Hallinan wrote:
Well it doesn't surprise me at all. The original idea of the US going into Afghanistan really didn't have anything to do with 9/11 or for that matter al-Qaeda or the Taliban.

What it had to do with was that the US has always wanted to have a military imprint in Central Asia and obviously Afghanistan is typical for that. Not only does it border Iran and Pakistan, but Central Asia...

And the original plan was to run a gas pipeline from the Caspian Basin across Afghanistan through India and Pakistan. So, I'm not at all surprised that the US has declared that intends to maintain a military presence. Whether they can do so is entirely another matter.

Wait a minute WAIT-A-Minute! 9/11 was the worst attack on America since Pearl Harbor. Pearl Harbor! And the CIA and Pentagon capitalists knew nothing, we repeat, NOTH-ing about it!! It was complete and total SURPRISE attack, as in Jim Naybors "Surprise-surprise Sargent Carter, we got the saaaaame room" kind of surprise. Elvis bin Laden and the CIA's expendible jihadi assets in Afghanistan orchesrated it all. Remember all the good guys from the 1980s and 90s who helped Afghans rid their country of the evol empire? At least, that's what lapdog newz media have repeated constantly for the last ten years. And then they turned on us, like a son goes against the father. 9/11 is now the realm of legend and myth. And we have to fight them on their terrortory so that they don't attack us here at home, like Hitler said just before he ordered the army to be merciful toward civilians in their humanitarian war against Poland. But this is unprecedented for sure.

It's obvious that what Hallinan says and what lapdog newz media say about 9/11 are two very different things. One of them is lying like Joe Goebbels.

Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, Elvis bin Laden, Hamid Karzai, the Khadrs,  Zawahiris, Ali Mohamed, Gulbby Hekmatyar, Rabbini, Moussaoui etc all fought for the CIA in the 1980s and 90s Afghanistan. They were on the side of ordinary humble Afghans against the evol Sovs. Those guys were fighting for freedom and democracy in the Stan.

And then for some strange reason those ruthless motherfuckers transformed themselves into social democrats and decided that to become vigilantes with social consciences in avenging imperialist-infidel oppression of ordinary Palestinians  on that special day on 9/11/01. And what a special day it was. 9/11 was the ultimate surprise attack against the vicious, most high tech empire with the most extensive intelligence network in world history. They were taken by complete surprise on that infamous day.

Never forget.

Questions Mount Over US Account of Massacre  -  by Patrick Martin

"Nearly every fact asserted by US officials in Kabul and Washington has been challenged either by the villagers where the massacre took place, by the Karzai government in Afghanistan, or by those acquainted with the arrested soldier, Staff Sergeant Robert Bates, 38...But the more important warcriminals are those in the White House, [Ottawa], The Pentagon, the CIA and throughout the US political establishment who are responsible for more than ten years of war in Afghanistan, and who are plotting new wars in Syria, Iran and elsewhere."

It may be understandable why the US perceives it in its interest to preserve this imperial power, but it should be equally understandable why its victims react with increasing levels of suspicion, resentment and rage.

Beatings, Sexual Abuse, Electric Shocks: US Torture Camps 'Still Operative'

"A new report reveals that US forces continue to send detainees to prison where torture is practiced, despite NATO's promise to suspend prison transfers last September. The report carried out by the Afghan Independent Rights Commission and the Open Society/ Foundation, documents numerous cases of torture in Afghan detention facilities between Feb 2011 and Jan 2012.

The document has credible evidence in 11 recent cases where practices such as 'beatings, suspension from the ceiling, electric shocks, threatened or actual sexual abuse, and other forms of mental and physical abuse' were commonplace."

A group of Afghan parliamentary investigators has concluded that Bales was part of a group of 15-20 soldiers. As Outlook Afghanistan reported Monday, “The team spent two days in the province, interviewing the bereaved families, tribal elders, survivors and collecting evidences at the site in Panjwai district.” One of the parliamentarians told Pajhwok Afghan News that investigators believed 15 to 20 American soldiers carried out the killings.

“I have encountered almost no Afghan who believes it could have been one person acting alone, whether they think it was a group or people back at the base somehow organizing or facilitating it,” Kate Clark of  the Afghanistan Analysts Network told the Guardian. (The AAN is funded by four Scandanavian governments, all of which have troops in Afghanistan).

