"The International Criminal Court (ICC) was a hoax from the start.' So said Michael Mandel, a professer at Osgoode Law School at York University in Toronto, in response to the ICC's shocking decision yesterday to refuse jurisdiction over Gaza war crimes without even referring the matter to judges.

'It's disgraceful but not surprising that the ICC has dismissed Palestine's complaint against Israel. It sat on the complaint for over three years, always proudly announcing that it was investigating it to give the appearance of impartiality. Meanwhile the ICC jumped to attention in less than three weeks when the US government, which is not a signatory to the treaty wanted to go to war with Libya, justifying Western aggression with bogus charges against the Libyan regime.

Ocampo and company have been busy putting Africans on trial for crimes aided, abetted and exploited by the rich countries, while the US government killed hundreds of thousands of Iraqis and tens of thousands of Afghans, and Israel has been committing Nuremberg's 'Supreme International Crime' of aggression against the Palestinians for 45 years.."

"Amnesty International accused the International Criminal Court (ICC) of 'political bias' after it refused to investigate crimes carried out by Israelis during the 2008-9 Gaza War. The court's chief prosecutor on Tuesday rejected a bid by the Palestinian Authority, to clear the way for the permanent war crimes tribunal to investigate the attacks, which left at least 1,300 Palestinians dead.

The UK-based rights group criticized the ruling saying the ICC had risked its independence. 'This dangerous decision opens the ICC to accusations of political bias and is inconsistent with the independence of the ICC. It also breaches the Rome Statute which clearly states that such matters should be considered by the institution's judges,' said Marek Marcynski, head of AI's International Justice campaign."

The ICC was a project of Western NGO's, especially the World Federalists which got an enormous amount of support from many NGOs and Peace groups like Project Ploughshares. The list is very long and you can find it on the Web. "No more impunity" and "No Peace without Justice were the calls. Liberal Western NATO governments joined in and most of the Left supported them. Was this all a hoax? Critics (more on the Right) saw the illegitimate nature of such an ad hoc court with no democratic legislature to legitimize itself. Diana Johnstone, often on Counterpunch and author of Fools' Crusade, Yugoslavia, NATO and Western Delusions (Monthly Review Press - not on the Right) is one of the best critics. Why the continuing support of the ICC by so much of the Left ?
