Generally, it looks good, and the Search feature is finally up to speed, but I'm still not getting PM notifications. The best upgrade is to Rabble Features, which I think is spectacular. Smile

ETA: It'd really make my day if someone could change "Save" to "Post" in the Comment section. Innocent

Boom Boom Boom Boom's picture

I'm still occasionally getting this message:

Agree with Boom Boom, the uprgrade to the Rabble Features looks great. Also really like being able to paste text and links into my posts without having to use the "Paste Text" box, and not having the line spacing get screwed up when I paste text.

Still don't see any sign of the 'keep me logged in' button. Grrrrr!

Catchfire Catchfire's picture

LT, fyi on the "keep me logged in," it's been temporarily disabled for consistency while the upgrade, er, expresses itself. It will make a reappearance later. Sorry for the inconvenience!

Caissa

"upgrade," my arse.

6079_Smith_W

My guess is that I'm not the only person who got a poorly-worded  personal message last night with no point other than to insult, since the sender seems to be gone.

Just noticed there isn't any button to flag that sort of thing as offensive.

Not complaining, since it is easy enough to drop a line. But it is just the first time I noticed.

Slumberjack

Well I'm feeling left out now.  No insulting PMs lately at least.

Boom Boom Boom Boom's picture

Those insulting PMs should be reported to the Mods.

6079_Smith_W

Yes. My guess is that someone already has, since the person is gone. But just in case, I figured a mention here would take care of it, and kill two birds by pointing out that there is no offensive message option.

Caissa

Pages are still taking an inordinant amount of time to load.

6079_Smith_W

Also, there was no notice at all that there was anything in my inbox - not on the main page, nor even on my home page. I just happened to open it on a hunch. If this is the same for everyone any of you might have messages waiting that you don't know about.

Perhaps you did get lucky, SJ.

Catchfire Catchfire's picture

Anyone who received an abusive email or private message from a new babbler which included very violent imagery should contact Rebecca or me immediately. Include a copy of the text as well as the headers from the email. Thanks!

NDPP

The removal of the email/forward function from the articles and blog pieces on the Rabble frontpage should be put back. It is good for the pieces and Rabble that these pieces are forwarded. Please put it back OK?

Very much agree. Bring back the Share button.

I occasionally now - used to be all the time with the upgrade -  get this message when I post (and the page goes to full black):

The page you requested is temporarily unavailable.

We're redirecting you to the homepage in 5 seconds.

(Error 503 Service Unavailable)

I hit 'refresh' then the post goes through.

FWIW, Facebook is buggy/slow  on dial-up, too.

Brutally slow actually.  I will give you the benifit of the doubt and just guess that Harper has a team of  Denial of Service servers  trained against your good people.

Unusably slow in my opinion.  (I am on high speed), gawd help anyone on a phone connection.  Open new rabble pages or new discussions in a new tab every time and you might have a chance. Open 5 at a time and maybe the 1st one will be loaded by the time you get back to look at it. (if you are lucky).  These days, nobody bothers with slow sites so fix it quick or disappear altogether.

And while techies are fielding requests, I'd like to put in for a sex button. The font should be size 11, wing dings or Times New Bohemian and step on it.

I just thought it wouldn't hurt to ask. You never know because they can do some amazing things these days.

Caissa

Any estimate when it will cease being slow? I find it excruciating to hang out here these days.

Sarann

Would it be possible to have the most recent posts at the top as the defaut.  Sometimes the button that should do that doesn't seem to work.

Unionist

You can say that again!

This morning I'm getting this message:

Validation error, please try again. If this error persists, please contact the site administrator.

I opened a new window, loaded babble, and was able to post again.

Caissa

Yeah, I got one as well. Upgrade my expletive, expletive.

Comment viewing options - very impressive! Good work, techies. Smile

The retro look and feel of a 28.8 kbs modem over dial-up was a nice touch.  It's like a shout-out and a nod to all the netroots of the past you know.

I just got that tonight for some reason.

On the far right hand side of TAT, the numbers (in red) for new comments are grossly inflated, at least on my computer. I went to the "Big Food" thread expecting to see the 18 new posts I saw on TAT, and there were no new posts at all. Babble seems a little wonky tonight.

NDPP

Here's another big problem. Please do NOT put pageination on Syria 9 when we are already into Syria 10. If you do this to each of the multiple threads in a sequence, you stand to have each and every one of them opened up again. Get it? Thanks. I would be happy to demonstrate if this isn't clear...?

nicky

On those topics that extend over multiple pages it is the first page and not the last which comes up initially. In order to get to the most current posts we have to scroll down to the bottom of the first page and click "last".

