Kyle Scanlon has passed away

I didn't know the man much, but he was in my community orbit when I was growing up in Toronto and accessing LGBT services. I thought this would be worth posting here.

The 519 mourns the passing of Kyle Scanlon

July 8, 2012

It is with great sadness that we share news of the passing of Kyle Scanlon, The 519's Education, Training and Research Coordinator.  Kyle committed suicide this week in his Toronto home.

Kyle has worked at The 519 for a decade and during that time helped to redefine the face of trans community services in Toronto and across Canada.  Projects like Trans Access, Trans Pulse and Project Open Door will continue to advance the rights, health and vibrancy of our trans communities and will serve as a legacy of Kyle's commitment and passion.

The entire 519 community mourns the loss of our dear friend and a remarkable community leader. Counselling and support services are being coordinated for staff of The 519 and a book of condolences will be placed in The Centre's lobby for signing beginning on Monday. We have been in touch with Kyle's family and close friends and a community memorial event is being planned. Details will be posted as they become available.

Words cannot express the grief and loss our community is experiencing today. Our thoughts are with Kyle's friends and family as they cope with this difficult news.

I'm so sorry to hear this.  I didn't know Kyle, but my condolences to those who did.

The Sherbourne Health Centre is offering supportive trauma counselling over the next few weeks for anyone in the community affected by the loss of Kyle. Please pass this around and share with friends. Just phone reception to book with an available counsellor 416-324-4100.

I didn't know Kyle Scanlon, but how horrible that he came to the conclusion that life was no longer worth living.  It speaks to how much emotional support the most committed of activists need(not that the rest of us don't, of course, but people like this are sometimes especially at risk because of how deep the emotional and personal investment they have in the causes they devote themselves to).

My condolences to all who knew Kyle.

Indeed - I was just discussing with a friend this week about how people who help others need to find better ways to network together and ensure they are surrounded by supports. You know how pilots will allow other pilots to fly on their planes as a courtesy? Something like that.

All i remember was i went to one of the job interviews and he was one of the interviewers. I am really sorry that he's gone.

These lyrics from Phi Ochs seem appropriate to post here...I think(from what I've read in the few articles I've found online about Kyle)that they speak to what was happening in his mind:

Sometime's I feel that the world isn't mine
It feeds on my hunger and tears on my time
And I'm tired,
Yes, I'm tired
Every face on the street is as cold the air
As hard as the pavement moves 'neath my feet
And I'm tired,
Yes, I'm tired

Sometimes I stop and ask to myself
Oh why should I be so alone
It comes and it goes
and nobody knows
For they're blind with a pain all their own
So I start out again with a smile on my face
To hide all the empty and search for a friend
And I'm tired
Yes, I'm tired
Sometimes I stop and ask to myself
Oh why should I be so alone
It comes and it goes
and nobody knows
For they're blind with a pain all their own
So I start out again with a smile on my face
To hide all the empty and search for a friend
And I'm tired
Yes, I'm tired
And I'm tired
Yes, I'm tired
