canada answer?”

Once again the NDP is pointing out the ongoing genocide of Congolese, more than 5, 000, 000 human beings slaughtered at the hands of U.S. proxies Rwanda and Uganda and mercenaries since the late 1990's. The left needs to get its collective head out of the sand and get behind the NDP, the real and effective opposition in Ottawa.

Why are Canadians so indifferent to our largest trading partner's racist and genocidal policies in Africa? Did we close the book on Africans when apartheid ended in S. Africa and Rhodesia? When will be a good time to confront the bully orchestrating war and genocide around the world?

 - what does Dewar mean by "inadequate"?  Canada is WITH the proxies - was then is now. As is MONUC. As is the environmental lobby mentioned.  This "opposition" is neither "real" nor "effective.  Anyone interested in exploring this area deeper than superficial self-serving ndp flimflam should read Keith Snow:

Here's one that speaks to this thread:

3 Cheers for Eve Ensler

http://uddari.wordpress.com/2009/04/04/congo-three-cheers-for-eve-ensler...

"the propaganda system embraced the theme of femicide. As always the white champions of human rights and humanitarian concern in the end blame the black victims for their own suffering. While raising much needed awareness, the propaganda front serves a selective and expedient agenda, a tool used to pressure certain political groups and provide cover for the real terrorists.."

Anyone happen to know how this film can be purchased quickly in Canada?

in Congo's war

Quote:
Over six million people have been killed in the Democratic Republic of Congo in the deadliest conflict since the Second World War.

A study published by the International Rescue Committee (IRC) in January 2008 said that 5.4 million people had died from 1998 to 2007 in Congo, with 45,000 more victims being added to the death toll every month.

With Congo's war showing no signs of abating, this would put the death toll at 6.9 million today.

Is the world waiting for the Soviet Red Army to liberate the Congo similarly? What's the hurry?

NDPP

Do you seriously seek to promote the filthy call for more Canadian imperialism with your call for Canadian Forces in Congo? The NDP's advocacy of such is merely a ploy to push more Western aggrandisement under the guise of 'humanitarian intervention'. Sorry no sale here. If they're so itching to 'help' Congo, let them show it by persuading Canada to stop blocking an international initiative to forgive Congo's debt.

Say No To Canadian Troops For The Congo!  by Bodia Macheria

http://www.globalresearch.ca/index.php?context=va&aid=18801

"Canadian troops should stay home. The DRC does not need more militarization, it needs justice. Canada can help to advance peace and stability in the Congo without sending a single soldier.."

Fidel

Corporate schills should be happier than pigs in muck because our corrupt stooges in Ottawa take their marching orders from Warshington not the NDP. The conspiracy of silence on the Congo is ongoing.

Meanwhile the holocaust in the Congo continues unabated while corporations rape the country of its mineral wealth.

Everything is fine in the Congo. The NDP and other civil society groups should stop crawling over the corpses of millions for the sake of politics. What fiendishghouls they are. Things are going all their way in the Congo without the NDP and civil society groups blowing the whistle on them.

The world turned their backs on the killing fields in Cambodia after the doctor and madman bombed hell out of it. Then we ignored a number of famines while the Sovs were their only source of foreign aid up to 1989.

And NATO countries turned their backs to the "civil war" in Afghanistan as CIA-sponsored thugs tore the country apart from 1992 to 1996 as millions fled. What's another few million human beings in the Congo?

Why is it that the so-called anti-war movement is so totally ineffectual and even compliant with the holocaust in the Congo? Have we been infiltrated by corporate schills and lapdogs for the right?

it's actually more likely due to that movement's fatal connections to the NDP, which is also why they didn't much materialize on Libya.

I'm not understanding what your concerns are regarding holocaust in the Congo. The NDP says the Harpers have basically abandoned the Congo and other desperately poor countries as far as foreign aid is concerned. And the Harpers/Libs only send Canadian troops to wherever Uncle Sam instructs them to in colonial administrative manner. Basically everything is going according to Murder Inc.'s plan while a holocaust of millions of black Africans continues unfolding in the Congo since 1997.

So turn that frown upside down.

The NDP says Canada needs to send aid to the Congo, and that Canadian mining companies operating there need to be monitored not given free reign to loot and abscond with the country's wealth.

The NDP says that Congolese need vaccines for HIV/AIDS and TB.

But none of that is happening.

Happy?

NDPP

Not at all - but the addition of Canadian 'boots on the ground' in Africa, as some like Dewar and Dallaire have suggested, is only more of the same. Please see Bodia Macheria's piece above:

Say No To Canadian Troops For the Congo!

Fidel

That's right, the only foreign armies' boots that should be on ground in the Congo are those of  U.S.-trained Ugandan and Rwandan troops marauding in over the borders, and those of the "rebels" who they have trained to rape and slaughter in turn.

No worries, because our corrupt stooges in Ottawa are doing exactly nothing about it the same as before. Their motto is trust in Uncle Sam. Trust and obey - it's the only way.