I find this mildly irritatting and hope it can be fixed.

Caissa

You just need to change the number of comments you want on each page. One simple click.

nicky

thanks Caissa

I don't really understand this, but I can't choose which threads are paginated and which aren't. It's all or nothing. Is Syria 9 still open? If so, I'll close it and we shall nominate Syria 10 to be our Syria thread for perpetuity. Will that please the court?

I agree that this is irritating. We hope to have the "go to new" button fixed so that it will jump to the relevant page soon. I understand our tech gods are working on a number of solutions to this prickle.

None of the old locked threads have been reopened, so there should be no problem.

Overall the upgrade ain't perfect yet, but you're getting there. Keep trying. The "New Comments" in red at the far right needs a fix - it's showing the number of the last post on this page as the number of new comments.

Boom Boom Boom Boom's picture

This is what TAT shows on my computer right now:

Forum             Title                    Comment author Date:                       Comment count           New

body and soul  Sex and Love in Retirement   Fidel   Aug 17 2012 - 3:56am        3                  3

québec          quebec election - 04.09.2012   DaveW Aug 17 2012 - 3:51am      150           150

.......still a few bugs in the system?   ("Comment Count" is same as "New")

Boom Boom Boom Boom's picture

Anyone else having a problem with that "New" column at the far right? It's really misleading on my computer - is never right.

Unionist

Yup, Boom Boom, it's flaky. Sometimes it shows the right number of new posts, sometimes it resets to show all the posts as new, and sometimes... well, it's flaky.

Boom Boom Boom Boom's picture

Do we have an estimated day, week, month, year, or decade when this upgrade will be completed?  It's also very slow to load today.

Left Turn Left Turn's picture

Boom Boom, which web browser do you use? I use Firefox, and I've not had any problems with the site not displaying properly. However, different browsers interpret the html/xtml code a bit differently, so what displays properly in Firefox may not in some other browsers. I understand that Internet Explorer (IE) is more finicky in this regard than other browsers, and if the techies don't incorporate accomodation of IE in their design it can cause problems.

Boom Boom Boom Boom's picture

IE8 - and I'm on a slow dialup. I tried loading Firefox and something else, but it caused my computer (2007 Dell 1525 with WinVista)  to just shut down.

Catchfire Catchfire's picture

I admit that I use Chrome or Firefox and I have occasionally had the pages display improperly. That shouldn't happen anymore, but it may occasionally.

I'm afraid that the performance level of the site is about as good as it will be for awhile. There's a lot of work to be done until the techs can look at performance again.

Boom Boom Boom Boom's picture

I'm okay with the site being a bit wonky now that I know it's my browser causing my problems. I get reminders to upgrade to IE9, and I did once - but it looked horrible so I went back to IE8.

Question - anyone using IE9? Hows the site working for you?

Brian White

Still INCREDIBLY SLOW. What the hell type of server are you using?  I have firefox and shaw and nothing else compares to this.  Have you a reason why your site takes about 3 minutes to load?  This didn't even happen in 2000 when I first got internet. YES people, that is how BRUTAL your service is now.

I cannot believe that A. You have not responded to the complaints

and B. You have not fixed it.

Have you died? Babble?     I am on high speed by the way. I suspect that your tech people are doing a number on you. Have you concidered that posibility? I am pretty sure any site from Albania will load quicker than yours.

Boom Boom Boom Boom's picture

Wow, Brian. Can't believe you're on high speed, using Firefox, and you have the same problems I have on slow dialup. Frown

Brian White

Hi, boom Boom, it is unbelievable.  I just clicked on http://rabble.ca/babble and it took 26 long fucking seconds before it came through.  SeriouslY.  That is worse than when I was on dialup on a bad day!  And it ONLY happens with Babble. Everything else (every other site) is working great.  Really, guys, you have either hired the cable guy from the movie or you have seriously pissed off the harper god of the internet.

I cannot believe that it is still not fixed. Did you hire a complete fucking idiot to do your tech work?

If you are still alive, maybe it is time to get somebody else to do the tech work?

Left Turn Left Turn's picture

There's also a big discrepancy between how long it takes babble to load vs. the rabble homepage.

Just now, http://rabble.ca took 2.5 seconds to load, while http://rabble.ca/babble took about 30 seconds.

Oh, and for interests sake I googled the Government of Albania site, it loaded in 1.4 seconds http://www.km.gov.al/?gj=gj2
