Paul Irngaut, Nunavut.... or maybe Hunter Tootoo if he resigns the Speaker/MLA in Goverment of Nunavut before 2015.

Peter Kusugak is not going seek cuz he is retired.

I like Gerry Caplan's writings in the Globe & Mail online edition on Fridays. Not sure what kind of politician he would make but he's got sound analytical skills and is not afraid to tell it like it is.

Presumably one of Erin Weir or Ryan Meili will fail to secure the Sask NDP leadership. They should be encouraged to run federally. Noah Evanchuk should be encouraged to run again. Marc Laferriere should be encouraged to run again in Brant. Maybe Grant Robertson should be encouraged to run again in Huron Bruce and James Gordon could be convinced to run federally in Guelph.

If I may make a smug statement here, perhaps it's safe now for Buzz Hargrove to run for a seat in Mississauga Wink

No, I mean for the NDP.  He's an opportunist, y'know.  "Hey, Jagmeet Singh proves that anything's possible in Peel Region.  Maybe the Dippers'll let me back in, now."

Naomi Klein

I like Naomi Klein. And I still agree with much of what she said 12 years ago, in a column entitled Don't expect the NDP to lead the way.

You could ask her if she has changed her mind.

I don't know Klein personally, but we were in a few classes together at UofT, and I interviewed her for the campus radio station when she was editor of The Varsity, but I can't imagine her as a politician.  Not that she wouldn't be extremely effective, but it seemed to me that her intellect was far too pragmatic to dive into the stew of Canadian politics.

I may be completely wrong.  Speculating, perhaps she might have had a change of heart. I think she would make an amazing candidate, regardless.

an "amazing" candidate? I doubt it

she joins a social-democratic party coming from a writing and theory background way way to the left of the mainstream, and then somehow connects with the Tim Horton's crowd? I don't see that; no history of compromise, no general appeal or riding roots anywhere

Stockholm

There are also some top tier candidates who ran in 2011 and came very close to winning who should definitely try again - like Noah Evanchuk who lost by 500 votes in Palliser and who could run in one of the proposed new purely urban seats in Regina.

felixr

Nettie Wiebe could probably win in an all-urban riding in Saskatoon. Every election, she has increased her popular support. In the last race she scored 47% of the vote and still lost.

Not every local candidate has to be a candidate for PM. She'd do well with the right crowd. If, say, the Annex (where a lot of U of T students live) were to be pasted into St. Paul's as planned, Klein would make a great candidate. None of the neighbourhoods in that riding are exactly the "Tim Horton's crowd".

felixr

Now that Tony Martin has retired, who should run for the NDP in Sault Ste. Marie?

I'm assuming "Tim Horton's crowd" means regular folk -- IE, working class, labourers, proletariat.  Interesting that "way to the left" would come to not include this class of people.  It used to be that conservative = aristocrat/elite, liberal = merchant class/business, and social democrat/labour = working class or grunt (IE, those found in beer halls or doughnut shops, like me.)  If a leftist would now have to avoid such a crowd to win an election, well, then times have changed.

Thanks for the revealing glimpse into the bowels of electoral politics, folks!

I dunno, I just sort of associate "Tim Horton's crowd" as referring to people who live out in the land of suburban sprawl. Those characters in that Air Farce skit in the donut shop, where they'd always go "You got that right! / You betcha! / Oh yeah, oh yeah.". Folks who drop into Timmy's because nothing else is open late.

Jeff Itcush who ran in Mount Royal but lost to Irwin Cotler.

Put him in a winnable riding.  Some people say is the best "MP who never got elected".

I hope he runs in the Montreal municipal elections.  Knowing him, he probably won't want to.  Somebody told me that the Libs were after him.  I don't know what that means.

E,

Yea right greyscale, let's go after the guy that gave the BC Liberals a pass on the BC Rail scandal. Jeesh!

He's probably leaving UBC because his buddies in the BC Legislature will soon be getting the boot!

Also, Stephen Toope, the President of UBC, has just announced he will resign from that post. He could be a strong challenger to Joyce Murray in Vancouver-Quadra if he has NDP sympathies.

kropotkin1951

So what exactly did Greyscale do to you. I can't even find a post by him in this thread and you are attacking him for something.  WTF is with you anyways.

Topp said he wants to run in Quebec, so I'd bet he'd pick a Montreal riding.

