North Carolina voters have approved a constitutional amendment defining marriage solely as a union between a man and a woman, making it the 30th state to adopt such a ban.

With most of the precincts reporting Tuesday, unofficial returns showed the amendment passing with about 61 per cent of the vote to 39 per cent against. North Carolina is the 30th state to adopt such a ban on gay marriage.

Unlikely that an appeal to the tea party, I mean the US Supreme Court, will succeed in striking down these so called 'constitutional' amendments.

Oh don't worry. They aren't actually homophobic.

They are just doing this to prevent white people from being outnumbered:

Mr.Tea

Apparently, North Carolina's John Edwards cheating on his wife while she was dying of breast cancer and then denying paternity of his love child didn't destroy marriage in the state but I guess letting loving gay couples tie the knot would just be too much...

Sure, it's all about protecting marriage, isn't it?

Quote:
Bill James held off an aggressive challenge from Ed Driggs to win the GOP primary for the District 6 seat on the Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners, with the eight-term incumbent commissioner capturing nearly 52 percent of the vote.

But less than eight hours after taking the win in the heavily Republican district, James' attention wasn't focused on his General Election opponent, Democrat Connie Green-Johnson, but on how the results of Tuesday night's Amendment One vote would impact Mecklenburg County employee policy.

The constitutional amendment, which makes marriage between a man and a woman the "only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized" in North Carolina, easily won approval at the polls with a 61 percent margin.

In that light, James is already pushing Mecklenburg to scrap its policy that provides domestic partner health insurance benefits to employees in same-sex relationships. The county has been offering same-sex benefits to employees since commissioners approved the policy in 2009.

James fired off the following email to County Manager Harry Jones and county legal staff early Wednesday morning:

Quote:
Since Amendment One has passed when will we get a memo or something that outlines what changes we need to make to our health plan to be in compliance? I recall when the Democrats on the Commission forced the issue and added these benefits for homosexuals that a number of legal experts said it was illegal then - including the City attorney. Now that Amendment one has passed it obviously is illegal to offer this benefit as there is now only one ‘domestic legal union' recognized in the state.

Prior to the vote most scholars (left and right) said that Amendment One would eliminate local faux ‘marriage' benefits for homosexual employees. I would cite them but you know them all too well.

Still, I would like to know when the Board can expect information on the changes Amendment One wrought (or are we going to break the law and spend scarce resources on litigation we will likely loose)?

A review of the "pro-marriage" argument in NC from The Economist.

ETA: And for the record: I think the thread title "North Carolina affirms marriage as a sacred union between a man and his sister" is much funnier than this thread's title...

bagkitty bagkitty's picture

Well Sven, I wasn't trying to be funny... I was attempting to draw attention to Barber's remarks - not least to draw attention to how false the "black preacher = homophobe" meme is. I found his critique significantly more interesting than the Hallmark moment advertising that characterizes much of the equal marriage chat on the other side of the medicine line.

CF, thanks for making the link more visually compelling.

kropotkin1951

Thx Bagkitty for the link.  His talk was great too bad it didn't sway more voters.

Like he said it was 1875 when they pased the last such amendement in NC.

I don't mean to derail this thread, which I really appreciate. I do mean to derail the privileged, ignorant and abusive notion that incest is funny. To me, it's kind of like laughing at any other rape joke. It is a fine illustration of how rape culture works. Humour often demonstrates who gets to laugh about what. And who gets put down for "not getting the joke" (i.e. who isn't prepared to play the oppressor's game, or doesn't have the privilege of ignorance that allows something horrific to be toyed with and minimized).

Whether you are aware you are doing it or not, you are communicating to a whole host of people that their suffering / history of abuse is something to laugh about.

In their 2001 report on Family Violence in Canada, The Canadian Centre for Justice Statistics found that family members, including relatives, constituted the vast majority (93%) of alleged perpetrators. Another statistical study conducted in 2001 by the Canadian Centre for Justice Statistics found that:

 • among family assaults parents were the perpetrators in 56% of physical assaults against youths and 43% of sexual assaults against youth victims 12 to 17 years of age;
 • siblings were responsible for approximately 25% of physical and 26% of sexual assaults in the family that were perpetrated against youth
 • extended family members committed 8% of physical, and 28% of sexual assaults against youth

Hah hah! Hilarious!

Sorry, writer, but sometimes I forget that many people would like babble to be an irony-free zone (or, as M. Spector more accurately called it, an intentional-irony-free zone)...

Oh, I know that. And I wasn't criticizing you with my comment. It was merely an aside regarding the thread-title "controversy" in the other threa(s).

I actually appreciate all of your postings on this subject.

We are going to have our own vote in Minnesota on this subject in November.  I think it's too early to tell where it will shake out.  But, one thing I am confident of: The trend is very good and opponents of SSM don't have time on their side.

kropotkin1951

Thanks Writer for the statistics.

As always Sven thanks for bringing the piece of shit into this thread.  Scatology seems to be one of your fortes.

Writer: There is a discussion about the thread title you are referencing HERE (the actual thread being referred to was closed by the moderators - although the motivation for closing it seems to be that it was considered a "duplicate" thread rather than it having been flagged as offensive). What I am taking to be the decision on the part of the moderators appears to be contained in post #21 of the thread I have linked to above.

Thanks for acknowledging the potential of derailing this thread (which, by the way, was started before the vote in North Carolina, and was motivated by a desire to draw attention to the argument(s) being used as opposed to the actual result of the vote).

Sven, it isn't ironic when you are triggered. This is a board that aims to make even survivors comfortable, and maybe not think about their brothers' cocks in their mouths, all the while seeing self-regarding fools snigger about it. I do presume you will never, ever understand how you can behave in a way that is respectful, equity driven, and humorous. It is beyond you.

I am sorry for your loss.

Apologies, bagkitty. In a fit of fantasy, I had thought that the other thread had been closed. I am sorry that it was raised here, and followed up by me here. I will take the stink over there.

I watched the video at the OP. Incredible. It moved me to tears.

Well Proposition 8 was overturned in California.

That issue was overturned - twice - by California's Supreme Court.

Now if the U.S. Supreme Court were to rule on it - something that has not happened yet - I believe that ruling would determine the issue in all states.

Lesbian seeking marriage license arrested in NC

... Christine Regan, 35, and Megan Silbert, 34, of Winston-Salem, were rejected for the marriage license while a heterosexual couple a few steps away were receiving theirs.

Nate Bounds, 29, and Alicia Picou, 32, of Winston-Salem said they planned to marry May 19, when his father could arrive from his home overseas.

Picou said she did not object to same-sex couples being allowed to wed.

"Why not? I don't think it's really anybody's business," she said. I don't think it's the government's business to be telling people what to do with their private lives."
