Two onslaughts in two of the cities that witnessed the historic drama of the Arab spring last year do not an Islamist winter make. But both underline the glowering and dangerous presence of the sort of radical Muslim fundamentalists whom the old regimes kept at bay or in prison and who are now free to pursue their agendas. Gaddafi and Mubarak may have been unreconstructed dictators, but by and large they did Washington's bidding. And US diplomats were usually safe.
Libya is the more disturbing case. On a day when Gaddafi's democratically elected heirs were due to announce a new prime minister, it will be infuriating to have global attention diverted to the Salafi extremists of Ansar al-Sharia who attacked the Benghazi consulate with rocket-propelled grenades – and killed an American official who was instrumental in helping overthrow the man who ruled unchallenged for 42 years. It will also highlight the grave problem of security as the authorities in Tripoli struggle to create a functioning national police force and control militia weapons.
Conspiracy theories are two a penny in the Middle East, but it was surely no coincidence that both incidents took place on 11 September – a date that will be associated with the notion of an inevitable "clash of civilizations" long after both Osama bin Laden and George W Bush are gone.

What goes around comes around. I will note that none of the ongoing chaos in the streets of Libya has any effect on the production and shipment of the oil from the heavily guarded oil infrastructure. As well isn't it great that the oil now gets sent to Europe and not that evil China.
Libya and Iraq are great examples of the progress that the people of a country can make when we in the west intervene to replace their dictators.
I find the 9/11 connection interesting. It is 39 years since the coup in Chile. It is also about 40 years since the Americans began arming and training the type of people that committed these killings in Libya. In Afghanistan the people have paid the price with 2,000,000 dead in the last 40 years. That in a country with a similar sized population as Canada's. Most of those deaths are directly attributable to America arming and training fanatics.

Ah - I see that Paul Dewar, after accidentally slipping from the script about Iran, has been dragged back into compliance with the correct line on Libya. According to him, a Libyan crowd attacking and killing representatives of an invading force is not simply murder or whatever - it's "terrorism". These bullshitters are not fit to carry the name "Opposition".
Today I was saddened to learn of the violent attack on the US consulate in Benghazi that killed US Ambassador to Libya Chris Stevens along with three embassy staff. New Democrats unequivocally condemn this brutal and senseless act of terrorism.
Our thoughts are with the family, friends and colleagues of all the US personnel stationed at the consulate during this attack, especially those who lost loved ones.
We ask the government to work with our international partners to send a clear message that this kind of violence is unacceptable. We must work together to ensure the people of Libya can live in a nation free of violence and fear.

From what I have been hearing about the fellow he is more aligned with right wing Christians, including anti choice campaigns, among other things. And the name that he is associated most with in the news is Pastor Terry Jones. Given the tone or the rhetoric, and its origin in the states, it makes far more sense.

There may be no anti-Islamic movie at all (of sorts)
If you watch closely, you can see that when the actors are reading parts of the script that do not contain Islam-specific language, the audio from the sound stage is used (the audio that was recorded as the actors were simultaneously being filmed). But anytime the actors are referring to something specific to the religion (the Prophet Muhammed, the Quran, etc.) the audio recorded during filming is replaced with a poorly executed post-production dub. And if you look EVEN closer, you can see that the actors’ mouths are saying something other than what the dub is saying.
For example, at 2:53, the voiceover says “His name is Muhammed. And we can call him The Father Unknown.” In this case, the whole line is dubbed, and it appears the actor is actually saying, “His name is George (?). And we can call him The Father Unknown.” I assume the filmmakers thought they were being slick, thinking that dubbing the whole line instead of just the name would make it more seamless and less noticeable to the viewer. But once you start to look for these dubs, it’s hard to see anything else.

Cindy Lee Garcia told Gawker that she called the film's writer and director, who has now gone into hiding, when she saw the protests and his quotes in the media.
"'Why did you do this?' and he said, 'I'm tired of radical Islamists killing each other. Let other actors know it's not their fault,'" she told Gawker. "I'm going to sue his butt off."
She said the mysterious filmmaker, who's identified himself as Sam Bacile, said on set that he was Egyptian and spoke Arabic with his associates. (A report from the Atlantic indicated the filmmaker was not Jewish or Israeli, as the filmmaker stated earlier in interviews.) Garcia said she was horrified when she discovered the video's connection to the deaths of four Americans after an assault on the U.S. Consulate in Libya.
"Now we have people dead because of a movie I was in," she said. "It makes me sick."
Garcia said the only ruckus she saw during her three days on set in July 2011 involved the filmmaker's request that the character appearing to viewers as Muhammad sleep with a girl who looked 7 years old, rather than 10. Assistant directors protested, Garcia said.

This was really terrible journalism. The guy - "Sam Bacile" - was reported as a "prominent real estate developer" in California. If one is, in fact, developing and buying and selling real estate, it leaves quite a paper trail. And yet there's no piece of paper tying one "Sam Bacile" to any company, any transaction, anything at all. You'd think that before you run stories of this significance, you may want to spend 5 minutes on Google and try to obtain some basic semblance of the facts.

Lack of fact checking and the demise of investigative journalism is a reality--partly a media economic decision, and part political.

