About time. I don't know if they picked the date on purpose, but it was on the news this morning.

I bought donuts in celebration.

Anti-choice assholes have set up a hateful and disgusting demonstration in the middle of campus today, replete with horrible images and co-opting anti-oppression struggles by invoking the Holocaust, the Rwandan genocide, lynching in the American South and the Canadian Residential school system. It's awful. Fortunately, committed students have created a counter-protest and are trying to ensure this group isn't allowed back on campus next year.

In praise of all the women in my life who have helped, changed, inspired, mentored and loved me throughout my life; in recognition that most of you, if not all of you, make less than a man doing the same work; in admiration of those who have entered fields traditionally dominated by men and who have suffered for doing so: the trades, academia, management, politics, etc.; in acknowledgment of the role the female body plays in public life, endlessly assessed, analyzed, evaluated, co-opted and controlled by political and media discourses; in awareness of all the manifestations of gendered violence which continue apace and my own complicity in them; in realization of all the socioeconomic barriers which currently exist which disproportionately affect women: lack of accessible and affordable child care, poverty, lack of affordable housing, food security, lack of access to education; in solidarity with all the incredible women who struggle every day against the above and in remembrance of all the incredible victories you've already won and the prices paid.

Thank you. Happy International Women's Day!

Making the rounds on FB:

This originally came with a poem from a great author, but I think the image says it all.

What country do the young mum, her baby and her burro live in?

We can see not only her incredibly hard work, but her pride. Baby impeccably dressed.

No idea.

It came with a Rumi poem, and nothing else.

I like Rumi, but it was all from the perspective of a guy talking about what a woman is for. Didn't really do it for me. I figured the picture spoke for itself far better.
