Star Trek and Canadian Politics

In celebration of the newest release of the Star Trek movie franchise: Star Trek Into Darkness; let's compare Canadian Politics to Star Trek! LOL Is Thomas Mulcair the Commander William Riker of the Star Trek: The Next Generation? Is Justin Trudeau the nurse Chapel of Star Trek!? LOL, let's have some good ole fun with this topic, if you'd like. :-)

The PMO and the Conservatives could be the Borg Collective

Resistance is futile, you will be assimilated

ygtbk

Does that make Rona Ambrose Seven-of-Nine?

Does that make Jack Layton Jean Luke Picard? Mulcair was his deputy leader.

Brachina

Nathan Cullen could be the NDPs worf.

Not until she is captured and has her connection to the Borg collective severed.

Brachina

Francios Bovine used to be a Liberal and she was freed by Jack, so she could be the NDPs seven of nine.

kropotkin1951

If the Conservatives are the Borg then maybe the Liberals are the Ferengi but that still doesn't make Francios 7 of 9.

Justin Trudeau is Wesley Crusher.

Stephen Harper is the Chancellor of the Klingon High Command, and we know how corrupt that is.

Mulcair is a random Romulan.

Charlie Angus is Tom Paris.

Olivia Chow is Deanna Troi.

Peter Mackay is Garak the former Cardassian spy-turned-tailor.

Libby Davis is B'Elanna Torres.

P.S. I love this thread so much.

Brachina

The Tories should assimulate the Liberal Party and then it fits.

And Justin is not Wesley Crusher. Wesley was smart and usually responible and hard working, Trudeau is not.

Pierre Desault the youngest member of Parliament is Wesley Crusher, he is all the above things.

I'm okay with Chow as Deanna Trio.

Libby Davies is Doctor Beverly Crusher, Health Critic.

Mulcair is Worf, tough, a warrior, and honourible with moments of poetry and depth, with a side order of Riker when he turns on the charm.

Jack was Jean Luke Picard.

Andrea Horwath is Captian Janeway, leading the Ontario NDP back from the wilderness.

Tommy Douglas was Captain Sisko, both Spiritual leader and visionary.

Justin Trudeau is the son of Duras, Pitaq, the one worf desides to spare his life when Gawron gives it to worf.

Emay is the red shirt.

Nathan Cullen is Captain Kirk.

The Tories are the borg and the Liberals are there lastest assimulated drones, with Harper as the Borg Queen.

Nikki Ashton is Kira.

Dax is REB.

Mulcair's Chief of Staff is Miles O'brian.

Peter Julian is Geordy Laforge.

Dexter is Captain of the Equinox Rudy Ransom.

Bashir Alexander Boultrice.

Quark is Dweight Lingerfelter.

Garrik is, while wouldn't you like to know.

Odo is Brian Topp.

I stand by my argument that Trudeau is Wesley Crusher. Wesley has all the right stuff on paper: smart, young, appealing. Yet he is loathesome and ultimately fucks up real bad.

Tongue out

@cco: Hee heee. I loved Garak too, for all his slimy connections and shady history.

Slumberjack

Yeah, Garak was one of my favourite characters as well.

Wesley fucked up one time and in the end did the right thing and confessed. How many times did Wesley save the Enterprise?

And Justin isn't that smart even on papaer.

Tehanu

I agree about the Wesley Crusher/Justin Trudeau comparison. All that cute-puppy-look-at-me-wiggle-as-I-wag-my-tail-with-my-soulful-eyes stuff.

On the other hand, if I had to find a match for my all-time favourite Star Trek character, it would be comparing Pierre Trudeau to Khan.

Charismatic in an evil kind of way? Check.

Bit of a megalomaniac? Check.

Delightfully overblown rhetoric? Check.

