Diplomatic Tightrope: US Stepping Up War of Words Over Syria (and vid)

"Hillary Clinton's demand that Russia and China pay the price for 'blockading' the Syrian peace process may lead to more global strife. Will opposition to US policy now equate to supporting tyranny and evil? Experts fear that forming a unity government solely out of opposition members would only escalate violence in the country..

'Since the opposition consists of Sunnis, what we will inevitably see pay out is a  strong reaction, and potentially a massacre of Shiites and Alawites, not to mention the Christian population. So there has to be a solution that involves a power balance,' James Corbett, editor of The Corbett Report, told RT..."

No surprise that the NDP is on board with NATO efforts towards regime change in Syria. During the leadership campaign Mulcair had already signalled NDP support including Canadian Forces action in Syria (air war, navy, etc.).

I think the empire is desperate and ultimately still interested in surrounding Russia and China militarily. We know that's what is behind cutting off Syria from Iran and vice versa. Ultimately it is China and Russia, or control of Asia in their gun sights.

I think that we may be witnessing the last days of the last vicious empire. They couldn't occupy Iraq with help from the British army. They've had to pay Iraqi insurgents not to kill US soldiers. And the gladio gang can't seem to handle a few thousand lightly armed Taliban. And they want to take on Russia and China? It's not on. They've lost credibility since 9/11 but even moreso now with armies unable to win the modern day crusades.  We are witnessing a power shift from what was a unipolar world since 1991 to that of multipolar influences. And I think the NDP realize this is happening, too, and Mulcair especially so. It's better not to antagonize cold warriors at this stage imo. Better that they fade away into obscurity all on their own steam.

I thought it was commies that expected the state to wither away on its own accord?  Interesting new analysis that we just have to wait and it will all get better.

Marx also said to win the battle for democracy. Democracy thrives here on babble with numerous threads on ER and proportional voting, discussions of human rights and so on. And if I were to choose between discussion on gladio and 9/11 and that of PR and ER, I think electoral reform is the most important of all. Fair voting is key to creating a united front on the left.  We can talk about NATO and the new cold war, but in the end it's democracy that scares hell out of them on the right. It's obvious by now that they don't care what a large majority of Canadians think. They only have to cater to their narrow base and phony majorities in safe ridings. For now.

A: Yes, exactly.

Q: And you say these fighters, who you call terrorists killed civilians. This means you are accusing the American government of being at least partly responsible for the killing of innocent Syrian civilians. Is that correct?

A: Of course, exactly. As long as you offer any kind of support to terrorists, you are partners. Whether with armaments, or money or public support, political support - in the United Nations, anywhere, any kind of support it's an implication."

Pepe Escobar on NATO's latest war:

Article says Syria's left parties denounce any form of militarization and totally dismiss the Free Syrian Army. Something Canada's NDP should bear in mind before cheerleading for NATO wars.

Quote:
There will be hell to pay for NATO's Holy War

http://www.atimes.com/atimes/Middle_East/NG10Ak02.html

Washington, London and Paris have tried - twice - to twist the UN Security Council into yet another war. They were blocked by Russia and China. So plan B was to bypass the UN and launch a NATO war. Problem is NATO has no stomach - and no funds - for a very risky war with a country that can actually defend itself.

Thus plan C is to bet on a prolonged civil war, using the Far-from-Free Syrian Army (FSA), crammed with mercenaries and jihadists, and the band of opportunistic exiles known as the Syrian National Council (SNC).

The SNC has actually called for a Libya-style no-fly zone over Syria - shorthand for a NATO war. Turkey also formally asked NATO for a no-fly zone. NATO commanders may be inept - but they have a certain amount of experience with major embarrassment (see Afghanistan). They flatly refused it.

The SNC - and the FSA - could not be more un-representative. The "Friends of Syria" - as in Hillary and the Arab stooges - barely acknowledge the existence of the National Coordination Body for Democratic Change (NCB), the main indigenous opposition movement in Syria, composed of 13 political parties, mostly from the Left, Arab nationalists and including one Kurdish party. The NCB firmly denounces any form of militarization and totally dismisses the FSA.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has agreed on "an approach" to ending the bloodshed in Syria, Kofi Annan, the joint U.N.-Arab League envoy to Syria, said Monday.

While he gave no details, Annan said after meeting with al-Assad in Damascus that he will share the approach with the armed opposition.

