#FailureToLaunch: Japanese City Makes False Alarm Tweet About N Korean Missile Launch

http://rt.com/news/japan-mistake-tweet-missile-627/

"The Japanese city of Yokohama sent a shocking tweet to its 40,000 followers on Wednesday who it accidentally posted a message saying that North Korea had launched a ballistic missile..."

kropotkin1951

Here is article I liked because it puts the North Korean response in a historical context. The US is the belligerent party in this whole affair. It is its insistence on sabre rattling off other nations shores that causes the tension not the reaction to such blatant provocation. If China, Brazil, and Venezuela conducted joint war games in the Gulf of Mexico the US would likely go to war.

Quote:

Missing in what passes for discourse on the DPRK in the corporate media is that the US was conducting month-long war maneuvers last March in Korea, now extended into April, using stealth bombers, undetectable by radar, capable of carrying nuclear weapons. And this year these are not “deterrent” war maneuvers, but “pre-emptive war” maneuvers.

Would the US government and people get a little “irrational” if a foreign country that previously had killed millions of our people, sent nuclear capable stealth bombers off the coasts of New York City, Washington DC, Houston, Miami, Los Angeles, San Francisco, there to fly around for a month in preparation for a possible nuclear attack on us? For what is called, in warped US language, war “games”?

The US may have killed 20% of the population of Korea, said General Curtis Lemay, who was involved in the US air war on Korea. If so, that is a higher rate of genocidal slaughter than what the Nazis inflicted on Poland or the Soviet Union. The Korean War may be unknown ancient history to us, but it is no more ancient history to Koreans than the Nakba is to Palestinians.

The US wouldn't go to war over it but they would sure as hell use it to terrify it's citizens. Increase more spending for the military. Make some homeland security decisons that would impinge on citizens freedoms and rights.

South Koreans Fear Paying the Price For Another US-Led War (and vid)

Bec.De.Corbin Bec.De.Corbin's picture

If anything most South Koreans, my extended family included, over the years have grown numb to the war of words between NK the USA and their own government. They are pretty jaded when it comes to this stuff. Presstv (Iranian state news by the way) is full of it for the most part and if anything got it backwards. If South Koreans fear anything, for the lack of a better term, it’s what Kim Jung Un is going to do, not what the USA or their armed forces is going to do should North Korea attack them (for whatever reason). Most South Koreans realize nothing can or will happen until North Korea actully does something and for the most part go about their lives not obsessing about it.

Here is what's all over the news in South Korea...

My brother in law whom lives about 60 miles south of Seoul summed it up like this, "I wish he'd shoot his damned missle off and get it over with". He never said anything about the United States.

Obama Issues New Threat to North Korea  - by Peter Symonds

As part of his aggressive 'pivot to Asia' against China, Obama has exploited the Korean crisis to apply pressure not only to Pyongyang but also to Beijing. Japan is also very hostile. The present government is very rightwing. It is trying to build a strong military using 'dangerous' DPRK as a pretext.

The USA is the only country in the world with nuclear weapons stationed on foreign soil and nuclear-armed battleships roaming the seven seas. You are right they have gone away from the BB hull design and no longer use that designation for any ship.  You are merely playing the semantics game because the other styles of ships that would be used in battle are no longer called battleships. Here is a list of types of ships the US Navy uses now.  All of them are ships that can be used in battle.

Oh I don't know.... I think we do a pretty good job of that ourselves. Sometimes I wonder what would become of Canadian identity if we didn't have the U.S. to compare ourselves favourably to.

kropotkin1951

Canadian Exceptionalism is not a national trait. Although I would agree that we are slipping into imperial arrogance as we become more and more integrated into the world order headed by our neighbours to the South.

Our government on the world stage has adopted that kind of arrogant Exceptionalism attitude but I don't think the average Canadian is there yet. It is going to cost us our aviation centre in Montreal because no one listens to a bully's third rate minions the way they do to the leader of the pack.

Now your just being snappy. It has nothing to do with nationality and you’re taking this way too serious.  We used to pull a variant of that joke on each other when I was in the Army… it involved putting black shoe polish on the brow pad of the gunner’s or commander's site of the victim’s tank.

Fidel

Okay that's funny.

Bec, your country has been the only one to use nuclear weapons to commit mass murder. U.S. hawks have threatened other countries including North Korea, Vietnam, Iran etc with nuclear terror. It is illegal since Nuremberg to threaten sovereign countries militarily let alone nuclear threats.

What do you think about that?

Of course if you used to do it while serving in the American military then it must be all right.  Here is another "hilarious" joke your military personnel have engaged in.

I don't find anything funny about imperial humour. How many civilians in other countries have the evil North Koreans killed this year? How many has your jovial Commander in Chief ordered murdered this year?  Do you think he jokes and laughs ever week while he makes up the murder list in the Oval Office?

Roystonbones

Although horrific Chernobyl was not an intentional bombing of civillians. The only country to intentionally use nuclear bombs is the US - Nagasaki and Hiroshima.

I agree in some respects it has nothing to do with nationality - especailly on the NATO side. We are now so integrated militarilly with the American psyche of freedom that we Canadians are too beleiving in our own exceptionalism and  identifying more and more with American culture instead of our own. If I have to bomb you its for your own good.

Given the US Military dictatorship's proven record for perpetrating nuclear mass murder and a host of other war crimes since WW II, and its propensity for actually threatening nuclear mass murder and actual-historical record for bombing and invading sovereign countries since just the end of the cold war, which of the principal countries involved in this standoff on the Korean peninsula would you suppose is the largest threat to peace and democracy in the region? Hint: Korea is nowhere near the continental USA, and North Korea who you've been brainwashed into fearing has no record for actually bombing any country.

kropotkin1951

A found the "joke"by an American to be in the same category as black face. I don't find imperial humour funny at all, whether it is laughing at world leaders who will not bend to will of the Evil Empire or its soldiers getting a good laugh out of pissing on dead bodies.

This thread is about Korean war games. You know the ones where the US is on the wrong side of the Pacific threatening a country with mass destruction. Since that country has already been destroyed once by the US and its allies I don't find any humour in it.

To me the "joke" does not count as discussion from a progressive point of view that incorporates anti imperialism. So I responded with the reality of American humour within its occupying troops.

Nor do I.

Especially not on the 43rd anniversary of the murder of U.S. students who were protesting their country's invasion and massacre of the people of Viet Nam and the undeclared bombing of Cambodia.

Today, as then, there were those who believed and spread every filthy lie told by the U.S. murderers, and demonized and dehumanized anyone who didn't play ball.

Come on, kropotkin, you can call our fellow babbler by name, unless you want to reduce this to judging him based on his passport - which in my books is as good as racism

This is bullshit. And if you want to get down to it he did have the funniest joke.

Now can we stop this, or do I have to trump your indignities to dead bodies with some downed airliners, starving children, and people seized at the border having holes punched through their hands and strung together with lengths of cable?

Or for that matter there are enough atrocities committed by Canadians, so the passport shit is kind of academic, isn't it?

I don't really care if Koreans want to choose democracy or not and I don't think it's a valid reason for the US to be involved in their politics but I don't think the average North Korea really gets much in the way of choice when it comes to their government.
