There are endless scorecards and counter-scorecards of who did what to whom in Syria when there are limited facts and information coming out.
It would be comical were it not for the deadly fallout and the loathsome spectacle of cheerleaders for violence.

What should be abundantly clear is the preponderance of information and disinformation promoted in the West is designed bring on yet another self-serving regime change justified by the "humanitarian" introduction of more weaponry, and the justification of phoney "humanitarian intervention".
Western media and governments for the most part are an uncritical echo chamber in a closed loop for interventionist agitating shadowy "sources".

Standard propaganda practice is to plant the desired slanted "outrages" in the public mind (repeated in the posts of the complicitous and dupes) and, when the story is modified by unsolicited reality--plant those unwanted details on page 99.

The first stories are the ones that will stick in the managed minds of the public.

Thus, from the New York Times article above:

Quote:
Massacre Reported in Syria as Security Council Meets
By RICK GLADSTONE and NEIL MacFARQUHAR
Published: July 12, 2012

Syrian opposition activists said more than 200 people were killed in a Sunni village on Thursday by government forces using tanks and helicopters, which, if confirmed, would be the worst in a series of massacres that have convulsed Syria’s increasingly sectarian uprising against President Bashar al-Assad....

Now, several days later we have, also from the NYT, the other shoe softly drops :

Quote:
Details of a Battle Challenge Reports of a Syrian Massacre

Although what actually happened in Tremseh remains murky, the evidence available suggested that events on Thursday more closely followed the Syrian government account. But Syrian officials colored that account with their usual terminology of blaming “foreign terrorist gangs” for all violence. The government said the Syrian Army had inflicted “heavy losses” on the “terrorists.” ....

Engineering Consent For An Attack On Syria Syrian "Civilian Massacre" Story Falls Apart

Alex Newman wrote:
July 14, 2012 "Information Clearing House" -- Yet another alleged "massacre" of "civilians" by the Syrian regime was in the establishment-press headlines this week, supposedly a brutal killing spree by dictator Bashar al-Assad's forces in the village of Tremseh that left up to 250 people dead. As has become typical, Western governments and mainstream media outlets - the New York Times, the BBC, and others included - parroted anonymous "opposition activists" for the claims. But within days, after foreign powers seeking regime change had their chance to beat the war drums even louder, the carefully constructed tale was already falling apart.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, one of the top defenders of the dangerous "rebel" coalition operating in Syria at American taxpayer expense, immediately claimed there was "indisputable evidence that the regime deliberately murdered innocent civilians" - "over 200 men, women and children," in fact. She did not present or cite any of the alleged evidence, but vowed to punish those responsible amid more calls for immediate regime change. Other Western leaders and financiers of the violence in Syria issued similar condemnations and more threats.

Gladio Gang and their Goebbelsesque pro war propaganda machine lying to the public. Again! They dream of war. It's what they do.

Still uncritically reposting Western propaganda?

I guess it saves ever having to defend your own position.

So let's actually look at how this story operates.

This is the same event I commented on above in post #56 as an example of how propaganda works--only this story is more pernicious.
The general propaganda mechanisms described in that post also obtain with the CBC piece (actually an AP story), but with significant differences.

This is essentially the CBC/AP's  minimalist accommodation/suppression of the UN's findings as revealed by the NYT story:

Quote:

Details of a Battle Challenge Reports of a Syrian Massacre
...Although what actually happened in Tremseh remains murky, the evidence available suggested that events on Thursday more closely followed the Syrian government account...

