The US has been making the same, mistake over and over again for two hundred years. When will they learn that democracy is something that people build together not something a conquering army hands out. This exact same reasoning was presented in Congress prior to the invasion of British North America. All our Canadian fore bearers were supposed to greet the US troops as liberators. If we didn't have the Empire guarding our back we would have fallen to Manifest Destiny two hundred years ago.
The NATO intervention in Libya was an unmitigated disaster.
At the outset, Washington policymakers believed that the people would rise up en masse against Gaddhafi, and embrace the new "democratic" government which was installed in the aftermath of his execution. This didn’t happen.

I increasingly doubt if the R2Pers like Axworthy, Project Ploughshares, Peace Magazine (Metta Spencer) and many on the “Left” (not Murray Dobbin or Canadian Dimensions) are having many second thoughts about Libya. The present chaos there is just a step on the road to “democracy”. Like good Christians we had to “do something”. Anything is better than Khadafi. Now good R2Pers are saying that the world (the international community) failed to intervene in Syria (like Rwanda) We turned our backs (which we didn’t do in Libya). Africa will be (like the 19th century) the White Man’s burden for the 21st Century. The ICC (an End to Impunity) is ready. And the generous US Military aid projects.