Annan also said al-Assad "reassured me of the government's commitment" to Annan's six-point peace plan, brokered in March, which has done nothing to stop the deadly violence.

On Wednesday, Fares, who is now believed to have sought refuge in Qatar, a vocal critic of Assad's government, turned on the regime.

His change of heart however has failed to persuade opponents of the regime and activists.

"I know this man is a criminal," said Rami Abdel Rahman of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights which has tallied the death toll from 16 months of violence at more than 17,000 people.

"It's quite similar to the Manaf Tlass story. If the ambassador defects, he does it because he is greedy for power because Western intelligence agencies are looking for figures who can fit into a transitional phase," Abdel Rahman said.

An activist in the central Syrian city of Hama, who identified himself as Abu Ghazi, shares this view. "People are very wary of the reasons he has defected," he said.

"This defection could be part of a scenario at a time when Russia is starting to slightly shift in its position, and while the international community and the regime are searching for ways to establish a transitional government," Abu Ghazi added.

"We want to live in a democracy, in a state of law and you can't build that with people who have so much blood on their hands and who have been complicit for so long with the regime."

Not so, say supporters of Fares on the website of his Oqaydat tribe.

"He excelled in all his public duties... He honoured his tribe and has become a symbol for Deir Ezzor thanks to his modesty and the love he has for people," wrote one supporter.

Russia Sends Warships Toward Syria

by John Glaser, July 11, 2012

Russia has dispatched eleven warships to the eastern Mediterranean, some of which will dock in Syria, in Moscow’s latest attempt to display Russian power in the region and ward off a Western intervention in Syria.
....
UN envoy Kofi Annan said this month that while Russia has received a lot of criticism for continuing to back the violent President Bashar al-Assad’s regime, “very few things are said about other countries that send arms and money and weigh on the situation on the ground,” without naming any specific countries.

Foreign meddling on behalf of all sides has been instrumental in prolonging the conflict by emboldening both sides and making a political settlement more remote. But now Russia seems to be altering its posture to one of preventing any military intervention against Assad, instead of arming the regime as a proxy client. This position is more amenable to a resolution to the conflict, unlike the position of the US and its allies in arming and aiding the Syrian rebel fighters.

Syria's problem is not the "Free Syrian Army" nor the "Syrian National Council," nor the myriad of terrorist organizations operating under this umbrella - but rather the corporate-financier driven foreign interests that created them, fund them, arm them, and both tactically and politically perpetuate their activities. Syria's problem is that it has attracted the attention of Wall Street and London and found itself in the middle of their geopolitical aspirations for global hegemony.

Pepe Escobar: "Kofi Powers: To the rescue?"

http://www.atimes.com/atimes/Middle_East/NG13Ak01.html

Quote:
Kofi Annan looks increasingly like Austin Powers these days, minus the purple suits; an international man of mystery shuttling between world capitals trying to prevent a vicious war. Dr Evil, of course, is played by Syria's Bashar al-Assad. Swingin', baby!

Annan - How long do you think this crisis will continue?
Assad - As long as the [...] regime funds it.
Annan - Do you think they are behind all the funding?
Assad - They are behind many things that happen in our region. They believe they will be able to lead the whole Arab world today and in the future.
Annan - But it seems to me that they lack the population needed for such an ambition.
(collective laughter)

Not only Annan and Assad, everyone knows that the regime in question is Qatar. And that's why the SNC refused to abide by the ceasefire decided by the previous Annan plan - and will do the same with this one. They know that Qatar - and Saudi Arabia - will keep weaponizing the "rebels", be they defectors, affiliated with the SNC or not, members of different strands of the Not-so-Free Syrian Army, or Salafi-jihadi mercenaries once again gleefully collaborating with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

Annan's so-called six-point plan implies an immediate ceasefire (which won't be respected by the SNC and the FSA); withdrawal of heavy weapons and military forces from villages and cities; access for humanitarian aid and journalists; and the set up of a political transition mechanism.

Syria - Criminal Propagandists Killing Civilians as Part of a 'Humanitarian Mandate'  - by Tony Cartalucci

http://www.globalresearch.ca/index.php?context=va&aid=31897

"UN Blames Regime Forces for Syrian Massacre' (AP), 'Syrian Regime Condemned for Tremseh Massacre'(Reuters), 'Syria Crisis: Tremseh Massacre' (Guardian), and 'Syria Unrest: Kofi Annan Shocked Tremseh 'Atrocities'.

