I decided to use this old thread rather than start a new one.
Three developments this week:
1. James Moore says BC is not a doormat for Enbridge. Trying to save his seat in BC. Same for other Con MPs in BC.
2. The Premier of the Northwest Territories suggested using the Mackenzie Valley pipeline to ship tar sand product north to tankers in the Arctic instead of the Enbridge/Northern Gateway route.
3. Harper set a deadline of December 2013 for the Northern Gateway hearings to finish, and the government will make it's decision by June 2014 - a year ahead of the next federal election, so the pipeline does not become an issue in the next federal election. (Harper seems to forget BC has a provincial election coming up...)
In Calgary, realization that the Enbridge pipeline might not go through is beginning to mount, and alternative routes are being considered - shipping by train instead, and expanding the existing pipeline to Vancouver (Burnaby?).

Corporate American energy giant, Kinder Morgan, is planning to double the amount of tar sands heavy oil it brings to our coast for export by building another pipeline from the tar sands right to Burrard Inlet in Vancouver. Doing so would increase the amount of large oil tankers travelling our waters to over 300 each year, increasing the risk of a disastrous spill in this amazingly special part of the world.
So far, the voices of the majority of people who would be affected by a major oil spill from a tanker in Georgia Strait or a pipeline through their community have not been heard by industry and government. Now is a chance to start being heard.
Kinder Morgan is holding information sessions across the Lower Mainland and in other parts of BC about the proposed new Trans Mountain Pipeline. In our opinion, these have not been widely announced and we feel they may be a smoke screen for “consultation” and they are undoubtedly hoping not many folks will turn up to voice their opposition. Some sessions have already happened but there are more to come. Let them know you do not consent to have more oil transported through our communities and our waters!
Please attend these sessions. Let Kinder Morgan know what you think of its plans to bring even more oil to our coast. But be warned, you will be asked to sign in when you arrive, and we are unclear how your personal information will be used or your presence counted in their reporting.
But your presence is needed. We want to make sure that the company does not use these sessions to imply there is support for the project when they formally apply to federal and provincial agencies for approval in 2013. Of course, we ask that all objections are peaceful and respectful.

Her analysis focuses mainly on the economic argument against this proposal, which is substantial, but she also talks about Enbridge's poor environmental record. ..today, in vancouver, there was an attempt to deliver a letter to a corporation called apache. this company is wanting to build a fracking pipeline called the pacific trails pipeline that runs through unis’tot’en territory. here a camp has been set up and is barring the road to any that have the intention of contributing to that pipeline.
..we were unable to deliver that letter as the whole of the 16th floor of the building that houses apache had been sealed. If that was not enough there were at least a dozen police blocking the entrance to the building itself both inside and out. anyone wanting to enter were asked to produce id and state there business.
..the letter itself was from the unis’tot’en people and was instead read out to the 200 or so people who had gather in support of the camp and

Please pass this message to those who organized the ralley in front of Apache Oil on Tuesday. Tomorrow Thursday Nov 29th is a big day the the new convention center. The BC Federation of labour will at some point through out the day be debating the topic of the proposed OIL PIPELINES . This debate will be very divisive as it is no doubt such project would create a lot of jobs but of course at what cost to the environment. I am persoannly opposed to the pipelines and support you fully in fighting them off. This is why when tomorrow morning as over 1600+ delegates reperesenting over 50 + unions eneter the buidling I suggest a few people outside with signs like the ones that were at the ralley in front of the Apache oil office. As the debate heats up I have no doubt you will have the power to inspire some people to do whats right and speak on the mics in defense of our indigenous people and the right to their land!
Convention starts at 9am people will be coming in earlier come no later than 8:30 . ALSO the leader of the official opposition Thomas Mulcair of the FEDERAL NDP will be making a speech at the convention that morning. YOU MUST BE PRESENT IN THE MORNING TO HAVE YOUR VOICE HEARD OUTSIDE THE BUILDING IN A PEACEFUL WAY!!

Risks not worth it

Re: Pipeline is near schools, Burnaby NOW, Nov. 28.
I, too, am a parent concerned about the Kinder-Morgan pipeline's effect on Burnaby schools. Not only are three schools close to the current pipeline - Stoney Creek, Lyndhurst, and Forest Grove - but it also passes within a block of Burnaby North Secondary School, Capitol Hill Elementary School and Confederation Park Elementary School. At the intersection of Gamma and Dundas, it passes by the corner of my child's school playground in Confederation Park.
When this same pipeline broke in North Burnaby in 2007, it sprayed oil on houses over 100 metres away, contaminating gardens and even getting inside open windows. 250 residents had to be evacuated.
Surely we cannot afford to increase the risk of this hazard for six of our local schools.

