Trudeau versus Brazeau

good grief!!!!

Boom Boom Boom Boom's picture

CBC Newsworld reports that lightweight Justin Trudeau (MP) will box heavyweight Patrick Brazeau (Senator) in a boxing match for charity at the end of March. Brazeau has a second degree black belt in karate and served in the Canadian forces. Trudeau has been training since November, but is still going to get his clock cleaned, although both men will be wearing head protection. I think this is a silly way to raise money for charity, although CBC predicted it will be sold out. I hope there's a doctor at ringside, because there's potential for serious injury here. Trudeau is no match for Brazeau. I hate boxing, period, and feel it should be outlawed, as well as these new extreme fighting sports. Trudeau wanted to take on Rob Anders or Peter Mackay, but both were too busy - Brazeau was the only one who volunteered to take him on.

theleftyinvestor

You have to admit that its pretty satisfying seeing a Conservative knocked out.

Boom Boom Boom Boom's picture

Oops - I made a mistake above - Trudeau and Brazeau are about the same size. I was shocked to see that Trudeau is actully taller than Brazeau - all the photos I've seen the past year suggest Brazeau is a big, stocky fellow - not so.

Especially this one.

contrarianna

He wasn't actually knocked out, it was a ref stoppage (nonetheless humiliating).

Aficionados of boxing would not, in itself,  find the match especially good.

As I posted elsewhere:

Tommy Douglas was an excellent amateur boxer, winning the Manitoba championship. At 135lbs he could have flattened either of the two.

But kudos to Justin who embarrassed the room full of Con MPs.--I also mis-predicted he'd lose.  Conditioning was the main factor as Brazeau punched himself out after about a minute.

The Senator thought it was a swimming competition.

Quote:
[Tommy]Douglas was a scrapper clear into his sunset
years, as McGuinness reveals in one last tale,
where muggers with knives confronted Irma
and Tommy on a Jamaican beach. When the
sand settled, the elderly Douglas’ dilemma was
how to explain two bodies down and a swelling
left hook.

...or as Sun News reported it "Justin Trudeau Assaults Aboriginal Man"

i don't know why trudeau wasn't the favorite goin in, he's been boxing on and off for 20 years.  like any fighting sport, the person with the most experience, and the better cardio, usually wins...

Tommy_Paine

What surprised me was how serious these guys took it.  They preped for months in advance.

In fairness to you, BB, I can see from this pic why you thought Justin would get his clock cleaned. Brazeau appears to have maybe thirty pounds on him, and it's not flab.

Edited to add: the senator thought it was a swimming competition in 1983.

contrarianna

Only 3 lbs at the earlier weigh-in. Shorter reach but more muscular, professioanl betting had Brazeau as a 3 to 1 favorite with his 2nd degree black belt in karate and his military training.  Justin was not devoid of skill and getting Brazeau past rnd 1 put him at a cardio sinkhole.

Brazeau has been talking about his long experience in the martial arts - he has a black belt in something. Plus he's three years younger, was in the Navy, grew up in a tough neighborhood, etc....

flight from kamakura

i watched an interview with the two and realized that i actually hate justin trudeau.  everything he said sounded fake, he just has this fraudulent personality that i find extremely irritating, nothing like his father, who was a cunning snake, but always quite candid.  i actually like the no-nonsense conservative senator quite a lot better.  incidentally, where the fuck the harper find this guy?  the sooner the senate is gone, the better.

and back to trudeau, if the bq really does fold in the next election, we'll oust him in papineau, no problem.  after mulcair becoming pm, that'll probably be my biggest thrill of the night, ahead of any cabmin defeats.

Trudeau had 4 inches on Brazeau and likely a reach advantage as well. That's tough to beat unless one has some training in boxing. It takes a special kind of brawler to overcome those physical advantages. Mike Tyson was that kind of stocky brawler often taking on opponents who were 6-3 in height and taller, and making them feel like they got out of the wrong side of bed that day when the match was over. Joe Frazier was another. The shorter brawlers can't allow themselves to be measured with jabs and stay on the outside. Recipe for disaster for all sluggers.

He is the lowest of the scum. [url=http://rabble.ca/babble/aboriginal-issues-and-culture/whats-wrong-brazea...'s[/url] how I felt about him in 2008:

Quote:

Patrick Brazeau is an ambitious pal of Harper and his policies. He attacks mainstream Aboriginal organizations. He calls for federal funding of Aboriginals to be frozen until "accountability" can be established - just like any neo-con would do. He condemns the Kelowna Accord because it was going to hand out money without "accountability". He likes Harper's approach better. When the "coalition" was formed this month, he asked so-called "rhetorical" questions, such as:

"Does the formation of a coalition government take away from one's right to vote?"

"Does the fact that the Bloc Quebecois (a separatist party) would hold the balance of power ridicule our parliamentary system and democracy?"

