Olivia is doing an amazing job.
NDP Leadership Race #137
I am sorry to ask but I can't get what is going on here. I am not watching the converntion right now. Did something happen with Libby Davies?
Olivia is awesome - and her speech is better than all the seven candidates! She's showing them how to do it.
Wow - Olivia's speech was a barn burner!
Just saw the end of Olivia's speech, wow! Why didn't she run?
As I just wrote in the wrong thread:
Wow, Olivia is a strong, powerful speaker tonight. Has she been keeping it low-key until now? So as not to compete with the contenders?
Tomorrow is her 55th birthday.
Whoever wins the leadership should try to persuade her to become one of the deputy leaders. Not for the nostalgia. Because we need that power!

They're talking about an incident and its aftermath almost two years ago.
Hey, they're replaying the speeches by the candidates and Cullen is on now. He is the same age as me! Wow.
Time to let it go folks, jack Layton didn't harbour grudges, so why do you?
Well, no question Olivia was amazin' tonite, but there absolutely has to be at least one deputy leader from the West if we are going to take Harper down.
That's a great suggestion Wilf, but I think that Nathan Cullen, if he doesn't win, needs to be there as well.
Invoking the name of Jack in an attempt to bolster party unity, will not make me warm up to Thomas Mulcair. I am sure that the majority of members will come together to support whomever is elected the leader but I will certainly wait to see the newly led party in action before I commit to working, supporting or voting for the NDP.
Joe Comartin is on CBC saying the NDP had a meeting after Ed's comments about Mulcair because Broadbent's comments were very concerning to them; and they came out urging party unity. I wonder how he feels about Ed's comments today.

How about Brian Topp, who did the same thing? And I think others invoked Jack as well.
It's essential to have party unity, as both the Cons and Lib commentators on Power Play aluded to the party being split.
The NDP Caucus met tonite just before the tribute to Jack Layton. It sounds like the Topp campaign had its knuckles rapped concerning their lack of being unified within the Party. Good!
No disrespect Boom Boom, but I wasn't referring to the candidates but this forum. It's like anyone who expressed doubt or dislike of Mulcair was delegated into a "get over it" category.
Evan Solomon just had a hliarious moment with Rebecca Blaikie - she said she's staying neutral, and will be only having one drink at each of the hospitality suites. Evan just said well, there's seven candidates - that's seven drinks - that's the kind of party the NDP is, where having seven drinks is taking it easy!
Well today's event definitely invoked the old time NDP religion. Olivia tore the place apart. It was humbling. If the party proceeds as a TEAM all will be well.

I'm comfortable with Mulcair's style, but I have noticed some women aren't as comfortable. If Mulcair wins, can you picture the two deputy leaders as Niki Ashton and Olivia Chow, plus Françoise Boivin as Quebec lieutenant?

I didn't realize he was that old. :-)
Ducks, covers and slinks out of the room.

Cullen will be 40 on July 13. Unlike Michelle, who I expect has no plans to be 40.
Agree that was an amazing speech by Olivia!
Arthur Cramer, Mulcair tried to distance himself from Libby Davies in a way that threw her under the bus. I think that this speech today was his way of saying that he is not the same person who would do that sort of thing in the future.

Tomorrow, as people get knocked off the ballow, let's make the next leadership thread a knock off thread where we praise the person knocked off and speculate what sort of role they will have in cabinet.

And you really think he'll name women as lieutenants?
Every time Topp says we can win "and it'll be worth it," some people take that as a slam at Mulcair. But I remember 1990. We elected a government in Ontario, and it was not worth it. In fact it set us back for 15 years.
I also think that saying "we need to commit to our principles" and stuff like that is a bit of puffery. I don't think anyone is necessarily saying that to say "my opponents won't commit to our principles". Just that some candidates think that saying it more often will make you seem more committed :)
The NDP is a big party. Just because your guy/gal doesn't win, doesn't mean there's not still room for them in the party. And there's certainly room for all their supporters. The worst thing you can do, IMO, is give up, and withdraw from the political system. Unless there's genuinely another party where you think your influence will matter.
And you really think he'll name women as lieutenants?
He is extremely well-controlled and self-aware, as a good courtroom lawyer should be. If he has any anger issues, he can control them, as I was sure he could. If he has any Type A Personaility issues, he can offset them. Naming women would be a great step.
And if you want to be a cynic, you can imagine that he would not feel threatened by them. (Ducks and runs.)
Watching the CPAC coverage of the speeches. I like something in almost all the candidates, including ones I won't be voting for. But every time Brian Topp opens his trap he offends me. People talk about Mulcair, but the only candidate who has shown a real and wide mean streak is Topp. What a nasty piece of work he is. I can live with any leader, but Topp winning will have me examing my level of involvement with the NDP. I'll respect the decision of members, but that is about as far as it will go.
I'd never seen Ian Capstick (or even a picture of him), wow he looks like Beavis.
I agree with Bookish. The team of Topp and Broadbent really turn me off. Both of them are so old school.
Whoever wins the leadership should try to persuade her to become one of the deputy leaders. Not for the nostalgia. Because we need that power!
I asked this before, and my apologies if I've forgotten or missed it, but I don't recall anyone offering an answer:
What does a deputy leader actually do?
Topp turned a lot of people off with some of the attacks. But I don't think he's an ass. I think he's ruthlessly strategic, and we need a few people like that in our party. When he failed to gain traction on policy, and when he lost some limelight midway through the campaign, he had two choices. Gradually fade away and lose, or shake the race up. So he tried to shake the race up. It didn't really work. I don't fault him for it. He stopped well short of getting personal or vicious. He could have gone after Mulcair on his French citizenship, but he didn't. He could have called Mulcair a liar, but he didn't.
Guaranteed, Brian Topp -- win or lose -- will endorse and support the leader -- Mulcair or otherwise. The race will come to an end, people will let go of these really minor scraps, and we'll unify.

Supposedly, take over for the leader if they're unable to fulfill their duties.
Not this time though.
*shrug*
We have thread #138 open:

Flagged as offensive! ;) (Kidding!) Actually, I'm not quite 40 yet, but turning this year...)
NorthReport, I'll "get over it" when Mulcair shows even the slightest bit of remorse for what he did to a colleague. Otherwise, what laine lowe said, except I'll go further - I won't be working or voting for the party (I'm already no longer a member) if Mulcair leads it, unless I see some substantial evidence that he has mended fences with Davies, is no longer "an ardent supporter of Israel in all situations and in all circumstances", and that his "I'm just a sweet and loveable guy, just like Jack" campaign face is actually reality.
I don't check my brain or my standards at the door in the name of anything, least of all in the name of "party unity". I have a brain, and I'm not afraid to use it.
