Time to rally around Nathan Cullen he is on a roll and can excite

Interesting.

socialdemocrati...

85% of the votes were cast in advance.

Any movement between the candidates now is almost entirely symbolic, not strategic. Very few people are watching the convention floor for what they do next. I suspect that all 15% of the real-time votes might not show up in the second round.

I don't think any of the candidates will throw support to another candidate. Seeing as their support would only be symbolic, it's more valuable to use their endorsement as a symbol of unity than a symbol of "trying to stop" another candidate.

Any besides Singh that is.

I've often felt like Cullen is the most "exciting" candidate. That is, picking him has the most potential to build a young and energetic movement, as opposed to the more conventional leadership candidates.

I'm honestly not sure what to do. Me and my GF are gonna talk. I think we might vote for different people.

Tamarind

Looks like Rathika Sitsabaiesan has endorsed Nash.

Michelle

So, who's the best "stop Mulcair" vote for the second ballot?  Cullen?  Topp?

North Report wrote:

Cullen: must be happiest of all.

Mulcair: looks happy and now all of Singh's votes will go to him

Topp: who has been the odds on favourite with the party establishment since the beginning looks disappointed. Dewar has not come over to him, and his supporters are going all over.

You are spinning. Not that it is new.

Listening to you before, he was guaranteed to be way behind.

Mulcair does not have all of Singh's votes rapped up, though I'm sure he will get the biggest number of them.

And of course Nulcair would look happy. But I seriously doubt that he was pleased with that start. But most people, including supporters, know that.

Arthur Cramer Arthur Cramer's picture

Boy that James Moore is a jerk! And Codere and Brisson (I can't stand Brisson by the way, and I served with him in the reserve), oh Tom Mulcair is so mean, and look at what a failure the NDP convention was, no one voted. The NDP is going down.

Jerk offs!

I'm very glad that Nash is still in the race. All three of the others will "lead" the party towards the mushy middle. I was somewhat concerned about such drift under Layton, and his posthumous popularity seems to have accelerated the trend.

Anyone else having trouble logging in for the second round vote? It has crashed twice.

jjuares

Maybe sme people are now going to vote as they wake up so turnout Let's hope so.

Most CAW members who have voted for Peggy as their first choice have also selected Cullen as their second choice

I'm having trouble.

KenS

I dont know if there is a best anyone but Mulcair strategic choice.

I'm pretty sure that Mulcair would benefit the most from Cullen being the one to drop next. Maybe that makes him the best ABM, but I am not so sure of that.

timothy

Per past conventions in BC and Ontario the number of valid votes cast will drop ballot after ballot, largely due to voters' candidates dropping off and not making a second or third choice. I anticipate the number of on-line votes will shrink - after all, people had 14 or so hours to vote on-line for ballot one vs an hour for ballot two. It is delusional to think there is this vasty army of people sitting by their computers on a saturdy morning just waiting to vote when they haven't done so in three weeks. Mulcair has won this race but frankly it's great the media doesn't understand preferential balloting and keeps talking about it. I at first couldn't understand peggy staying in (or cullen for that matter) but they have done the party a service by doing so and stretching out the free tv coverage. Plus the longer it goes it gives MPs time to 'come to Mulcair' and build up the unity narrative. I suggested to someone that Thomas' first dinner guest at Stonoway has to be ED. Other than him, everyone else will be more or less happy.

KenS

I guess that means the vote will not close as sceduled: 12 minutes ago.

Brachina

When do the results of the 2nd ballot get released?

It took me 4 tries.

Two of three got through, with slight delays, through refreshing, but vote three in this house is hanging and not going through

Wilf Day

On the third try I logged in ok, and got as far as "Vote" -- then it crashed again!

Michelle

The voting site is crashing for radiorahim as well - he's getting a time-out.  Probably a server overload.

Skinny Dipper

I finally got my second ballot through.

Naomi Klein: Some of the people crossing the floor to Mulcair seem to be driven by fear of reprisal, not conviction. Bad sign

Wilf Day

Now I can't even get to the secure site at all -- three times in a row!

Keep trying.  I got through after a couple tries.

Naomi Klein ought to be ashamed of herself. How does she know that? Bull ****!

NorthReport

That's nonsense that one candidate's supporters are calling for people to be fired in head office.

The Topp/Broadbent establishment must be quite disappointed to only get 21% seeing as Topp was the odds on favourite at the beginning of this race.

server crashes ?? Seems B.C voters have awoken !!

I'm surprised you seem to think Mulcair will probably lose.