He wants Harper to pass legislation on "accountability", and wants funding to bypass the chiefs and go to the "grassroots" people.

If he didn't self-identify as Aboriginal, he would be condemned as a typical neo-con splitter of Aboriginal peoples and ally of the worst elements in the Harper ranks.

Anyway, why worry about him now? For his loyal services to Stephen Harper, he was named to the Senate last week. I would imagine this means he now has his personal grant and won't be worrying about accountability any longer.

There's much more information in that thread.

It's a shame Brazeau lost on a TKO (is that what it's still called?).

A big reach advantage didn't help Tommy Hearns against Ray Leonard and Marvin Hagler either.

Trudeau just looked so scrawny in comparison. But maybe that speedo cut off Brazeau's circulation, who looked like he was doing a bad Charlie Sheen imitation.

Brazeau had proper boxing shorts on in the match.  That photo I posted was at the weigh-in.

Ah! Yes that's true. But the tall and lanky Hearns knocked out quite a few sluggers before meeting Hagler and Sugar Ray. Hagler and Ray were extraordinarily gifted fighters possessing blinding hand speed and the ability to deliver power shots with either hand. And they were excellent athletes in amazing physical condition who and mostly always prepared.

Tommy "the hitman" Hearns absolutely destroys left-hook knockout artist Pipino Cuevas and makes it look easy. 1980

I was an amateur boxer at the Y in my teen years. Fought 139 junior welter, although I was always about 137 soaking wet at weigh ins. I once fought a person from Michigan who was in the 156 weight class. And amazingly I won by split decision. I certainly did not look or feel like the winner afterwards though because he hit like a tank or so it seemed. He had 5 o'clock shadow on his face and I was still had peach fuzz. Romero if you're out there...

I wasn't very good and lost my first five bouts at the novice level. Won the next three in a row and quit.  I enjoyed the training and comraderie and travelling to new and interesting places, like Ottawa, Toronto, North Bay and Sudbury. And there were a few international matchups in Saginaw, Flint, Detroit, Battle Creek Michigan of all places. Met some really good amateurs in their day, like J.L Ivy, Hilmer Kenty, Ray Jackson and many more. Met Milton McCrory. When I was 16 I fought a garage attendant from Detroit , a high school near Belville was the scene of the rumble. He was about 25 or so. I remember lots of people who didn't look like me. I was pretty scared because the locals were very vocal for their fighter. We were treated very well.

We had a tour of the Kellog cereal factory. Met a member of the Spinners musical group who owned the motel where we stayed overnight. Yes I enjoyed the physical training but not the broken noses and bruised ribs, chest, arms, elbows and whatnot. I don't recommend it. My father died when I was 14, and I suppose I felt vulnerable and had to man-up for some reason. Met some really nice people, though.

Alexis Arguello vs Aaron Pryor (I) 1982. I think the boxing purists all though Arguello was going to win against the unorthodox and shorter slugger. Arguello was a textbook stand-up boxer with a string of KO's under his belt before meeting Pryor. And Arguello was a Contra mercenary for a while, too. I reluctantly thought Arguello would beat the wild man Pryor well known for his self-abusive and wreckless lifestyle. I thought Pryor was going the meet his match in the slick boxing Arguello. And a lot of us were completely surprised.

Still, never study former world champion Aaron Pryor's style if one wants to learn the basics of boxing. You won't learn anything. Most everything he did in the ring should have gotten him knocked on his fanny. He was a great pro fighter, though.

josh

Pryor was great to watch, though. Came out throwing punches from the opening bell and never stopped.

Mr.Tea

Interestingly, both fighters have "First Nations" tattoos. Of course, Brazeau is actually First Nations. Trudeau just looks like an idiot. Like all these trendy white girls with Chinese symbols tattooed on their lower backs that they think mean "peace and love" and actually mean "chicken fried rice".

You're safe. I'm a gentle person now and mostly because I ... couldn't fight my way of a wet paper bag. Smile

He was amazing to watch. Talent galore. Always a danger to opponents, and he was a danger to himself outside the ring.

Buddy Kat

Trudeau kicked Brazeuas ass big time and there were plenty of Tory elite in the crowd and even Harper was said to be watching...Sun news made such a spectacle of them selves ..people were saying ....now we know we need the CBC...levant and Tory's everywhere were gloating bragging and shoving right wing snot down everyones throat at nauseam...with there preamature Brazeaus gonna win theme.

Well wouldn't they be eating crow now ..Trudeau (the lefty) wiped the floor with the tory Brazeau and if the fight wasn't stopped it wouldn't just be blood and loud mouthed ego all over the mat...

Watch the fight ..watch the lefty kick right wing ass.