Interesting thread, strange in a lot of ways how people are representing their beliefs. Here is what I think.

a. The Borg Collective is socialism/communism at its finest, everyone is equal.

b. The Federation, Romulan Empire and most other large groups are capitalist, liberals, conservatives and other religious orders. They are exploiting each other constantly and enslaving those that can’t fight back.

c. The Klingon Empire reminds me much of Afghanistan, proud people, very interesting past with really horrible leadership at most times.

I find it interesting that most people in this thread decided to have their beloved Canadian politicians fall under the ideology of the Federation when at best the Federation is exploiting and enslaving other races and denying them chances to advance their cultures (One of the prime directives if my memory is correct).

Wouldn't that make Justin Kahn's son, who pays for his father'd hubris with his life?

I-am-not-a-Trekkie (IANAT), but I'm pretty sure that Joachim wasn't Khan's son. Although I could see Justin acknowledging his father's was indeed a superior intellect.

Jacob Two-Two

"Everyone" isn't equal, because there is no everyone. Only the Borg. Ultimately the Borg is a single entity, so the notion of equality is meaningless. As are notions like capitalism and communism.

But I do see some similarities to the Cons. Like the Borg, they are all about homogeny and heirarchy. Everyone serves their function, takes their orders, and follows cultural norms.

Fidel

I'm kind of an original Star Trekky. Disagree with the Luddite demonization of the Borg and negative ways they portray transhumanism, genetic engineering etc. I liken political Conservatives to the Klingons in their villainy. Tough to beat when in power because they typically do not choose diplomacy or debate with democratically elected opposition. It's their way or the highway.

Went and saw the film last night and loved it.

The Star Trek franchise is in a good place. Young people in the theatre were definitely into it.

Wow Todrick, that bit about "exploiting and enslaving other races and denying them chances to advance their cultures" is the most idiosyncratic interpretation of the Prime Directive I have yet seen. Have you ever watched the show(s)?

I think you might have had more luck had you drawn the parallel between the ingrained smugness of the Federation in relationship to every other culture ... "We used to do that in the past, but we are so much better now". That and their willingness to fire phasers and launch the photon torpedoes at the slightest provocation.

And has anyone else wondered what happens when you cross Star Trek with The Flintstones? "ya canna change the laws of physics"!

But that would make Margaret Trudeau into Dr. Crusher...and I just can't see her as a redhead.

Goodness, gracious, I can't believe how many responses this thread has received, considering the topic! LOL I didn't think there were that many Star trek fans out there besides me who enjoyed politics, lol.

I love all of the analysis given to each character and individual.

Brachine, as for Mulcair being Riker, when I wrote this up I was just spitting out random thoughts, like beard = Mulcair, lol. Oh and, noticed how Riker was always on the side waiting to command the Enterprise? In some ways, I fear Mulcair will be the one stuck on the side waiting to govern. I thought if this "Duffy" scandal continues to plague Harper, it may be possible that if, and its a big IF at this point, the Liberals win the next election, it may be possible that the NDP remain in Official Opposition, forcing Mulcair to wait 4 more years perhaps!?

Aside from that, I think I was just throwing things out there. Like there is no comparing nurse Chapel to Trudeau, lol.

I love the picture Cathfire. It brought a huge smile to my face... and I did laugh! I hope others did too!

My opinion:

Harper: General Chang of Star Trek: The Undiscovered Country. Why? Because he is a formidable opponent. He has been able to decieve the electorate enough to win a majority, a majority he has been using the destroy much of the country for the sake of his own personal views. Like Harper, Chang is willing to do anything to keep his world order. Even frame his opponents. "Tickle us, do we not laugh? Prick us, do we not bleed? Wrong us, shall we not revenge?"

