Saudi Arabia and Qatar Bankroll Syria Rebels?

http://www.rt.com/news/arab-payroll-syrian-rebels-559/

"Free Syria Army (FSA) militants are about to go on the Saudi payroll, the country's officials shared with the Guardian. Riyadh believes this step will encourage defection within the Syrian military in the latest bid to oust President Assad. Saudi Arabia plans to pay future military deserters in dollars and euros as a counter to the greatly devalued Syrian pound Damascus uses to pay the military.

Ankara also agreed on establishing a Syrian opposition command center in Istanbul to coordinate arms supplies to Syria and maintain contact with scattered opposition groups..."

Syria Puts Double Whammy on Turkey    -   by MK Bhadrakumar

"...even within Turkey, there is skepticism about what really happened. The veteran Turkish editor Yousef Kanli wrote:

'Did the plane violate Syrian airspace?...On the other hand, why was the Turkish reconnaissance plane flying so low, in an area close to a Russian base, and why did it keep going in and out of Syrian airspace so many times in the 15 - minute period before it was downed? Was it testing the air-defense capabilities of Syria (or the Russian base) before an intervention which might come later this year?...."

Details for the actual shot down here...

Quote:

Makdessi pointed out that official correspondence with Turkey on Sunday clarified the details of the incident in response to the Turkish allegations that what happened was a Syrian aggression against Turkey, with the correspondence stating that on 11.40 AM on June 22nd, Syrian radar systems detected a flying object heading towards Syrian territories that performed a left turn towards the northeast and climbed down to a low altitude where it disappeared from the radars, only to appear suddenly at an altitude of 100 meters, 1 to 2 kilometers from the beach and Syrian land, and became suddenly visible to the naked eye.

He added that later, it turned out that the object was an aircraft heading towards the beach and Syrian land at a speed of 700 to 800 kph, which engaged the rules of engagement employed in all sovereign countries, prompting Syrian anti-air defense to engage it.

Makdessi affirmed that the weapon used in repelling this violation of Syrian airspace was anti-aircraft artillery firing 23.57 rounds stationed on Syrian beaches, hitting the aircraft directly, adding that the aircraft was seen heading left afterwards and crashing in Syrian territorial waters.

If it was 23.57mm cannon rounds that brought the jet down then it was well within Syrian air space. The 23mm cannon has a maximum range of about 4,000 meters (again well within Syrian air space) and is fitted on the ZSU 23-4 which is operated by the Syrian army.

Here it is here... it has four 23mm cannons on it and the round thing on top is a fire control radar which would allow it to hit a target like a fast moving low flying jet. You just turn it on and it automaticly aims and shoots at the target, all you do is feed it ammo.

US and Israel to Hold Largest Ever Joint Military Exercise

The first reports I read didn't mention the Russian base location.  If this was not a testing of the Syrian/Russian defense systems it is hard to figure what else it could be.  I expect that an Iranian plane on a training mission that took it into Bahrain airspace close to the US base would have met the same fate.

I feel sorry for the pilots whose lives someone in the command structure gambled with and lost.

Turkey's prime minister, responding to the downing of a Turkish jet by Syrian forces, said Tuesday that Turkish military will respond to any future violation of its border by Syrian military elements.

"The rules of engagement of the Turkish Armed Forces have changed," Recep Tayyip Erdogan said. "Any military element that approaches the Turkish border from Syria by posing a security risk and danger will be regarded as a threat and treated as a military target."

Bec.De.Corbin Bec.De.Corbin's picture

Yes the Russian base was pretty close to where this happened as far as flight time goes. The shoot down was justifyed as far as where the jet was. It's a pity the crew is probably lost and the current state of tention in the region resulted in the Syrian units firing on the jet instead of interseping it or warning it off.

Once again Canada's state media passes off NATO propaganda as news.  There is no nuance or balance to this piece it is straight out NATO spin regurgitated whole.

