Well, years after Waverley West & admist whining about insufficient revenue from the Province & our massive infrastructure deficit, the City of Winnipeg's Propert & Development Committee voted unanimously in first hearing to approve the RIDGEWOOD SOUTH development.

Critics like Jim Silver rightly point out that roads don't grow on trees & that the City's neglected central neighbourhoods. Yet the City seems to be marching on.

FYI, the City's having a ZONING ALIGNMENT meeting at the Forks Atrium from 3 pm - 7 pm on May 15.

Does city council itself have no say? How about the plannng department? What formal plan for Winnipeg does this development fit into? Why is a "committee" making these decisions? What credentials do these committee members have? Why do Winnipeggers keep turning the other cheek?

If approved, the development will go to city council for final approval.

The City Committee is the first step. There's subsequent steps and the process can still be stopped. Thus far, however, there doesn't appear to be much opposition on City Council to this stupid idea. That needs to change.

What a useful observation he makes: that if the new subdivisions are not in the city - which they are not - then they are in the bedroom communities beyond. That really helps us to understand why they are not being built in the city. It completely dispels my concerns that Winnipeg city council is making decisions that are not based on any sound municipal development plan and that they continue, willy nilly, to expand the suburbs, with no consideration or even awareness of the strain this puts on civic infrastructure.

might have something to do with the fact the big developpers and city hall have been best buds for quite some time. Building another suburb right now is ridiculous. this city can't afford to keep expaning outwards, we need to encourage more building of apartments in all areas of the city. it's effecient and makes sense and costs less in infrastructure and since so many have been turned into over priced condos there's a huge demand for rental space in this city.