A federal law enforcement official said Thursday that Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, 55, was the man behind "Innocence of Muslims," a film denigrating Islam and the Prophet Muhammad that sparked protests earlier in the week in Egypt and Libya and now in Yemen. U.S. authorities are investigating whether the deaths of U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans in Libya came during a terrorist attack.
The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss an ongoing investigation, said Nakoula was connected to the persona of Sam Bacile, a figure who initially claimed to be the writer and director of the film. But Bacile quickly turned out to a false identity and the Associated Press traced a cellphone number used by Bacile to a southern California house where Nakoula was found.
Bacile initially claimed a Jewish and Israeli background. But others involved in the film said his statements were contrived as evidence mounted that the film's key player was a southern Californian Coptic Christian with a checkered past.

It's unclear if he was thrown out of his old organization (which would be quite a feat since it appears to have been a one man show) or if he just folded it for some reason (eg unpaid bills) and started a new one man operation. The only consistency is Banerjee's statements is the hatred of Muslims - so he's backed the Serbs against the Bosnians, the Israelis against the Palestinians, the US against Iraq and Iran and also come out against faith school funding because it would have funded Muslim schools.
He teamed up with the JDL a few years ago to oppose the construction of a mosque in Newmarket and has worked with them several times since then. He's also associated with the Canadian Coalition for Democracies.

I'm not sure I get the point. Are these commentators saying that violent attack on an embassy, and murder are a justified response to religious ridicule by some fringe group? Good to know where the red line is. Now everyone who wants to inflame the situation knows just what they have to do.
Though it begs the question of why some people cordoned off the areas around one of the embassies before the grenades started flying. If it is truly an insult that demands violent response you'd think the entire country would have a religious duty to be in on it, no? But that isn't exactly what is happening.
Frankly I think that is nonsense, and I also think this has far more to do with profits than prophets and more earthly power than the godly kind. In that respect, I think the media arm of the Iranian government is shilling a line that isn't all that different than Mr. Bacile's.

As much as some here want it to be the current protests are not about anti-imperialism, they are not about free speech, they are not about GITMO, or western dress trends, or drinking beer or or eating pork; they are about blasphemy. While most of us here in the West tend to laugh blasphemy off as old world stuff from days gone by other parts of the world do not share that view.
Notice how the most violent protests are in countries where they have blasphemy laws that protect Islam (or religion). The people are angry the makers of the video aren’t being arrested and hold our government responsible for it. By their thought process if we, the people of the USA, don’t demand the arrest of these people that must mean we as a nation support what they done (committing blasphemy against Islam, not to be confused with supporting their right under our laws to do make the video). That’s how they end up outside our embassies more angry over this stuff as compared to when we bomb or invade a Muslim country. Hard to understand isn't it?
Many are demanding the makers of this video be held to thier laws... Should they?

I'm not so sure about that. I think a lot of people on all sides of this would like us to bellieve that all Muslims are fanatics who can't control themselves if you cross that red line. But having heard interviews with people there who stayed away, as well as the odd timing of all this, I think there is a bit more orchestration involved. If it was an uncontrolled mob outraged at blasphemy against their prophet then how did they manage to line up people to do crowd control? Did someone just have that grenade launcher sitting in their closet?
I am noticing more how these protests are happening in countries where there is an interest in controlling the people - and also how most of those harping on this religious line, including the makers of the film, and some in the western media -have some very secular interests behind all the rhetoric.

I think it is far more complex than just pointing to religion. The Arab Spring protestors came from the complete cross section of the population. The people in the streets have a lot of reasons to be there and we likely only understabnd one or two at best.
The crowds in both Cairo and Benghazi included not only radical Islamists, but also groups such as Egypt’s Ultras, the soccer fan club that played an important role in the 2011 revolution. The media has concentrated on the presence of bearded men and black flags to paint these protests as the work of Salafis, and to point the finger at Ansar al-Shariah and other fringe groups. The black flag (the banner of the eagle) does not, of course, belong solely to al-Qaeda or even to Islamic radicalism. It has become a commonplace symbol used by those who want a more robust Islamic presence in the public sphere as well as by those who want to live under an Islamic theocracy. Both claim the flag, so its presence is not conclusive about the currents that took part in this, and other such events. It will take time to fully understand the roots of such violent acts, after careful forensic reporting on those who came to the protests. Nevertheless, some preliminary observations can be made regarding the ongoing social convulsions, at least in the Libyan case.
Benghazi’s Long Resentment of the West
This is not the first such protest in Benghazi, the eastern city of Libya. Over the course of this year, tumult has been the order of the day. In January, a crowd stormed the headquarters of the National Transitional Council. In April, a bomb was thrown at a convoy that included the head of the UN Mission to Libya, and another bomb exploded at a courthouse. In May, a rocket was fired at the Red Cross office. A convoy carrying the head of the British consulate was attacked in June, and since then the consulate has been abandoned. In August, a pipe bomb exploded in front of the US consulate building. Frustration with the West is commonplace amongst sections of society, who are not Gaddafi loyalists, but on the contrary fought valiantly in the 2011 civil war against Gaddafi. The NATO intervention did not mollify a much more fundamental grievance they have against the US-UK, namely the sense of humiliation of the Arab world against the arrogance of Western domination in cultural and political terms.