Thus, The CBC/AP story now has less obvious interventionist outrage to stir up--yet it manages to do so anyway while it provides links back to:

Quote:

Syrian violence continues
Tremseh massacre possibly the bloodiest attack yet on Syrian protester
s

http://www.cbc.ca/news/world/photos/2745/#igImgId_45462

Additionally, the CBC dutifully regurgitated the patently deceitful AP story:

Quote:
UN blames Syrian massacre on regime forces
Scores of people killed in impoverished village of Tremseh

The Associated Press
Posted: Jul 13, 2012 6:04 AM ET
Last Updated: Jul 13, 2012 8:00 PM ET

The UN singled out government forces Friday for blame in the latest massacre in Syria, a frenzy of killing that raises new questions about whether diplomacy has any chance to end the crisis more than 16 months into the bloodiest revolt of the Arab Spring.

http://www.cbc.ca/news/world/story/2012/07/13/syria-shelling-tremseh.html

Now, back the story in question now and how it handles unwanted revelations.

Because the "massacre" deception has been discredited, this story modifies the angle of attack, that is, highlighting the deceit of the brutal Assad regime:

Quote:
Syria on Sunday denied United Nations claims that government forces used heavy weapons during a military operation that left scores dead and brought immediate international condemnation, while the International Committee of the Red Cross said it now considers the conflict in the country a civil war.

Syrian Foreign Ministry spokesman Jihad Makdissi said the violence Thursday was not a massacre — as activists and many foreign leaders have asserted — but a military operation targeting armed fighters who had taken control of the village of Tremseh....

The first 2 paragraphs consciously and deceitfully conflates two different issues in order to supress the UN findings it buries later in the story:

The first paragraph starts off with true claim that the Assad regime's propaganda on "heavy weapons" is a lie--(of course heavy weapons were used--they had them). No surprise here, the nasty regime, and favorite destination for US rendition torture victims (eg Maher Arar) can hardly be depended on to tell the truth on anything (for that matter, what country involved in a war can?).

Now that the stories theme of Assad deceit is established, it carries over to the second paragraph where it is the deceitful regime (not the UN fact finding mission) which now claims it was not a massacre.

When the propaganda piece finally, vaguely, does get around to mentioning the discredited massacre story, it is given a different spin:

Quote:
Some of the emerging details suggested that, rather than the outright shelling of civilians that the opposition has depicted, the violence in Tremseh may have been a lopsided fight between the army pursuing the opposition and activists and locals trying to defend the village....

I suppose calling rebel combatants, "activists" is major concession over the CBC/AP's previous reference to them as "protesters".

Canada Swooped in to Freeze Billions in Arab Spring Assets: RCMP Documents  -  by Jim Bronskill

http://news.nationalpost.com/2012/07/15/canada-swooped-in-to-freeze-bill...

"Canadian authorities red-pencilled almost $4.3 Billion in suspect assets belonging to dictators, allegedly corrupt officials, and others in response to the Arab Spring uprisings, newly disclosed documents say. An RCMP briefing note says the national police force's federal policy branch worked with the Foreign Affairs Department, Public Safety, security intelligence agencies and Canadian banks to 'identify and freeze' the assets.

The note, obtained by The Canadian Press under the Access to Information Act, paints a picture of the extent to which Canadian officials toiled behind the scenes to drain the financial lifeblood of Arab dictatorships. The agencies relied on an array of sanctions, and legislative tools to freeze money and property linked to regimes that toppled in Egypt, Libya and Tunisia, as well as Syria, whose leadership has so far withstood intense pressure from opponents..."

And we know just how politically 'neutral' the Red Cross can be. ICRC was notorious for handing out relief supplies to the other side  when the U.S.-backed Thai Army were trying to install Pol Pot in Phnom Penh. That is a pretty strange claim about claims.

"Most" claim what? Perhaps you could add them up.

It's pretty obvious that there are mainly anti-Assad SYRIAN fighters(with various agenda's) , as there would be in any rebelion against any oppressive regime in the ME--including the oppressive states supported by the West.

It's also clear (not a "claim by most people here") that there are many outside fighters (as well as arms, ied's, etc channeled by the West) flowing into Syria. You don't need to go to a leftist board to find that out for yourself.

