Quote:
Laurel Broten, Ontario’s minister responsible for women’s issues, revealed in an interview that the provincial government is working with the Ontario Securities Commission on ways to compel companies to set goals for boosting the number of women sitting as corporate directors, as well as in senior management. [...]

The proportion of women serving as directors of Canadian public companies has been stuck at about 10 per cent since the mid-2000s, even as the number of women in senior business roles increases in other countries. [...]

At least nine countries have some form of quota for women on boards, and many others have disclosure and reporting rules. Canada has none, although the Quebec government requires parity on boards of provincially run Crown corporations and agencies.

In April, the Québec government accepted the recommendations of a round table which it had set up in January 2012. Essentially, it would target 20% women on all boards (of companies trading on the stock exchange) within 5 years, 30% within 10 years, and 40% within 15 years. The minister said she couldn't very well make it compulsory, given that even the political parties don't live up to gender parity standards.

Not to mention if you made it compulsory, companies would jsut make token appointments to fulfill the letter of the law (like appointing the board members wives as well but having them do nothing and have no power or responsbilities)

We need a feminist forum for non-kissups, like festivus for the rest of us sort of thing.  Catchfire, we could compromise with a sort of flame retardant and yet non-toxic Asbestos for the Restofus forum where nobody of any gender or political persuasion is excluded, censored or incinerated for speaking their mind on feminist issues. Or something.  I just think it must get awfully small inside this very exclusive echo chamber is all.

Bacchus - You are probably right that the old boy's network would just appoint token "yes women" to those roles so that nothing would really change.  Many qualified women quit many fields like this because of the toxic environment.  However, losing that diversity is to the detriment of those companies.  In other countries, companies with more gender, racial and ethnic diversity on their corporate boards and such are much more successful than those who cling to the old boy's club way of running things.  We really are a backward country in many ways.

Fidel - your comment does not seem to have anything whatsoever to do with the topic.  I don't think anybody expects any one in this specific forum to be a "kiss up" - that's quite offensive to suggest that.  Certainly many males post in this forum without causing conflict, probably because they respect women and women's issues.

Wow. I think I am seeing that this is an attempt at both humour and a not-so-camoflauged attack against a babbler you insist on maintaining a vendetta with. Let me say that it fails on count one and count two does not impress. It is also so unbelievably contrary to babble's feminist mandate that I have to think you are trying to get yourself banned.

Fidel, I don't know how to say this, but the damage and headache you cause this board are beginning to outweight your benefit -- which used to be substantial. I'm at a loss, but this can't continue. Consider yourself suspended until further notice. Email me at catchfire[at]rabble.ca if you'd like to discuss.

(I'd appreciate it, in the interest of keeping this conversation on track, that any reaction to Fidel's suspension be moved to rabble reaction. Thanks in advance.)