Fidel

I just watched the first round on Youtube. And I saw Brazeau come straight ahead pretty well and throwing bombs. If he'd have kept that up for three rounds, he should have done well. I see both boxers could improve their footwork. My god, either one of them could have been knocked down in round one the way they were taking backward steps. That's a definite no-no. I can hear our Scottish coach the Y screaming expletives at me even now for doing the same.

If anyone ever wants to get knocked cold, make sure to step backwards while the other guy is lining you up for a right hand. Or straight left if the other person is a south paw. Never backup. Lateral side-to-side, get on your bike, or be throwing punches in bunches.[/Mighty Mick] Laughing

I suppose it's fair to say that Justin is on the left flank of the party, but be careful not to start a riot here by calling Trudeau a lefty ;)

Brazeau is getting his hair cut in the lobby of the House of Commons. He's been a good sport about losing, although he wants a re-match next year. If I was Trudeau, I'd quit while I'm ahead.

Mr.Tea

Trudeau lost his dad to cancer and Brazeau lost his mom to cancer. It was personal for both of them and it was a fun event that raised a lot of money for a good cause. I'm not a fan of either of these guys but they deserve credit for doing this. It took a lot of balls to put their egos on the line like that.

Cancer (and heart disease) have impacted my family as well. Right now my main problem is osteoporisis.

That's just nasty.  The "girls" thing is insulting enough, not to mention sexist -- both men and women sport kanji.  Most research what they mean ... there's an excellent database online that includes some of the more obscure kanji.

And yes, I have several tattoos and one of them is a kanji on the back of my neck.  I did the research before I got it.

Mr.Tea

You're right in that plenty of men have them as well.

But it strikes me as "cultural appropriation" if you're not Chinese (and I'm not so I'll leave it to those who are to speak about how they feel about this).

But, for example, if a non-Jew were to get a Hebrew tattoo (or a Star of David or some other Jewish symbol), I'd find it kind of odd. Just like a First Nations person might find it odd if I (or Justin Trudeau) were to adopt traditional First Nations symbols, a culture of which I (and he) are not a part.

MegB

Okay, if you're keen to adopt the terminology of the progressive ...

Kanji are Chinese in origin, but they are used by the Japanese as well -- there are comparatively few original Japanese kanji.

Some Asian people may feel it is cultural appropriation, and others may feel it is showing respect for a culture.  Regardless, you are not in a position to decide.

As an aside, many Christians choose to wear and tattoo Hebrew symbols -- it denotes an understanding of the mutual roots of Judaism, Christianity and Islam.  Just as many non-Africans use African cultural symbology in their art, even though they do not have African roots more recent than several thousand years.

I'm an artisan, and I use many patterns from various cultures and historical periods to influence my work.  Many symbols are culturally universal.  This is not cultural appropriation -- it is an understanding of our commonality.

Mr.Tea

I guess we'll both agree to leave it to those people in a given culture to determine their reaction to people outside the cultures using their symbols.

flight from kamakura

a few years ago, i wanted to get an aboriginal motif tattoo when i was in the haida gwai, but my gf at the time, this quebecoise, ridiculed me fairly mercilessly for being obvious and absurd.  when i think about it, it's precisely appropriate that trudeau would have such a tattoo.

Uncle John

This is what I saw:

Brazeau set himself up to lose beautifully with the braying braggadaccio. Trudeau was trying to be a nice guy, but Brazeau had to make a point and he decked Trudeau pretty good in the head twice in the first round.

Trudeau admitted that his dad 'taught him boxing'. I can just imagine. So much so that if I just bang my head accidentally I fill with rage.  Trudeau also admitted that he 'saw stars' after those two shots from Brazeau, which Trudeau said were hard.

After that, Trudeau was out for blood. In the 2nd and 3rd rounds it was more animal than MP from Papineau.

This is a story of lack of Canadian parenting skills as anything else.

So in summary: Brazeau hits Trudeau in head. Trudeau gets mad as hell and beats the shit out of Brazeau.

The good thing about this is that the Liberals are likely back in the game again. And more likely at the expense of the Conservatives than anyone else.

Fidel

What I learnt from this circus maximus is that Tories are bums in the ring? I dunno. I guess if it was for a good cause, then maybe we should see more of. I'd like to see Stephen Harper and a Liberal MP in his age and weight class lace-up the gloves for homeless and impoverished Canadians. They should absorb many blows to the head and body for a really good cause. And a rematch if necessary to determine the true champion. I'd stand in line for that.

Boom Boom Boom Boom's picture

What's next, though? MP's mud wrestling for the Heart and Stroke Foundation? MP's kick-boxing for Food Banks?

Bookish Agrarian

I'm holding out for syncronized swimming starring John Baird and Larry Miller in speedos.

By the way I boxed in my youth.  Watching those two try to box was hilarious.  They looked like toddlers.