I don't know... there's only one person here posting stuff saying it's a civil war and he's being attacked for spreading western propaganda. Most all the other articles posted here tend to insist this is all a western ploy using a proxy army of CIA terrorists forcing revolution on the Syrians. But still, even then, unless the majority of the people support the rebels they can never win no matter what kind of support they get from the west or east or south.

For example: the government forces have the rebels, whom were attacking the capital these past few days, surrounded in the city, If the rebels have the support of the population there they will be able to slip away into the population. If they don't then they will have to fight their way out because people will point them out if they try and blend with the population. So I'm interested in seeing what happens over the next 24 hours in the capital. This could be a good indication as the the direction the situation in Syria is going to go.

Only time will tell if Assad is really doomed or not.

Tall Tales in Tremseh  -  by Justin Raimondo

"Another day, another Syria atrocity. The propaganda of the rebels, freely broadcast by the US government and its allies, seeks to depict every act of self-defence on the part of the regime as an atrocity. The Syrian 'crisis' - one brought on by the Western powers and their sock-puppets in Qatar and Saudi Arabia - is but a prelude to the main event: the strangulation of Iran, via economic blockade and all-out war.

What is happening in Syria today reflects, in minature, the regime-change crowd's plan for the entire region: unleashing Sunni fanatics in a religious war against all other sects, one that will liquidate the Christians and other minority communities. Expect the Syrian war to escalate - in which case the prospects for war with Iran by election day, November 2012 are a good bet."

"Washington's dirty hands are all over Wednesday's attack. Death squad diplomacy is prioritized. Hillary Clinton warned about a price to be paid. Turning Syria into a charnel house is planned. Washington and regional states already supply weapons, other equipment, funding, training and direction. Expect stepped up efforts ahead. Expect daily bloodshed to continue. There's nothing civil about Washington's war on Syria..."

despite the cheerleading above for the Assad clan,

they are going down to the popular rebellion, probably by September, at this rate:

http://www.aljazeera.com/news/middleeast/2012/07/201272118545239117.html

Al Jazeera's Andrew Simmons, reporting from Cilvegozu on the Turkish side of the frontier, said the FSA had established a proper checkpoint, controlling any traffic coming through.

"The Free Syrian Army is in control of the first part of the main road into Syria but the regular Syrian army has some sort of base a few kilometres down the road," he said. "We spoke to Syrians who've been fleeing. They say they passed through two separate control points, one manned by the regular army and one by the FSA."

Simmons said the border was not officially closed, but officials were "discouraging everyone" from crossing. He added that Turks were being turned away from the border, although some Syrian refugees had made it across.

South of Syria, our correspondent Stefanie Dekker, reporting from Ramtha, Jordan, said that the Free Syrian Army also attempted to take control of the Nasib border crossing, but were repelled back by government forces.

There appears to be a major realignment going on in the Middle East.

And good riddance to the Assads who are nothing but monsters.

The battle for Syria is a battle for the entire Middle East

If Assad falls, the area will lose a brutal dictator and Iran a pivotal ally. It could mark the end of an entire political culture

Yes the only secular states in the area are disappearing and the evil culture they promoted. Good riddance and bring on more religious based nations. A constitution like we gave Afghanistan will really help the people of Syria especially the women who will be given the same rights as their counterparts in Saudi Arabia. Maybe they could do like Israel and have laws for citizens who were born into the Islamic faith that are different than for other religions.  That would be a major change in their political culture and more in line with the GOOD countries in the area. Or maybe we can find an old family royalty somewhere to reinstall so they could become like Iran under the Shah, now that was a great country.

Imperialists funding and arming terrorists in Syria should be encouraged by this news report:

Quote:
Syrian rebels have claimed control of a third border crossing with Turkey.

But as amateur video looked to show them celebrating their capture of the Bab al-Salam crossing, reports emerged that al Qaeda militants may increasingly be joining their ranks.

Viva al Gladio!! Viva al CIA'duh!

Never forget.