After Bradley Manning was arrested on charges that he leaked documents to WikiLeaks, he was held in intense solitary confinement for ten months until political pressure finally forced his transfer to more humane conditions in Fort Leavenworth; the top U.N. torture official last week concluded that Manning’s treatment during those 10 months was “cruel and inhumane.” By stark contrast, Staff Sgt. Robert Bales — the prime suspect in the slaughter of 16 Afghan civilians — is already at Fort Leavenworth and is receiving this treatment:

Quote:
Bales arrived at Fort Leavenworth last Friday and is being held in an isolated cell. He is “already being integrated into the normal pretrial confinement routine,” prison spokeswoman Rebecca Steed said.

The routine includes recreation, meals and cleaning the area where he is living. Steed said once his meetings with his attorneys are complete later in the week, Bales will resume the normal integration process.

An ABC News article back when Manning was transferred to Fort Leavenworth included these details:

Quote:
The 150 inmates at the facility — including eight who are awaiting trial — are allowed three hours of recreation a day, she said, and three meals a day in a dining area.

That likely means that there will be some substantial interaction between Bales and Manning. Think about that: if you expose to the world previously unknown evidence of widespread wanton killing of civilians (as Manning allegedly did), then you will end up in the same place as someone who actually engages in the mass wanton killing of civilians (as Bales allegedly did), except that the one who committed atrocities will receive better treatment than the one who exposed them. That’s a nice reflection of our government’s value system (similar to the way that high government officials who commit egregious crimes are immunized, while those who expose them are aggressively prosecuted). If the chat logs are to be believed, Manning decided to leak those documents because they revealed heinous war crimes that he could no longer in good conscience allow to be concealed, and he will now find himself next to a soldier who is accused of committing heinous war crimes.

I suppose the different pre-trial custody arrangements between the two cases depends on if they consider the crime treasonous to the values they represent.  It's murdered kids vs indiscreet cables and emails.  But Fort Leavenworth is no club med all the same.  If they do it anything similar to the military detention barracks in Edmonton, recreation consists of directed military PT, the kind that if you're not doing it right, you get to practice more, and if you're not coughing up a lung from overexertion, they're not doing it right.  When I was in Ottawa years ago there was this guy who's work earned him a sentence of 90 days, due to some relatively minor but quite willful financial irregularity, while so entrusted.  He went out roughly 270-280 lbs and I didn't recognize him at the coffee circle after he returned, he had lost so much weight.  "Cleaning the area" for him apparently involved endlessly polishing everything in sight to a mirror finish.

I doubt that very much and being in pre-trial confinement and not being convicts I doubt neither one is in the general population.

Fort Leavenworth is as much a maximum security prison as any civilian one and the boyish looking Manning and the child killer Bales would have the same problems in the general population of a military prison as a civilian one. Their recreation is not sitting around shooting pool and watching TV with their buddies; it is more likely to be 3 hours in a 20 foot by 40 foot exercise area by themselves.

I've looked at about a dozen right wing sites this morning to see how they'd react to the news from Afghanistan, and the comments at every single one of them were full of people celebrating the killings, praising the soldier who allegedly committed them, and denying there was any crime, while at the same time frantically trying to blame the crime on President Obama.

....

Since 2001, we've seen the normalization of torture against (mostly Muslim) detainees; the construction of secret prisons to detain Muslim prisoners indefinitely without charges or trial; the routinisation of assassinations and other extrajudicial killings of Muslims in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Yemen; and, most of all, deaths of (by the most conservative reckoning) hundreds of thousands of people, most of them Muslim, in Iraq and Afghanistan and elsewhere.

What attitudes to ordinary Muslims does such a record inculcate? What notions does it foster about the way they should be treated?

Should we really be surprised that, within the semi-anonymity of a blog forum, a large number of Americans discuss Muslims as untermenschen, subhuman enemies of civilisation, fit only for extermination?

Back in 1971, "The battle hymn of Lt. Calley" sold a million copies in less than a week. Its final verse runs like this:

Quote:
When all the wars are over and the battle's finally won
Count me only as a soldier who never left his gun
With the right to serve my country as the only prize I've won ...

More than a decade of the War on Terror has, just as you would expect, created a new audience who wants to never leave the gun, an audience no longer shocked by atrocity but increasingly prepared to celebrate it. The consequences will be with us for a long time.

Afghan shooting: U.S. pays $50,000 per villager killed

REPORTING FROM KABUL, AFGHANISTAN — The U.S. government has paid $50,000 in compensation for each of the Afghan villagers who were killed in a shooting rampage in which an American soldier faces murder charges, Afghan officials said Sunday. Families of the wounded received $11,000 per injured victim.

The sum is unusually large for deaths and injuries attributed to Western troops — a reflection, U.S. officials said, of the scope and significance of the case. The shootings are the most serious alleged war crime by a Western service member to come to light in the course of the 10-year conflict.