This piece on the techniques that Hearst and Pulitzer introduced into the American culture is well done.  Analyzing the headlines and imagery in the CBC story through that lens shows how far into yellow journalism and war mongering the CBC has fallen.

In CrossTalk on RT the view was expressed that the shooting down of the Turkish fighter over Syrian airspace was as much political as military. The idea being that the Syrian regime is aware that Turkey is allowing its territory to be used as a staging area for supplying weapons, logistics, etc., for the other side in the civil war .

Fidel

Civil war? Are they only Syrians carrying weapons in Syria today?

Google definition for Civil war: A war between citizens of the same country.

And yet Ayman al-Zawahiri, the newest leader of the fake terrorist group, al-Qa'eda, has called on Muslims around the world to go fight Assad's government troops in Syria.

This is a proxy war, like the CIA's proxy war against the Sovs and Soviet-backed PDPA government in 1980s Afghanistan.

We even have fat-cat Canadian senators referring to it as the new cold war.

kropotkin1951

Sorry Fidel but it is still called the Spanish Civil War despite the support given to the fascist side by Italy and Germany and the brave International Brigades that fought shoulder to shoulder with the people.

i do not doubt that there are foreign fighters in Syria but I also don't doubt that there are many Syrians fighting the brutal regime.  That to me is the very reason that our government should stay out of it.  The Syrian people need peace to have any chance of a transition to a more democratic society.  So far peace has proven illusive in all the countries NATO has intervened in so far in the new millennium and the people of those countries are suffering the consequences of NATO having armed everybody and their brother with an automatic rifle.  There is no normal civil society left in Iraq or Libya and Syria is sinking into the same bottomless pit of violence.  However just because NATO is stirring the pot does not mean the ingredients are all from abroad. Lets not forget that we used to send our citizens to Syria to be tortured.  i am sure a regime like that has lots of internal enemies as well as NATO supported interlopers.

Fidel

It's funny that al-Zawahiri doesn't seem to be interested in striking a single blow of revenge against U.S.-backed torturers in Egypt, his birth country.  It's as if the invisible army of darkness and uncle whiskers share all the same enemies.

The Atlantic Alliance and their Arab imperialist allies are working to essentially undo what Stalinists achieved in the stani nations and Soviet-backed frontline mid east countries, which was to maintain division between mullahs and state power. Imagine that Russia and China had supplied guerilla training and weapons to confederates in the American civil war. Instead of Obama they might have had the klan and scalawags running "the free world" today.

Turkey deployed anti-aircraft guns and other weapons alongside its border with Syria, state television reported on Thursday, days after the downing of a Turkish military jet by Syrian forces heightened the tensions between the two countries.

A small convoy of military trucks, towing anti-aircraft guns, entered into a military outpost in the border village of Guvecci, which faces a Syrian military outpost across the border and where Syrian forces and rebels clashed in recent months, TRT television footage showed.

Several anti-aircraft guns have also been deployed elsewhere alongside the border. Some trucks were seen carrying self-propelled multiple rocket launchers, TRT footage showed.

With the so called civil war in 1980's-90's Afghanistan, the CIA and Brits funded and armed mercenaries from over 40 countries to fight against secularist PDPA government forces.

Surely the confederates were outnumbered by northern Union soldiers. Surely the tables could have been turned on the North had the right incentives been offered to Mexicans and other nationals.

Imagine the Klan and dozens of right wing militia groups running things today as a result. The FBI doesn't like to mention the numerous right wing groups there in the US and readyibng themselves for when the government goes bad. It wouldn't take much to destabilize America today imo.

Wow. What is this, a backdoor opportunity for NATO to start dropping bombs on Syria? I understand Turkey has a right to be pissed IF its` plane was in international waters, but massing troops on the border seems like an overreaction? So what now, a security council resolution to ''help'' our Turkish allies?