The writing is on the wall. You just have to look at Bosnia, Chechnya, Afghanistan, Libya and Iraq to know what will become of Syria. Syria will become a base for militant Islam and al CIA'duh terrorists. It's not rocket science.

Syria after President Assad

All observers accept that the regime will fall. But do Syria's neighbours have the power to create a stable united nation?

Any names for the "cheerleaders of the Assad clan"?

One of the few to cheer for brutal thugocracies is you --so long as they are installed by imperial intervention.

Allies once again... no doubt in the interest of "freedom". All the useful idiots of "humanitarian intervention" can once again be proud:

Islamic fighters flocking to Syria

In the 1980s, it was Afghanistan to which international Islamic fighters came, helping the mujahedeen successfully take on the Soviet army and its puppet regime in Kabul. Then came Bosnia in the 1990s and Iraq in the 2000s, in both of which veteran jihadists fought a sectarian war on behalf of outgunned Sunni minorities. In 2012, they’re flocking to Syria....

Stymied at U.N., U.S. Refines Plan to Remove Assad

WASHINGTON — The Obama administration has for now abandoned efforts for a diplomatic settlement to the conflict in Syria, and instead it is increasing aid to the rebels and redoubling efforts to rally a coalition of like-minded countries to forcibly bring down the government of President Bashar al-Assad, American officials say....

Where has the U.S. military and CIA ever created a stable and united country?

Afghanistan, Pakistan, Bosnia, Libya, Israel, Palestine, and Iraq stable and united countries?

If the actual U.S. record for destabilizing countries is used as a template for Syria, then you can expect Syria to descend into chaos. That is what the U.S. Government has perpetrated around the world since the 1950's. Destabilization is what they do. While Stalinists worked to separate influence of the mullahs from state power in spice route and stani nations, the CIA and Brits have aided and abetted right wing religious fundamentalists in Central Asia, the "Middle East", and now North Africa. The Gladio nations have been working to destroy secular socialist thought in Asia and Middle East, North Africa etc. This is now part of the historical record. No need to defer to Guardian writers because the writing is on the wall.

Imperialism does not work in united and stable countries. With imperialism the barbarians must be divided and conquered and chaos reigned in. It's what they, the imperialists, are doing in Central Asia since the 1980's, and in Africa and the Middle East today. Where imperialists are concerned, socialist, nationalist, and sovereignty in general represent threats to the freedom of corporations to plunder and corrupt.

Yea, Syria has been such a paradise for its people under the Assads, eh!

Thank goodness for democracies such as the USA and Israel who hopefully can keep the chemical weapons out of the crazies' hands.

Where is it again that Assad has hidden his money that he stole from his people? How much has he stolen? A billion? More than that?

What wonderful countries are hiding the Assads' ill-gotten gains?

Let us guess. You sprained your ankle and lay in bed for days and couldn't reach the remote to change channels. And you had no alternative but to listen to CNN and Fox and al Jazeera reports with the volume turned up for hours at a time?

Yeah, like Vietnam through to Fallujah.

And I'm afraid the crazies are working to develop the most deadly chemical and biological weapons of mass destruction ever conceived in public-private partnerships between academia and military contractors in the state of California today.

If you had a list of the brutal dictators and U.S.-backed war criminals who fled their countries with national booty and welcomed with open arms in the USA, you might be amazed and embarrassed at the same time. Quite a few of them have livied the good life right there in the USA. If they were very concerned about terrorism, the CIA and Brits would storm the beaches of Florida and take out a few of their former partners in crime.

Chemical weapons, how 1990 of you.  Assad the British trained mad eye doctor. He has been stockpiling weapons of mass destruction since he took power.

Speaking of Iraq what do you think of what has happened to it since then?  Do you really think that the disaster visited upon the Iraq people and their society was somehow a positive historical event?  How can murder on such a scale ever be justified.  Better to kill a million innocents than to have a non NATO aligned dictator kill even a thousand of their own people.
