Windsor salt in Pugwash facing closure

Salt plant closure could chop 35 jobs

"Up to 35 jobs are on the line at the Windsor Salt operation in Pugwash as the parent U.S. company reviews its fine-salt plant in Nova Scotia for possible closure."

I've been there before, the plant is massive and I'm sure is the economic heart of Pugwash.

Isn't salt one of the things we're trying to cut down on for health reasons, and taking it off the roads because of corrosion and pollution of nearby water sources?

Isn't salt, like asbestos, an industry that we shouldn't encourage? As for Pugwash (and the asbestos communities in Quebec) governments have resources for job retraining and new industry and resource faciliation.

How DARE you put me in the position of defending salt?

" Salt's ability to preserve food was a foundation of civilization."

" Mahatma Gandhi led at least 100,000 people on the "Dandi March" or "Salt Satyagraha", in which protesters made their own salt from the sea, which was illegal under British rule, as it avoided paying the "salt tax". This civil disobedience inspired millions of common people, and elevated the Indian independence movement from an elitist struggle to a national struggle."

So, to recap, salt was a keystone in early civilization, and, was instrumental in galvanizing Indians to oust the British. Not to mention how many shattered pelvis's and broken wrists it has prevented during our harsh winter months. I daresay salt has saved us billions in health care costs.

Plus, Yum Yum chips. I rest my case.
