Bob Welch, a former member of Fleetwood Mac who went on to write songs and record several hits during a solo career, died Thursday of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said. He was 65.

Police spokesman Don Aaron said Welch's wife found him with a chest wound at their south Nashville home around 12:15 p.m.

The woman who gave birth to the world's first test tube baby has died.

Lesley Brown, 64, who lived in Whitchurch, Bristol, made history in July 1978 when her daughter Louise was born at Oldham General Hospital.

Mrs Brown had been trying for a baby with her husband John for nine years before she became the first woman to give birth following IVF treatment.

She died at the Bristol Royal Infirmary on 6 June with her family by her side, it has been announced.

Oh no, laine, that's a bolt out of nowhere! So sad to hear. I see Counterpunch will be publishing tributes as well as some posthumous books and memoirs.

A massive loss.  I had the chance to see him speak in Olympia, Washington, last fall(he was doing a speaking tour)but passed it up due to a family engagement.  If I'd known he was that sick, I'd have ditched the relatives and gone anyway.

Well the MSM didn't pick up on this :-(

Scott McKenzie, who sang the 1960s hit San Francisco (Be Sure To Wear Flowers In Your Hair), has died aged 73.

The singer was a close friend of Mamas and Papas star John Phillips, who wrote and produced the San Francisco track.

Released in May 1967, it became a global hit and an anthem for the 1960s counterculture movement.

Although I didn't and still don't agree with everything in The Dialectic of Sex, it was a brilliant and bold synthesis.

What a terribly sad death. I'm so very sad to hear that nothing more could be done to help her.

Ken Burch

Agreed.  We need to find ways to avoid having anyone feel that isolated, that certain that no one out there cares about them or is on their side.

Neil R. Smith, 1954 - 2012

Forward from CUNY:

Center for Place, Culture and Politics

It is with incredible sorrow that I write to share the news that we lost Neil
Smith in the early hours of this morning. He had been hospitalized on Wednesday
afternoon with organ failures, and despite some moments of hope, could not
greet another day with us. Words cannot describe this sudden tragedy. Neil was
larger than life, brilliant, an inspiration and loved by so many.

I will provide the CPCP community with further updates as they are available.
You can still share your thoughts at

Singer Andy Williams died this week - I think he was married to Claudine Longet. A relative of mine loved his music, which made it easy for me to shop for Chritsmas presents - I just gave him Andy William's latest LP every year. Smile

True. This is a family that has experienced a great deal of tragedy.

Patty Park.

Quote:
An activist and advocate all her life, Patty started at the Toronto social planning council, OFL human rights committee, and Toronto Labour Council coop housing. Over the years she worked for the John Howard Society in Winnipeg and Elizabeth Fry in Ottawa. She spent five years in the U.S., first as administrative assistant to Cesar Chavez in California, and then as director of the Farmworkers grape boycott in Detroit.

Patty was an organizer, director of organization ONDP, fund raiser, and managed campaigns for Ed Broadbent, Bob Rae and Bill Blaikie and many others. She served as executive assistant to Manitoba energy minister Wilson Parasiuk and was director of caucus services for the Ontario NDP government.

The last 12 years of her working life was as executive director of Three Oaks women's shelter in Belleville.

Instead of a funeral there will be an Irish style celebration of a life well lived on 6 October at Cold Springs Memorial Hall, north of Cobourg, 2 pm.

The number of celebrants was outstanding. Everyone from Jack Murray and Michael Lewis and Gerry Caplan to David Warner, and many dozens of others I should name.

(Patty's father Eamon Park was MPP for Dovercourt 1948-1951.)

Underground cartoonist Spain Rodriguez, age 72:

(Given the sexual politics in his work I'm sure this news will produce mixed feelings here, to say the least).

lagatta

Well, I have VERY mixed feelings about Spain. His art (at least his early art) was often violently misogynistic and used women as things, but it also had a raw working-class radical energy that I really appreciated. He was fearless in his commitment to class war. I don't know whether his attitude towards women evolved in later years, as I only remember his stuff from the late 1960s-1970s.