He is from Longueuil on the south shore, where there is a new riding, although it's not in Longueuil: La Prairie.

Sana Hassainia's riding (Verchères—Les Patriotes) shifts a little west but mostly continues.

Pierre Nantel's riding (Longueuil—Pierre-Boucher) is mostly the new Longueuil.

Djaouida Sellah's riding (Saint-Bruno—Saint-Hubert) is mostly the new Montarville.

Matthew Dubé's riding (Chambly--Borduas) mostly becomes the new Beloeil—Chambly.

Sadia Groguhé's riding (Saint-Lambert) is mostly the new LeMoyne.

Hoang Mai's riding (Brossard—La Prairie) is mostly the new Brossard—Saint-Lambert, where his victory margin over the Liberal shrinks from 13.72% to a transposed 4.07%.

La Prairie is a new riding, made up of 37% of Brossard--La Prairie and 45% of Châteauguay--Saint-Constant. Its transposed vote is NDP 49.93%. Hmm, maybe Hoang Mai will want it?

Sylvain Chicoine's riding (Châteauguay--Saint-Constant) goes more to the new Châteauguay—Lacolle.

Anne Minh-Thu Quach's riding (Beauharnois—Salaberry) goes mostly to the new Salaberry.

Jamie Nicholls' riding (Vaudreuil-Soulanges) goes mostly to the new Vaudreuil.

Alain Ackad beat a star Conservative candidate, Larry Smith, by 1,000 votes in Lac St. Louis in west Montreal only to lose to Liberal Francis Scarpleggia by 2,000 votes. When I saw him on the news several times, I was impressed by his personable nature.

He is now working for Pierrefond-Dollard MP Lysane Blanchette-Lamothe.

Eric Peterson in Regina Qu'Appelle?

Interesting!

He played Tommy Douglas in the two Trudeau mini-series, if I remember correctly!

But he'd be portrayed by the Conservatives as a Toronto resident, don't you think?

For sure, but the NDP has been pretty moribund in much of Saskatchewan for a while now. Anything to up the excitement/profile level.

kropotkin1951

High profile yes, but getting a little on the old side.  He will be 68 when the election is held and 72 at the end of his term.  I have always liked his acting and 10 years ago would have thought he would be a star candidate.  The NDP needs to appeal to younger voters and I am not sure whether he will do that.

He does have a profile in Sask from his role on Corner Gas but in that show he played a dotty old man.

felixr

Young people don't vote.

Most voters are white, too, so we'd better be careful on that point as well, right?

Maybe just reconsider your post, krop. I'm sure you didn't mean it.

Since when is that a good thing? Aside from the patisan angle that younger voters are more likely to vote NDP than any other demographic, it's a good thing generally for democracy if more people are participating. Maybe we need to take a look in the mirror and find out which young person issues would increase voter turnout?

Unfortunate, Taro was a Buffalo resident (I'm a Sabres fan, so I'm probably one of the few who know exactly whom you are referring to!)

But, even he couldn't be as bad as some of the clowns Harper appointed.

Isn't he from Charlottetown? Money mouth

David Young

I didn't think so.

He was a late-round draft pick by Buffalo G.M. Punch Imlach in the 1974 Amateur Draft from the Toyko Katanas.

Speaking of athletes, Olympian Clara Hughes comes to mind as someone who'd be a fantastic NDP candidate.

I would also advocate running more candidates that are from other ethnic groups.  I don't think we should run nothing but old white guys just because that is the demographic that is most likely to vote. Maybe you should reconsider your analogy Unionist it doesn't make much sense IMO.

The NDP needs to excite people who don't normally vote and running old white guys as STAR candidates is not a great way to do that. One of things I really like about the NDP's Quebec caucus is its diversity, including age diversity. I think that diversity was one of the reasons that they made their momentous breakthrough.

if linda mcquaig wins Toronto centre, where could Jennifer Hollett run in 2015 if she still wants to? University-Rosedale?

Spadina-Fort York, to replace Olivia Chow who will vacate the seat to restore sanity to Toronto as its new mayor!

To restore big spending? I hope when Olivia Chow runs, she remembers the reasons Rob Ford was so popular (before the drug-induced meltdown) and doesn't give her political opponents any grist for their mills.

Has Brian Topp decided if he is running and in what riding?

maybe a new thread?