The American military did not publicly confirm the sums paid out in the killings in Kandahar province’s Panjwayi district, but a member of the Kandahar provincial council, Agha Lalai Dastgeeri, confirmed the amount of the payments, as did Jaan Agha, a tribal elder in Panjwayi.

U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Robert Bales faces 17 counts of "premeditated" homicide, as well as other charges in connection with the March 11 assault on villagers living close to his base. The count of fatalities by Afghan officials and relatives was 16; the discrepancy has not been explained....

Don't worry, the US Military isn't going anywhere by "2014" nor their obedient colonial troop task force from the North. The CIA and US taxpayers are funding the spread of militant Islam("Al-Qaeda") in Afghanistan as usual and especially into Tajikistan, Uzbekistan etc. Real imperialists don't just pack up and leave as some here would lead us to think. At least not like the multinational Atlantic Alliance achieved in forcing out the Sovs and Soviet-backed Afghan government by 1992. This is the Gladio alliance's last stand in Central Asia, and they don't intend on giving up so easily. Again these are real imperialists doing the occupying this time and not imaginary ones.

The Taliban know that their power is real only so long as they receive US Military and US taxpayer support. Without US and NATO aid their power would be vastly diminished. Meanwhile, several innocent, defenseless inmates have also been taken to an undisclosed location where they are most likely facing torture..

There is well established internationally documented evidence against the Kabul administration's practice of torture in its prisons, especially in Kandahar..which the international community has been informed multiple times. The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan once again strongly condemns the mistreatment of prisoners by the Kabul administration and considers such inhumane actions yet another disgraceful act of the stooge regime.

According to our information, the described situation in Kandahar is still ongoing today and the puppet officals of Kandahar have neither themselves visited the prisons nor have they granted permission to the Red Cross, human rights watchdogs or the media to visit and listen to the prisoners' demands.."

And then at some point NATO can bomb us for our nationalised oil because we would be outside the club de gladio. Eventually.  - NDPP

We're all in it together you know.  There's no choice but to gaze from the inside out, and the outside doesn't exist so long as the market and capitalism exists.  Supporting capitalist parties is no way to change anything from within, wouldn't you agree Fidel?

ETA:  Never mind.  It's already been well established that you don't agree.

Yes, it is true that the NDP is a capitalist party.

I think FPTP says it's wishful thinking. We have to, first and foremost, introduce a small amount of democracy to Canada. Hopefully the NDP can create a modicum of democracy in Ottawa. Hopefully the NDP can introduce a bit of transparency and accountability to the public in Ottawa.

But sitting on the outside looking in will not help countries targeted by the gladio gang. Not at all. That much I do know. We have to spush a Trojan horse through the gates into the city before we can begin sacking Rome, or rather to stand a chance of democratizing club gladio from within. We can't lead a boycott of or protest NATO if we don't actually belong to NATO. If no one follows France's lead, then perhaps they will follow an actual NATO member country's lead in voting against a future NATO military action. And there will be opportunities for an NDP government to break ranks from NATO and create a powerful precedent for other member countries to commit NATO treason.

This is a fight for democracy not sweeping changes to NATO right off the bat. I think Good things take time and effort. I don't expect the NDP to save the world, but we can try to change our corner of it. The struggle for democracy continues. Our only hope is their worst nightmare and vice versa.

Perhaps what we've been missing all along then is the slightest indication that such effort might be forthcoming once all the ducks are aligned.  Our bad for failing to notice.

I think some lefties on this site still believe that right wing extremists in the Taliban are opposed to right wing extremists running NATO. And that's not entirely true. Some of us think in politically conservative terms of black and white. What's happening is nothing like black and white. Not at all. Black and white is what political conservatives pawn-off on their racist and bigoted support base without question. But it's not what anti-war activists should be parroting. It's not antiestablishmentarian to essentially subscribe to the government version of what they say they are striving to achieve in Afghanistan and Central Asia. I think some of us may have seen too many John Wayne cowboys versus Indians movies. Anything more complex than that is unfathomable in their minds.

What the west is pulling in Afghanistan has been done to other countries. There is a history and pattern to it. Patterns and precedents are important to a range of disciplinary studies. And some of us are having none of it. That's not good news for the flagging anti-war movement if we can even call it that at this stage of the great game. It's gotten to a point where if we challenge the US-led NATO monologue on Afghanistan, some lefties wil instantly align themselves with the NATO version of things and declare you a blasphemer. Pretty sad. The "Arab spring" was orchestrated, too. The left is co-opted, and the anti-war movement is sometimes difficult to identify.