Bec.De.Corbin Bec.De.Corbin's picture

I wouldn't put too much into the build up and I think it's more for the Turkish public than anything. There has been some cross fire incidents along their border with each other where Syrian units have fired over into Turkey, probably at fleeing rebels. In the past these incidents were pretty much played down by both sides. I'm assuming Turkey is not going to be so tolerant in the future when such incidents occur. I'm also thinking the Syrians are going to be a little more careful about doing such things seeing how the Turks are now pissed off (at them).

Israel's Stolen Palestinian Oil and Gas Reserves and Plans to Steal Syria's as well - Why We Fight: Canada as Accomplice

Struggle Over the Middle East: Gas Ranks First  - by Imad Fawzi Shueibi

http://www.voltairenet.org/Struggle-over-the-Middle-East-Gas

"...The media and military attack against Syria is directly related to the global competition for energy. It becomes clear that the key to economic success and political domination lies mainly in the control of the energy source of the century: gas. It is because she is at the heart of the most colossal gas reserves in the world that Syria is being targeted.

What we know about this issue is that the Mediterranean basin is the wealthiest in gas and that Syria would be the wealthiest state, according to the Washington Institute. Who controls Syria could control the Middle East, grip on the gateway to Asia, possess the key to Russia's House, as Catherine 2nd put it and could set foot on the Silk Road, according to China.

Most importantly they who could penetrate Syria for gas have the ability to dominate the world...Syria, undoubtedly would be the key to the coming epoch."

Canada Moves To Strengthen Energy Ties with Israel

http://www.cija.ca/jerusalem/canada-moves-to-strengthen-energy-ties-with...

"Canada is looking to strengthen energy ties with Israel in a move that could help the Jewish state alter the balance of oil power in the Middle East. Natural Resources Minister Joe Oliver left for the country on Friday. His trip will be focused on pitching Canada to his counterparts in government, oil company executives and leading academics as an ideal partner to help Israel develop its newly discovered bounty of unconventional oil and gas...

The discovery last year of a field 30 kilometres southwest of Jerusalem estimated by the London-based World Energy Council to contain up to 250 billion barrels of shale oil, together with 16 trillion cubic feet of natural gas found offshore [Gaza!] have suddenly put Israel's name on the energy map. The oil find rivals global oil superpower Saudi Arabia's 260 billion barrels in proven conventional reserves and was publicly dubbed 'the equivalent of Saudi extra-light' by Harold Vinegar, former chief scientist for Royal Dutch Shell.

Bob Schulz, professor of petroleum land management at the University of Calgary's Haskayne School of Business, said the possibility of Canadian technology and investment going to Israel 'would certainly change the political dynamics of the Middle East, in that energy revenue would give it the means to finance much of its own defence instead of continuing to rely on Western support."

As in Libya and the controlled detonation of that country - Canada's involvement in Syria is consistent with our usual role as satan's little helper. As always few get it and even fewer care.

"Creativity is the lifeblood of our organisation." (BBC Mission statement.)

As the sabre rattling towards Iran and the ongoing tragedy in Syria become increasingly hard to unravel, "media errors" or perhaps even "obfuscation" create their own navigational complexities.

One example: on Sunday July 1st, BBC news programmes repeatedly stated that Syrian troops had fired at mourners at a funeral in or near Damascus (i.) Para 4:

"...Meanwhile, activists said a funeral procession in a suburb of Damascus came under mortar attack and 30 people died.

"The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights released amateur video footage claiming to show the explosion in Zamalka, a town 10km (six miles) east of the Syrian capital.

"There has been no independent confirmation of the incident."

However the Los Angeles Times had an entirely different take on exactly the same event (ii.) A car bomb, rather than mortar attacks by Syrian forces, had killed up to eighty five mourners or members of the public:

"The car bomb went off as the procession passed a mosque. Hazy video clouded by dust in the first moments after the explosion showed dozens of mangled bodies lying on the road and the stretcher carrying Halabi's body on the ground nearby.

‘ "I can't describe my feelings, because I am still numb right now given what I saw today," said Abu Omar, whose cousin was killed and father and uncle injured. "No one can withstand what we saw ..." ‘