I'm amnong those not suprised by Peggy's showing. Quite a while back I decided she is too poor a preformer, and dithered too much. I didn't expect that sense to spread, but I'm not surprised it apparently did.

But I'm responding mostly to take major exception that Topp's support is all about not caring about winning. It's not like there haven't been plenty of us here on Babble saying otherwise.

Buddy Kat

Just heard the NDP bragging about the amount of online voting memberships they have ..I would be scared of that idea ..especially after what we have just witnessed with the desperation and criminality of conservatives ….What stops crooked conservatives by the 10 thousand score from buying an NDP membership and skewing the leadership and voting process?

They are still petrified of Mulcair ….just saying after listenig to the conservative observer....

I hope Mulcair wins after the 2nd ballot ..or Cullen as a second choice ....These are the only 2 capable of destroying the Harper regime..

Sid Ryan telling Peggy to move ?? While second round votes going on ?? WTF??

TheArchitect

Sid Ryan is calling on Nash supporters to move to Brian Topp!

BelatedBallots

Sid Ryan just absolutely tore into Mulcair and suggested Peggy thinks the same way. Not a fantastic image for the public to see.

Michelle

Oooh, Sid is telling Peggy Nash to drop out and support Topp in order to stop Mulcair.

Sid is saying that he's been hearing about an ABM movement before coming to Convention.  He says he doesn't want to see Mulcair win because he doesn't think Mulcair has much support for the labour movement and he doesn't like Mulcair's position on the Middle East.

I'm not sure I want Nash to drop out now, but I completely agree with Sid on everything else!

Boom Boom Boom Boom's picture

Sid Ryan asking Nash to move to Topp now, can't stand Mulcair.

You are a riot NR!

Not good enough that you've been proven wrong, you go ahead and read in dissapointement in the Topp camp.... as if every one of them just walked into the room from a nap they took in September.

They're happy. They know they still have an uphill haul. But they're happy.

Michelle

He didn't say that Peggy believes the same thing.  He's saying that he is a Nash supporter and this is what he would like to see Peggy do.

That would be very much up in the air with all the crashing of the site.

Arthur Cramer Arthur Cramer's picture

You know, just watching Sid Ryan. I am getting so sick and tired of these guys. Where was the vote in Oshawa? They can't deliver their vote and they want us to just shut the hell up. I don't want Topp, we are finished if that happens. You know, I went to my local NDP AGM last weekend and three times motions were tabled because 1 union rep indicating Manitoba unions wouldn't support the resolutions, despite the fact the other 40 members in attendance supported the motion. Everyone of the motions the uniond didn't support were withdrawn. What, some voters are more equal then others? Talk about Animal Farm! That is garbage! He also just threatened Peggy Nash. He said he should support Topp openly and that if she did so "here future is very bright". Garbage, just pure unmitigated garbage!

What a jackass thing to say.  Unbelievable.   Really that's what would motivate a Charlie Angus or a Linda Duncan.  Klein just dropped a huge amount in my esteem.

After seeing what he does to other colleagues who cross him or his opinions, it wouldn't surprise me a bit.

And that he thinks Peggy has the same values as him, which are diametrically opposed to Mulcair.

Looks like Labour is divided between Mulcair, Topp, and Nash.

Michelle I am pretty mad about what you said regarding people's feelings abou wanting others fired because they didn't support Mulcair. You have a hell of a lot of nerve.

Wow - just heard the suggestion on CTV's coverage that in order to stop Mulcair, Brian Topp may have to drop out in a later ballot and throw his support to Nathan Cullen!

That's an extraordinary situation to consider!

That would be one of those dumb 'pundits'. Or an 'insider' with an agenda.

I dont think Brian Topp is ABM.

And I dont know if he would choose Cullen over Mulcair.

At any rate, I dont think you will see either dropping out. Though I would agree it is a possibility if Cullen moves up a LOT in the next round, and if he would rather have Cullen.

I'm not too surprised either. I didn't think she was doing very well in BC, and needed to do very well in Ontario to be second.

Mucker

There's a huge irony in the actions of the establishment over the course of this campaign, especially in the last few days.  When is the last time the establishment of a party flirted so closely with tearing the party apart?

Boom Boom Boom Boom's picture

Are we seeing a problem with the idea of online voting - servers can't handle a huge influx at any one time?

Your last line is a good description of the rest of your post.  But I think you're definitely supporting the right candidate with those opinions about labour.

And he didn't "threaten" Peggy Nash.  He was saying that Nash taking the initiative now and moving over to Topp looks better than if she is forced to drop out.  I don't necessarily agree with that assessment, but it was hardly a threat.  I think your imagination is working overtime.