And even below these deceitful titles, clearly implicating the Syrian government and its security forces in what is portrayed as a callous act of mass murder against defenseless civilians, each report concedes, buried toward the end, that Tremseh was in fact the site of a vicious battle between heavily armed NATO-backed 'Free Syrian Army' militants and the Syrian military.

Under the deceitful headlines and beyond the first several paragraphs purposefully loaded with manipulative Goebbelesque propaganda, what the Western corporate-media is actually reporting is terrorist forces being defeated by the Syrian military - in violence growing SOLELY because the West continues to funnel, cash, increasingly advanced arms, and even foreign fighters into the country.

BBC even went as far as literally admitting, after offering up another 'Houla-style' narrative that

'...later activists told the AFP news agency that rebel fighters had attacked an army convoy but were beaten back and many were killed in a counter-attack. "At this stage, though we do not yet have the final count, the number of civilians killed by shelling is not more than seven," said Jaafar, an activist from the anti-regime Sham News Network.

The rest were members of the Free Syrian Army."

There is indeed a grievous threat to world peace. It is not the Syrian  security forces attempting to restore order for the vast majority of its people not engaged in violence and foreign funded subversion. It is the West. It is a deception conducted by foreign powers seeking regional hegemony merely couched within the rhetoric of 'human rights', 'freedom' and 'democracy'. It is an orchestrated deception costing thousands of lives on both sides, and, as seen in Libya, will leave the nation shattered, divided, destitute, and at the complete mercy of the West's corporate-financier interests."

"...Meanwhile, the foreign backed armed gangs have announced that they are adopting a strategy of carrying out assassinations to achieve their objectives. On Friday, a colonel of the self-proclaimed Free Syrian Army set a deadline of July 31 for government figures to defect or face assassination.."

Thierry Meyssan on Aggression Against Syria and Francois Hollande's Diplomacy

http://www.voltairenet.org/Thierry-Meyssan-on-aggression

"...VOR: In your opinion, is there even the slightest chance for the pacification of Syria?

TM: Yes! It is quite simple! If arms and money stopped arriving from abroad..If they stopped sending mercenaries..There are constantly new ones crossing the border from Turkey, as the Russian representative on the Security Council has pointed out. Combatants who were in Libya were transferred to Turkey using UN structures.

They have set up a camp for supposed refugees, which is in fact a rear base for the so-called Free Syrian Army. And constantly these people cross the border to commit crimes on Syrian territory. So, if outside support for armed gangs were to stop, there would be nothing left! After that we would have a normal situation with a government that has the support of the majority, an opposition working, that proposes new things etc. There would be a democratic debate as exists in many countries.

Now when the contact group initiated by Russia meets, the question is will the US, which is the power holder for the West and for the Gulf Cooperation Council, ask their allies to stop this under-handed play? Or will they on the contrary continue to encourage them to throw oil on the fire?"

Yes whatever Qatari royals and their pro imperialist newz propaganda sources say goes, I guess. Keep in mind, though, that Qatar is an absolute monarchy backed by the Gladio Gang.  This is in stark contrast with the fact that rabble/babble is a socially progressive anti-imperialist forum.

I don't believe any of us are apologists for the Assad government. It really does not matter what we think as most Syrians support Assad and are against foreign military intervention. I think the Atlantic Alliance countries should respect Syria's sovereignty and cease with aiding and abetting covert terrorism perpetrated against Syrians today.

ETA: What the Reaganauts through to Obama have pulled in Afghanistan, Iraq and Libya has not produced democratic results. Just the opposite is true in all those countries today. The US Military and its allies have bombed dozens of countries and overthrown numerous foreign governments since WW II. The question begs answering: Which of them is more democratic for it today?

"I think people of the US and around the world agree with my people that democracy never comes by occupation. Democracy never comes by military invasion. Democracy never comes by cluster bombs, by white phosphorus, by massacre, by bombing out wedding parties,"

And I think none of us believes that democracy can be the end product of foreign funded terrorism. None.

Some apparently do: Rabble.ca has posted prominently in their newswire a Guardian story which advises 'Assad's Forces Shot Anything Moving', as their little bit to assist manufacture of consent for 'humanitarian intervention' apparently. Would this be the work of the same guy that invited pro NATO-RAT speakers at Vancouver 'anti-war' demos?