And Canadian troops are everywhere Uncle Sam gives our colonial administrativeship marching orders to except the Congo.

Congo? Not last year or the year before or years before that, and definitely not tomorrow. Ex-nay on the Congo while monthly slaughters and rapes continue at a frenzied pace. It's white man's non-burden by corporate proxy, and they refuse to intervene to stop a holocaust.

It's a green light go on holocaust in the Congo. Afterall they [s]are[/s] were only black Africans. Millions of them.

This could be 1945 Poland but it's not - it's the Congo in 2012.

NDPP

Are you calling for Canadian military intervention in the DRC?

Fidel

Were the Soviets wrong for putting boots on the ground in Poland by 1944-45? What were the allies doing then besides ignoring a Holocaust in Poland for years? Was the Holocaust not an open secret as well by about 1941? What took us so long in not getting to Auschwitz and Birkenau, Warsaw and Kracow etc?

Why are corrupt stooges in Ottawa continuing to ignore an ongoing holocaust in the Congo?

Is it because Canadian troops should not interfere with the excellent work being done by soldiers of U.S. proxies Rwanda and Uganda and the rebels they have trained to rape and commit mass murder in a country that is a cornucopia of riches in the Congo?

Canada - DRC Relations

http://www.canadainternational.gc.ca/congo/bilateral_relations_bilateral...

"..Canada enjoys good bilateral relations with the DRC. Canada maintains its longstanding support of DRC efforts to establish sustainable peace, particularly in the country's eastern region. To support this stabilization, Canada has been involved with international and regional partners in the Great Lakes Region through diplomatic engagement, humanitarian commitment, development assistance and peacekeeping, for which Canada has contributed over $350 million since 2006 in DRC alone.

From 2010 to 2013, Canada is contributing to various projects through DFAIT's Stabilization and Reconstruction Task Force (START), with a focus on security-related issues, fighting the illegal exploitation of natural resources and land conflict mediation.  Since 1999, Canada has contributed more than $300 Million toward MONUC/MONUSCO to support peacekeeping efforts. The Canadian Forces (CF) currently occupy up to twelve positions in MONUSCO where they provide highly valued leadership and expertise in fields such as military and information operations, training and military liason.."

Fidelio - Canada only goes where Uncle Sam wants it to go and doesn't go where Sam doesn't. If the NDP are suggesting we go there, then rest assured we'd only be going as Satan's little helper once again. Nothing else is permitted.

Fidel

And with the emphasis on has contributed as in before the Harpers.  Pff! Twelve advisors? Who knew?

Don't worry they are swimming in their own blood in the Congo. It's a bloodbath. And your corrupt stooges in Ottawa won't be sending any peacekeepers to the Congo soon. Not without Uncle Sam's say-so which isn't on order.  We can't interfere with the humanitarian work being done by US proxies and mercenaries in the Congo raping and slaughtering willy nilly.

You must overjoyed by the Harpers impotence in Ottawa. Trust and obey - it's the only way. It's a wonder Uncle Sam doesn't tell them all to go jump in the Rideau for laughs. They would probably do it without question.

Harper out of step with world on aid CIDA announces cuts to bilateral aid in African countries, Congo included

NDPP wrote:

That's just it we're not there. And it's because Uncle Sam doesn't want us there in the same way that Uncle Sam doesn't want any Canadian navy ships running into U.S. nuclear submarines patrolling Canadian arctic.

Our corrupt stooges are obedient lapdogs and do as they are told. And they have no instructions from Uncle Sam to send troops to the Congo. That's not their turf.

Meanwhile slaughter in the Congo continues at a frenzied pace and, rest assured, without interference from the NDP or anyone else. Satan has many little helpers in the Congo already - they were trained by the U.S. Military and U.S. proxies Rwanda and Uganda. The trains are running on time in the Congo where they are running out of places to bury the bodies.

NDPP

So you do support Canadian military intervention in Congo.

I don't. Nor does the highly respected and knowledgeable organization Friends of Congo. Nor does Professor Macharia

Your ndp gobbledygook of 'humanitarian intervention' in Congo as advocated by Dewar and Dallaire,  following so closely upon ndp consent and approval of NATO's destruction of Libya, is not something I can or will support.

I think you must either be drunk or perhaps you're drowning in your own political contradictions which seem rather more fully on view  than usual. The poison is not to your credit. In any case you're far too out there for me tonight man.

Fidel

NATO? Hang on? I am not the one with a laissez-faire attitude toward holocaust in the Congo compatible with that of the Atlantic Alliance countries. That would be closer to what youre advocating, which is to do nothing as far as I can tell.

And the NDP's list of things to do in terms of aid and cooperation for the Congo is more compatible with Macharia's list of needs than the Harpers or NATO countries collective pledge to do nothing - just like the Atlantic Alliance did nothing to liberate the killing factories near Kracow in the 1940s.

The conspiracy of silence is deafening.