..your not the only one. i am very much impressed at the struggles occuring in texas re the pipeline. very creative stuff going on. check out their site if you haven't already. there's a video that goes along with the pic from inside the pipe.
..i wondered what the unis’tot’en peoples thought about it. haven't found anything on their web page.

Trans Mountain Pipeline operators ignored alarms warning of Abbotsford oil spill: report

Kinder Morgan Shuts Down Pipeline Open House at the Earliest Sign Of Community Opposition
December 5th (Coast Salish Territories, Victoria) – Community members responding to the Tsleil-Waututh nation’s request to respectfully engage Kinder Morgan about its Trans Mountain expansion project were unable to register their concerns at the Kinder Morgan open house, as Kinder Morgan reps shut down the open house several hours early at 6:30pm.
“Kinder Morgan says it wants to consult with community, but when the community shows up with real concerns and challenges the misinformation that the company is spreading, instead of engaging in dialogue Kinder Morgan reps shut down the open house,” said Eric Nordal from Social Coast....

Not surprising, given the alliance of eastern finance with Alberta oil that has replaced the Montréal-Toronto axis with the Toronto-Calgary axis as the business backbone of the country.
In fact, shipping Alberta tar sands products to Eastern Canada is now being posed as a major “national unity” project. This was evident at the meeting of provincial and territorial first ministers in Halifax in late November. Quebec premier Pauline Marois (who had reversed her previous opposition to attending such meetings) met with Alberta premier Alison Redford and announced that her Parti Québécois government will establish a joint working group with the Alberta government to study the possible use of Quebec refineries receiving crude oil from the tar sands. This involves not just Alberta and Quebec alone, said Manitoba's NDP premier Greg Selinger. “It's part of a national strategy.”....

BREAKING: Judge Halts Construction on Section of KXL!
Mike Bishop has won a temporary restraining order against TransCanada
A judge ordered TransCanada to halt construction on Mr. Bishop’s land until a hearing on December 19th. If successful, that hearing could lead to a more long term temporary injunction against TransCanada which could stop work for months! This comes at a critical time because TransCanada has already started bulldozing his biofuels crop.

A new poll suggests that 60 per cent of British Columbians now oppose the proposed Northern Gateway bitumen pipeline. And according to the results, controversy over Enbridge's tanker route map -- which omitted 1,000 square kilometres of islands in the Douglas Channel -- didn't help: 58 per cent of respondents who saw the map said that it worsened their opinion of the project....

Northern Gateway Pipeline: First Nation Leaders Say They Are Closing B.C. Borders To Pipeline
VANCOUVER - First Nations' leaders in British Columbia say they've built "an unbroken wall of opposition" from the U.S border to the Arctic Ocean against a proposed $5.5 billion petroleum pipeline.
The leaders announced Thursday that several First Nations have added their names to the Save the Fraser River Declaration, bringing the total number of signatory nations in B.C. to 61 and effectively closing the province's borders to the Northern Gateway project proposed by Enbridge (TSX:ENB).
The leaders announced they are also opposed to any efforts by Kinder Morgan to export Alberta tar-sands crude oil from B.C.'s south....

..it's been a long time boom boom, that i believed that electoral politics is the way out of the hole we've (the population as a whole) dug for ourselves. the paradigm has to change and for me that means direct democracy. tell me, do you believe that the ndp will save us from economic or enviromental ruin?

..there is little if any meaningful difference between federal and provincial ndp. one just has to watch how they trot out provincial premiers at convention time. to suggest that a federal ndp is totally unknown because they haven't been elected is avoiding my question to you. their position on economy, trade, military, pipelines is fairly clear. not to mention they've been around parliment for decades. we are not going in blind.

Okay, now I understand where you're going. But if you go back to my post #42 where I entered this discussion, you will see that I asked if Mulcair had done any consultation with Canadians - and his own party - before jumping on the pro-tar sands bandwagon. No one answered my question. My position is that the tar sands should be shut down as soon as possible and alternative energies brought online. I'm absolutely disgusted with Mulcair on this subject.

..i was reading your question as rhetorical boom boom. we both know he didn't consult except for maybe the caucus. whether he did or not it is the policy now which isn't a whole lot different from the bc provincial ndp position except for the embridge west pipeline and that becomes irrelevant if the other pipelines go forward.

The BC NDP is on board with the LNG plants and the fracturing that is required. I would presume the federal NDP would not take a differing position but it would be great if they did. The NDP neither provincially nor federally so far is talking about the fact that Canada is trying to sell as much carbon as fast as possible. In the face of climate change it seems like they have missed the point or they would be opposing most of these carbon projects on principal. Expanding the tar sands and expanding the export of LNG is sheer lunacy.

We have to look no further that the Kalamazoo line spill of tar sands crude in 2010 to know that these pipelines are not built for such use.