Mulcair: I think I might honestly stick t my Riker anlogy. Hopefully though, Mulcair gets his "Enterprise" LOL

Trudeau: Caretaker on Star Trek Voyager: That's the alien/array who basically abandoned Voyager, her crew in the Delta quadrant along with other alien species.  Why the caretaker? Because much like the caretaker, Justin is faced with "protecting" what remains of the Liberal support in this country, while abducting hundreds, maybe thousands of potential compatible Liberals to help save the Liberal party. Though he is not a dying entity, he feels that unless he can attract a compatible mate for himself (a greater electorate), he and the people he now cares for, the Liberals, will all die. More so, he believes that he has strengthen the party by being its leader that he feels compelled to save them, even if it might be the death of them, lol. Much like the caretaker, his ego can very much impede his abilities to think straight.

Trudeau followers: They remind me of the police or mediators of Rubicon III, the episode "Justice" on ST:TNG where Wesley falls on some flowers. The crime is punishable by death! Where Riker claims at the end "When has justice ever been as simple as a rulebook?" Trudeau supporters have a tendency to lash out vicisuouly if you question Trudeau's inabilities or insecurities, or shortfalls. Like the Edo, they may appear to be peaceful, loving, and supportive, were laws are not broken, but there is a dark side to this. Say something bad about Trudeau and WATCH OUT! LOL

"Ford Nation" (the adherents of Toronto Mayor Rob Ford) are kind of like the Ferengi ... just not as smart and without the ethics.

You should try DS9, its the deepest of the star treks, and it really confronts social issues in an intelligent way.

It addresses Unionism, Religious Capitalism, Faith, GLBT issues, sexism, racism, war, terrorism in terms greater then black and white, principle vs. practicality, the price of venegence, the terrible pyscological damage war inflicts on people, time itself, greed, and social revolution, and so much more.

And yes, Captain's red is perfect for Jack :D

cco

DS9 is my favourite as well. And interestingly, the only show to ever truly question the morality of the Federation:

"Michael Eddington" wrote:
I know you. I was like you once. But then I opened my eyes. Open your eyes, Captain. Why is the Federation so obsessed with the Maquis? We've never harmed you. And yet we're constantly arrested and charged with terrorism. Starships chase us through the Badlands, and our supporters are harassed and ridiculed. Why? Because we've left the Federation, and that's the one thing you can't accept. Nobody leaves Paradise, everyone should want to be in the Federation! Hell, you even want the Cardassians to join. You're only sending them replicators because one day, they can take their rightful place on the Federation Council. You know, in some ways, you're even worse than the Borg. At least they tell you about their plans for assimilation. You're more insidious, you assimilate people - and they don't even know it.

I am currently rewatching it on Netflix, already getting near the end of season 6.

Alright, current canon goes like this:

The original series episode featuring Khan had a character named Joaquin. Through what is most likely simple carelessness, there was a character in Wrath of Khan named Joachim. Star Trek's dedicated fan base (among whom I count myself) went on to come up with an explanation, which appears in one of the novels, that Joachim was Joaquin's son, and that after Joaquin's death from the Ceti Eels, Khan raised Joachim as his own.

As far as the new movie goes, I must say that

(SPOILER ALERT!)

Benedict Cumberbatch is definitely the whitest guy I've ever seen named Singh.

To be fair the Federations morality is sort of Questioned When Riker, Worf, Data, and Yar were on that Planet with the Ferengi and talking to that Guardian. They admitted to standing back and letting civilizations to fall.

Also during DS9 I believe the Klingons at times questioned the Federations honor and courage.

Visually, Nathan Cullen brings to mind Robert Picardo's holographic doctor from Voyager. "Please state the nature of your electoral emergency."

The Bloc Québecois as the Maquis, which were brutally eliminated in the war.

The oil and gas industry as those disgusting creatures which crawled into mouths of admirals and controlled their brains.

Hedy Fry as Guinan, because she's been around forever, wears garish hats, is mysteriously immortal and rarely of actual consequence to the plot.

Kim Campbell as Dr. Pulaski. Nobody really liked her and she was swiftly disappeared overnight.

Justin Trudeau as Kes, who grew from a baby to a fully formed adult in a small number of years, and suddenly develops superhuman abilities.

I disagree about the Maquis, they at least were sympathic.

And the Parasite was dead on.
